Having met many people in life...
살다 보면 나이가 들수록 귀티 나는 사람이 있습니다. 그것은 풍요롭게
재산을 많이 가졌다고 품격이 생기는 것은 아니며, 많이 배워 말을
잘 한다고 해서 삶의 깊이가 더해지는 것도 아니라는 것,
As you go through life, there are people who become more refined as they age.
This is because having abundant wealth does not create dignity,
nor does being well-educated and eloquent add depth to one's life.
무슨 말이냐 하면, 外華內貧 (외화내빈) 겉은 화려하되 속은 비어 있습니다.
나이가 들어 갈수록 사람의 진짜 값은 겉이 아니라 속의 밀도에서 드러납니다.
What I mean is, it is splendid on the outside but empty on the inside.
As one grows older, a person's true worth is revealed not by their outward appearance,
but by the density of their inner self.
모임 자리 어디를 가든 자식 이야기, 재산 이야기, 지난날의 무용담이 오갑니다.
그 마음, 이해 못 할 것도 없습니다. 누구나 인정받고 싶으니까요.
Wherever you go, stories of children, property, and past exploits are exchanged.
It is not hard to understand that sentiment. After all, everyone wants to be acknowledged.
하지만 이상하게도 말수 적은 사람이 더 오래 기억에 남습니다. 조용한 사람이
더 깊어 보입니다. 沉默是金 (침묵시금) 침묵은 금이다. 있다고 과장하지 않고,
없다고 위축되지 않습니다. 묻지 않으면 굳이 말하지 않고,
말하더라도 자랑이 아닌 회향(回向)처럼 건넵니다.
However, strangely enough, people of few words are remembered longer.
Quiet people appear deeper. Silence is gold. One does not exaggerate what one has,
nor is one discouraged by what one lacks. One does not speak unless asked,
and even when speaking, one offers it not as a boast, but as a dedication.
香遠益淸(향원익청) 향기는 멀리 갈수록 더욱 맑다 조용한 사람일수록
깊은 울림을 줍니다. 생각이 다를 때도 토를 달지 않고 “그럴 수도 있겠네요.”
그 한마디로 조용한 바람이 스쳐 지나갑니다.
"The farther a fragrance travels, the clearer it becomes." The quieter a person is,
the deeper the resonance they leave. Even when opinions differ,
they do not raise objections but simply say, "That could be true."
With that single word, a quiet breeze brushes past.
“요즘 애들은…” 대신 “우리도 그 나이 땐 그랬지요.” 그 말에는 이해가 있고,
그 이해에는 여유가 있습니다. 진짜 품격 귀한 사람은 앞에 나서지 않아도
"끼리끼리 동색이라고" 그 존재가 드러납니다.
Instead of saying, “Kids these days…”, say, “We were like that at that age, too.”
There is understanding in those words, and within that understanding lies a sense of ease
. A person of truly noble character reveals their presence even without stepping forward,
as the saying goes, “birds of a feather flock together.”
크게 웃지 않아도 따뜻하고, 말을 많이 말하지 않아도 단단합니다. 그런 사람
곁에 있으면 괜히 목소리를 낮추게 되고 괜히 자세를 고쳐 앉게 됩니다.
그게 바로 귀티입니다. 꾸미지 않아도 배어 나오는 향기가 그윽합니다.
They are warm even without laughing loudly,
and firm even without speaking much. Such a person.
Being by their side makes you instinctively lower your voice and adjust your posture.
That is true elegance. A fragrance emanates from them without any pretense.
