Gandhi's character and worldview
인도의 지도자 간디가 남아프리카에서 변호사로 일할 때의 일입니다.
어느 날 간디는 기차를 타고 업무를 하러 가게 되었습니다.
이제 막 떠나는 기차에 도착하여 기차 발판에 오르려는데
그만 한쪽 신발이 벗겨져 기차 밖으로 떨어졌습니다.
This happened when the Indian leader Gandhi was working as a lawyer in South Africa.
One day, Gandhi was traveling by train for work. He arrived at a train
that was just about to depart and was about to step onto the platform when,
one of his shoes came off and fell out of the train.
기차는 이미 출발하고 있었기 때문에 그 신발을 주울 수 없었습니다.
그러자 간디는 신고 있던 한 짝 신발을 떨어진 신발 옆에 던져놓았습니다.
함께 있던 친구가 몹시 의아해하면서 물었습니다.
“왜 나머지 신발을 벗어 던졌는가?”
The train had already departed, so he could not pick up the shoe.
Then, Gandhi tossed the shoe he was wearing next to the fallen one.
His friend, greatly puzzled, asked,
“Why did you take off and throw away the other shoe?”
그러자 간디는 잔잔한 미소를 지으며 대답했습니다.
“누군가 저 신발을 줍는다면 두 쪽이 다 있어야 신을 수 있지 않은가.”
Then Gandhi replied with a gentle smile,
“If someone were to pick up those shoes,
wouldn’t they need both to wear them?”
누군가에게 부족한 게 내게 있다면 기꺼이 내어줄 수 있는
따뜻한 마음이 그립습니다. 작은 것이라도 상대방을 배려하고
나누는 삶을 살아가길 바랍니다. 조그마한 배려는 더 큰
사랑을 불러오기 때문입니다.
I miss a warm heart that is willing to give what is lacking to someone else.
I hope you live a life of consideration and sharing, even with small things,
for others. Because small acts of consideration bring about greater love.
