동굴 안을 연상시키는 암흑의 어두운 공간이 있고 화면 좌측에는 바이올렛 옷을 입은 그리스도가 오른팔을 번쩍 들어 올려, "라자로야 일어나라"고 외치자. 벌써 관 속에 들어가 부패디기 시작한 라자로가 눈을 번쩍 뜨고 일어나는 순간을 그리고 있다. 당시 17세기 바로크 시대를 대표하는 명암법. 즉 명암의 강렬한 대조로 주제가 부각되도록 그리는 극적인 표현법으로 그려진 이 걸작은 렘브란트가 불과 20세일 때 그려진 것으로 이는 "빛과 암흑의 마술사"의 암흑으로 부터 비추어진 빛에 의해 신비롭게 연출되는 기적의 메시지를 더욱 성스럽게 다가오도록 해준다. 여기서 빛은 예수의 손과 그 아래에서 이 놀라운 광경을 바라보는 여동생 마리아 또는 마르타의 모습과 여인 뒤의 노인의 모습을 통해 전해지고 있다.
