인물 & 역사 1, 자라나는 신발 (켄톤 리 이야기)
It's called The Shoe That Grows. What does it do?
Well, it grows! This lets kids have shoes they can wear for a long time!
In 2007 Kenton Lee was working at an orphanage in Kenya.
이것은 '자라나는 신발'이라고 불린다. 그것이 무엇을 하는가?
음, 자란다! 이것은 아이들이 오랫동안 신을 수 있는 신발을 갖도록 해준다!
2007년 켄톤 리는 케냐에 있는 고아원에서 일하고 있었다.
One day he was walking with a group of kids.
He looked down at a little girl.
She had on a white dress and shoes that didn't fit.
The front parts of the shoes were cut open, and the girl's toes were sticking out.
어느 날 그는 한 무리의 아이들과 함께 걷고 있었다.
그는 한 작은 소녀를 내려다보았다.
소녀는 하얀 원피스를 입고 맞지 않는 신발을 신고 있었다.
신발 앞부분은 찢어져 벌어져 있었고 소녀의 발가락이 튀어나와 있었다.
Kenton looked around.
Many other kids' shoes were much too small for their feet.
Kenton asked the orphanage director why so many kids had shoes that didn't fit.
켄톤은 둘러보았다. 다른 많은 아이들의 신발도 너무 작아 아이들의 발에 맞지 않았다.
켄톤은 고아원 원장에게 왜 이렇게 많은 아이들이 맞지 않는 신발을 신고 있는지 물었다.
The director explained that the children outgrew their shoes quickly.
And there simply weren't enough donated shoes for everyone.
Kenton couldn't stop thinking about the children's shoes.
원장은 아이들이 빨리 커서 신발이 맞지 않게 된다고 설명했다.
그리고 기부된 신발들이 정말로 모자라 모두에게 나눠줄 수 없었다.
켄톤은 그 아이들의 신발에 대한 생각을 멈출 수가 없었다.
Wearing small shoes was unhealthy for the children since their feet were still growing.
But going barefoot was dangerous too.
The children could get diseases from walking barefoot.
Their feet could even become infected.
There had to be a solution to this problem.
아이들의 발은 계속 자라기 때문에 작은 신발을 신는 것은 아이들 건강에 좋지 않았다.
하지만 맨발로 다니는 것도 위험했다. 맨발로 걸으면 질병에 걸릴 수 있었다.
심지어 발이 감염될 수도 있었다. 이 문제에 대한 해결책이 있어야 했다.
Finally Kenton had an idea. He could create special shoes.
His shoes would grow along with a child.
The shoes couldn't be expensive, and they needed to last for a long time.
Now Kenton just needed to find a way to make these shoes.
마침내 켄톤에게 좋은 생각이 떠올랐다. 켄톤은 특별한 신발을 만들 수 있었다.
켄톤의 신발은 아이와 함께 자라날 것이다. 이 신발들은 비싸면 안 되고 오래 가야 했다.
이제 켄톤은 이 신발을 만들 방법을 찾아내기만 하면 되었다.
He contacted several shoe companies, but none showed interest in his idea.
Kenton decided to make the shoes himself.
He even made himself a promise to show his commitment.
He wouldn't buy himself a new pair of shoes until his project was finished.
켄톤은 몇몇 신발 회사에 연락했지만, 아무도 그의 아이디어에 관심을 보이지 않았다.
켄톤은 직접 신발을 만들기로 결심했다.
그는 자신의 헌신을 보여주기 위해 스스로 하나의 약속을 하기도 했다.
자신의 프로젝트가 완성될 때까지 신발을 한 켤레도 사지 않겠다는 것이었다.
Five years later Kenton's shoes had holes and were worn out.
But he had created a great new shoe—The Shoe That Grows!
The shoes look like normal sandals.
They're designed to last for five years, so all of their materials are durable.
5년 뒤 켄톤의 신발은 구멍 나고 낡았다.
하지만 그는 훌륭한 새 신발을 만들어냈다.
바로 자라나는 신발이었다!
그 신발들은 보통 샌들처럼 생겼다.
5년 동안 지속되도록 디자인이 되었기에 신발의 모든 소재는 튼튼하다.
The straps can be adjusted with snaps, buckles, and Velcro.
This lets the shoes grow along with the wearer.
The shoes come in three sizes.
Each can fit five different shoe sizes.
신발의 끈은 스냅과 버클, 그리고 벨크로로 조절할 수 있다.
이로 인해 신발은 신발 주인과 함께 자라날 수 있게 된다.
이 신발은 세 가지 크기로 나온다.
각각은 다섯 가지 다른 신발 치수에 맞을 수 있다.
Kenton designed the shoes to be small and light too.
He wanted to send lots of shoes at once to poor places around the world.
In fact, fifty pairs of these shoes can fit into a normal-sized duffel bag.
켄톤은 또 이 신발을 작고 가볍게 디자인했다.
그는 전 세계 가난한 곳으로 많은 신발을 한 번에 보내고 싶었다.
실제로 보통 크기의 더플 백에 이런 신발들 50켤레가 들어간다.
Kenton's organization is called Because International.
It relies on volunteers to deliver the shoes.
Because International has also sent shoes to adults.
Some of the shoes are even made in poor countries.
So the shoes have created jobs for people too.
켄톤의 단체는 비코즈 인터내셔널이라고 불린다.
이 단체는 자원봉사자들에 의지해서 신발을 배달한다.
비코즈 인터내셔널은 어른들에게도 신발을 보내고 있다.
일부의 신발은 가난한 나라에서 만들어지기도 한다.
그러니까 이 신발이 사람들에게 일자리를 만들어주기도 한 것이다.
With The Shoe That Grows, Kenton found a simple way to solve a serious problem.
His shoe design has improved the lives of poor children around the world.
자라나는 신발로 켄톤은 심각한 문제를 해결할 간단한 방법을 찾아냈다.
그의 신발 디자인은 전 세계 가난한 아이들의 삶을 개선시켜 주었다.
