Chaplin: Good day, young lady. It’s nice to meet you.
Girl: Who are you?
Chaplin: Who am I? My name is Charlie Chaplin.
I was the most famous silent movie actor in the world.
Girl: What are silent movies?
채플린: 안녕, 꼬마 아가씨. 만나서 반갑구나.
소녀: 누구시죠?
채플린: 내가 누구냐고? 내 이름은 찰리 채플린이란다.
나는 세계에서 가장 유명한 무성영화 배우였단다.
소녀: 무성영화가 뭐예요?
Chaplin: Silent movies were the first kind of movie.
In silent movies, the actors do not talk.
Girl: No talking? That sounds boring.
Chaplin: Absolutely not! Silent movies are exciting and funny.
Millions of people saw my movies. Everyone loved them.
Girl: Really?
채플린: 무성영화는 최초로 만들었던 종류의 영화란다.
무성영화에서는 배우들이 말을 하지 않지.
소녀: 말을 하지 않는다고요? 지루할 것 같아요.
채플린: 절대로 아니야! 무성영화는 흥미진진하고 재미있단다.
수백만 명이 내 영화를 봤단다. 모든 사람들이 정말 좋아했지.
소녀: 정말요?
Chaplin: Do you like to read storybooks?
Well, silent movies are like storybooks.
But they are much better because the pictures move.
That’s why they are called movies—because they have moving pictures.
Girl: Movies have moving pictures. Ha-ha!
채플린: 이야기책을 읽는 걸 좋아하니? 물론 당연히 좋아하겠지.
음, 무성영화는 이야기책과 같은 거야.
하지만 무성영화는 그림들이 움직여서 훨씬 좋지.
그래서 사람들이 '무비(movie)'라고 부르는 거야.
왜냐하면 '움직이는(moving)' 그림들이니까.
소녀: 영화는 움직이는 그림이군요. 하-하!
Girl: Why did you stop making silent movies?
Chaplin: These days, people don’t want to see silent movies; everyone wants talkies.
Girl: Talkies?
Chaplin: That’s the word people first used for talking movies.
Movies where the actors talked were called talkies.
소녀: 왜 무성영화 만드는 일을 그만두셨어요?
채플린: 요즘에 사람들은 무성영화를 별로 보고 싶어하지 않아.
모두가 유성영화를 원한단다.
소녀: 유성영화요?
채플린: 그건 말을 하는 영화에 처음 사용된 말이지.
배우들이 영화 속에서 말을 하는 영화를 처음에 유성영화라고 불렀단다.
Girl: Did you come from Hollywood?
Chaplin: No, I was born far away from Hollywood.
I came from England. I was born on April 16, 1889, in London.
Like me, my father and mother were both entertainers.
소녀: 아저씨는 할리우드 출신이신가요?
채플린: 아니, 나는 할리우드에서 먼 곳에서 태어났어.
나는 영국 출신이지.
나는 1889년 4월 16일, 런던에서 태어났단다.
나처럼 우리 부모님도 연예인이셨단다.
Girl: Were they rich and famous?
Chaplin: No, we were very poor.
But my parents gave me something better than money.
They gave me the talent to entertain people.
소녀: 그분들도 부자이고 유명하셨나요?
채플린: 아니, 우리는 아주 가난했지.
하지만 우리 부모님은 나에게 돈보다 더 좋은 것을 주셨단다.
나에게 다른 사람들을 즐겁게 해 줄 수 있는 재주를 주셨으니까.
Chaplin: When I was very young, they taught me how to sing and dance.
When I was five years old, I sang and danced in front of many people.
Girl: Did they like you?
Chaplin: Of course, they did. They loved me and they threw money at me.
채플린: 내가 아주 어렸을 때, 부모님은 노래하고 춤추는 것을 가르쳐 주셨단다.
그래서 5살이 되었을 때, 나는 많은 사람들 앞에서 노래하고 춤을 췄지.
소녀: 사람들이 아저씨를 좋아했나요?
채플린: 물론, 그들은 좋아했지.
그들은 나를 아주 좋아했고 나에게 돈도 던져 주었단다.
Girl: That must have been exciting.
Chaplin: It was. My mother said I would be the most famous person in the world.
But then, sadly, my father died when I was twelve years old.
When he died, my mother became very sick as well.
소녀: 정말 신났겠어요.
채플린: 그랬었지. 어머니는 내가 세계에서 가장 유명한 사람이 될 거라고 말씀하셨어.
하지만, 슬프게도, 내가 12살 때 아버지가 돌아가셨어.
아버지가 돌아가셨을 때, 어머니도 많이 아프게 되셨지.
Chaplin: After that, my brother and I had to go to the workhouse.
Girl: What is a workhouse?
Chaplin: It was a terrible place where poor children had to go when their families had no money.
The children had to work very hard from morning until night.
채플린: 그 이후로 우리 형제는 구빈원에 가야 했단다.
소녀: 구빈원이 뭔가요?
채플린: 구빈원은 집에 돈이 없는 가난한 집 아이들이 가야 했던 아주 끔찍한 곳이지.
아이들은 아침부터 저녁까지 아주 열심히 일을 해야 했단다.
Girl: How did you become a famous movie star?
Chaplin: First, I became a stage actor.
Then, I joined the Casey Circus as a mime.
Girl: Mime? What’s that?
소녀: 어떻게 유명한 영화배우가 되셨나요?
채플린: 처음엔 무대 배우가 되었지.
그러고는 '케이시 서커스'에 마임으로 입단했단다.
소녀: 마임이요? 그게 뭐예요?
Chaplin: A mime is an actor who uses only his body and his face.
Watch! I’ll show you!
Girl: Ha-ha! You’re funny.
Chaplin: That’s what everyone said.
They said I was a very funny mime.
So I decided to become a silent comedian.
I made everyone laugh.
채플린: 마임이란 몸과 얼굴 만을 사용하는 배우란다.
잘 봐! 네게 보여주마!
소녀: 하-하! 재미있어요.
채플린: 모든 사람들이 그렇게 말했지.
사람들은 나를 보고 아주 웃기는 마임이라고 했단다.
그래서 나는 무성 코미디언이 되기로 결심했지.
나는 모든 사람들을 웃게 했어.
Chaplin: Soon, I went to the United States and started making movies.
In 1914, I acted in my first full-length silent movie.
It was called Making a Living.
Then I created my most famous character, the Tramp.
With my funny little suit, mustache, and cane, I made the whole world laugh.
채플린: 곧, 나는 미국으로 건너가서 영화를 만들기 시작했단다.
1914년에 나는 나의 첫 번째 장편 무성영화에서 연기를 했지.
그 영화의 제목은 <생계를 꾸리다>였지.

Girl: I guess everyone loved you.
Chaplin: No, not everyone liked me.
In the United States, some policemen thought that I was a troublemaker.
Some of my movies made them angry, so I had to go back to England.
소녀: 모든 사람들이 아저씨를 좋아했겠어요.
채플린: 아니, 모든 사람들이 나를 좋아하지는 않았단다.
미국에서는 일부 경찰들이 나를 말썽꾸러기로 생각했지.
어떤 영화들은 그들을 화나게 했기 때문에 나는 영국으로 돌아가야만 했지.
Girl: Did you ever go back to America?
Chaplin: Yes, I went one more time. In 1972,
I was given a great honor at the Academy Awards.
That was one of the happiest moments of my life.
소녀: 다시 미국으로 돌아간 적이 있었나요?
채플린: 응, 나는 미국에 한 번 더 가게 되었단다.
1972년에 나는 아카데미 시상식에서 크나큰 명예를 얻었지.
