카라바조［Michelangelo da Caravaggio, 1571~1610］
본명 Michelangelo Merisi. 이탈리아 베르가모 근교의 카라바조 출생, 초기 바로크의 대표적인 화가이다. 1584년 밀라노의 화가 시모네 페테르차노에게 사사하고 그 후 로마로 가서 처음에는 빈곤과 병고로 비참한 생활을 하였으나, 뒤에 추기경 델 몬테의 후원으로 화가로서 이름을 떨치기 시작하였다.
초기에는 정물과 초상을 치밀한 사실기법으로 묘사하여 바로크미술양식을 확립하였는데, 우피치미술관의 '바쿠스', 루브르미술관의 '여자 점쟁이', '성모의 죽음', 로마에 있는 산루이지 데이 프란체시성당의 '성마태오의 순교', 바티칸궁전에 있는 '그리스도의 죽음', '로사리오의 성모', '나자로의 부활' 등
성모와 성자를 모델로 로마에 사는 빈민의 모습을 등장시킨 그림들을 보면 빛과 그림자의 날카로운 대비를 기교적으로 구사하고, 형상을 힘차게 조소적(彫塑的)으로 묘사함으로써, 근대사실(近代寫實)의 길을 개척하였다.
금색을 바탕으로 밝은 색의 조화로써 구성된 초기 작품에서 격하게 억제된 빛으로 조명된 만년의 음울한 작품에 이르기까지, 그의 예술은 언제나 빛과 형상에 대한 근본원칙을 확립하고 있다.
이탈리아적인 조형전통을 부활시킴과 동시에 F.할스와 렘브란트, 그리고 초기의 벨라스케스에 이르기까지 많은 영향을 주었고, 17세기 유럽회화의 선구자로 평가되고 있다. 그의 화풍은 제자인 에스파냐의 리베라를 통해 살바토르 로자에게 계승되었다.
