●분수 읽는 법
①분수는 우리말과 반대로 읽는다.
-제일 처음 분자를 기수로,다음에 분모를 서수로 읽는다.
(분자는 기수로, 분모는 서수로 읽는다)
예를 들면 1/5(오분의 일)은 one(a) fifth라고 읽는다.
-다만 1/2(이분의 일)은 a(one)half라고 읽는다
(a second로는 읽지 않는다).
- 1 3/7(일과 칠분의 삼)과 같은 대분수는 「one and three
sevenths 」 와 같이 읽는다.
-2/3(삼분의 이)와 같이 분자가 2이상(복수)이되면,
1/3이 2개 모인 것으로 생각하여 two thirds라고 분모를 복수형으로
취급한다.(분자가 2 이상인 경우에는 분모에 s를 붙여 읽는다)
1/2➡a(one) half(a second로는 읽지 않는다).
1/3➡a(one) third
2/3➡two thirds
1/4➡a(one) quarter (a fourth or one fourth 라고도 읽는다)
3/4➡three quarters(or three fourths)
1/5➡one(a) fifth
2/5➡two fifths,
1/6➡a sixth (or one sixth)
4/7➡four sevenths
1/100➡a hundredth( or one hundredth)
2/3➡two thirds
2/7=two-sevenths
3/4➡three quarters
1 1/2 ➡one and one half
1 3/7➡one and three sevenths
2 3/4➡two and three fourths
3 1/3➡three and one third
8 1/2➡eight and a half
5 4/8➡five and four eighths
②57/756과 같이 자릿수가 크고 복잡한 분수는 분자와 분모
사이에 by나 over를 넣어 읽는다.
이 경우➡ fifty-seven over(by) seven hundred fifty-six와 같이
「분자+over(by)+분모 」로 읽는다.
73/89➡seveny-three over (by) eighty-nine
[직역:73은 89위에 있다]라는 뜻이 되겠다.
③분수를 철자(spelling)로 쓸때는 three-fifths(3/5),
two and three-thousands (2 3/1000)와 같이 분자와 분모
사이를 하이픈(-)을 연결한다.
명사적 용법일 때는 하이픈을 사용하지 않을 때도 종종 있다.
A two-thirds majority is needed to pass the project plan.
(그 기획을 통과하는 데는 2/3의 과반수가 필요하다. )
Five(-)sixths of our company are women.
(우리 회사의 5/6는 여성입니다.)
④분수 뒤에 단위 명사를 붙일 경우는 다음과 같이 읽는다.
3/4 hour➡ three quarters of an hour(3/4 시간)
3/5 mile➡ three fifths of a mile (3/5마일)
⑤분수는 셀 수 있는 수를 의미할 때는 복수로 취급되며,
셀 수 없는 양을 의미할 때는 단수로 취급된다.
Two thirds of the oranges were rotten.
(오렌지의 2/3는 썩었다.) [셀 수 있는 수]
Two thirds of the building was destroyed.
(건물의 2/3가 파손되었다.)[셀 수 없는 양]
