인물 & 역사 1, 마더 테레사: 사랑으로 사람을 변화시키다
 
Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in what is now the small country of Macedonia. 
When she was young, she was always happy to help out at church.
 
테레사 수녀는 지금은 마케도니아가 된 작은 나라에서 1910년에 태어났습니다.
테레사 수녀가 어렸을 때 그녀는 항상 교회에서 도와주기를 좋아했습니다.
 
She liked to borrow books from the priest.
 "May I read some of your books about missionaries?" she asked the priest one day.
     "Of course you may! Here they are," he said.
     She read the books over and over, and she was touched by the stories about caring for others. 
Her favorite book was about the missionaries who worked in India.
 
그녀는 신부님께 책을 빌리는 것을 좋아했습니다.
"제가 선교사들에 관한 신부님의 책을 좀 읽어도 될까요?" 어느 날 그녀가 신부님께 물었습니다.
     "물론 읽어봐도 되지! 여기 있다." 신부님이 말했습니다.
     그녀는 반복하고 반복해서 그 책들을 읽었고,
다른 사람들을 돌보는 것에 관한 이야기에 감동을 받았습니다.
그녀가 가장 좋아한 책은 인도에서 일한 선교사들에 관한 것이었습니다.
 
It made her think about caring for poor people in India herself.
     When Mother Teresa was 12, 
she asked God if she should go to India to help people as a missionary. 
She prayed about this for six years. 
When she was 18, she asked a priest about her prayers.
     "I have talked to my mother and my sisters about this. 
I have prayed a lot too.
 
이 책으로 인해 그녀는 자신이 인도의 가난한 사람들을 돌보는 것에 대해 생각하게 했습니다.
     테레사 수녀가 12살이었을 때, 그녀는 선교사로서 사람들을 도우러 인도로 가야 할지 하나님께 물어보았습니다.
그녀는 이것을 위해 6년 동안 기도했습니다.
18살이 되었을 때 자신의 기도에 대해서 한 신부님께 물었습니다.
     "전, 이 일에 대해 어머니와 언니와 이야기했어요.
저는 기도도 많이 했어요.
 
But how can I be sure that God wants me to go to India?"
     "You will know through your joy, my child," was his advice.
 "I would be very happy if God let me serve him and other people," 
she said. Mother Teresa knew that her heart was leading her.
     Soon after, she went to Dublin to learn English and to be trained as a nun.
 
하지만 하나님이 제가 인도로 가길 원하신다는 걸 어떻게 확신할 수 있을까요?"
     "너의 기쁨을 통해 알 수 있단다." 이것이 신부님의 충고였습니다.
"만약 하나님이 제가 하나님과 다른 사람들을 위해 봉사하도록 허락하신다면 전 정말 기쁠 거예요."
그녀가 말했습니다. 테레사 수녀는 마음이 그녀를 이끌고 있다는 것을 알았습니다.
      얼마 안 있어 그녀는 영어를 배우고 수녀로서 훈련받기 위해 더블린으로 갔습니다.
 
Then Mother Teresa was sent to India. 
There she learned to speak Hindi and Bengali. 
She was saddened by the way most people lived in India. 
Most people were very poor. 
"Oh! Look at what little they have to eat! 
How can I help them?" she wondered.
 "So many people here are poor."
 
그런 다음 테레사 수녀는 인도로 파송되었습니다.
거기서 그녀는 힌디어와 벵골어를 배웠습니다.
그녀는 대부분의 인도 사람들이 사는 모습에 마음이 아팠습니다.
사람들은 거의 다 매우 가난했습니다.
"오! 먹을 것이 거의 없는 저들을 보세요!
제가 그들을 어떻게 도울 수 있을까요?"
그녀는 생각했습니다. "이곳에는 너무나 많은 사람들이 가난하답니다."
 
     While she worked very hard to help the poor, 
she also taught children at a high school. 
After a few years, she became the school principal, 
but the suffering of the poor was never far from her mind.
 "God, I know that being a school principal is an important job because I can help poor children to learn.
 
     그녀는 가난한 사람들을 돕기 위해 매우 열심히 일하면서 고등학교에서 아이들을 가르쳤습니다.
몇 년이 지난 후에 그녀는 고등학교 교장 선생님이 되었습니다.
하지만 가난한 사람들의 고통이 그녀의 마음에서 떠나지 않았습니다.
"하나님, 제가 학교 교장이 되는 것이 중요하다는 것은 알고 있습니다.
왜냐하면 가난한 아이들이 배우는 것을 도와줄 수 있으니까요.
 
But who takes care of the poor people who live on the streets? 
How can I help them too?" she prayed.
     On September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa felt that God had given her an answer. 
She was sure that he wanted her to serve him by helping the poorest of the poor. 
She thanked him for answering her prayer.
 
그러나 거리에서 사는 가난한 사람들은 누가 돌보지요?
제가 어떻게 그들도 도울 수 있을까요?" 그녀는 기도했습니다.
     1946년 9월 10일, 테레사 수녀는 하나님이 그녀에게 답을 주었다고 느꼈습니다.
그녀는 하나님이 가난한 사람들 중에서도 가장 가난한 사람들을 돌보며
하나님께 봉사하길 원한다는 확신을 했습니다.
그녀는 하나님이 그녀의 기도를 들어주신 것에 대해 감사했습니다.
 
"I know what I must do now. 
I must live with the poorest people, but how can I help them best?"
     She decided to become a nurse. 
One day, as she was walking on a street in the slums of Calcutta, she saw a woman lying in the dirt.
     "Oh! She might be hurt!" Mother Teresa thought. "Are you okay?" she asked.
 
"이제 제가 뭘 해야 하는지 알았어요.
전 가난한 사람들 중에서도 가장 가난한 사람들과 같이 살아야 합니다.
하지만 어떻게 제가 그들을 가장 잘 도와줄 수 있을까요?"
     그녀는 간호원이 되기로 결심했습니다.
어느 날 그녀는 캘커타의 빈민가의 거리를 걸어가다가, 한 여인이 거리에 누워있는 것을 보았습니다.
     "오! 그녀는 다친 건지도 몰라!" 테레사 수녀는 생각했습니다. "괜찮으세요?" 그녀가 물었습니다.
 
     "Oh . . . ," the woman groaned.
     Mother Teresa was shocked at the woman’s condition.
 "Oh, how terrible! Look at all the rats and ants around this woman! 
Please, help me! 
I need to take this woman to a hospital quickly," she called out. But no one wanted to help her.
     "Oh no! She smells too bad," said one passerby.
 
     "음……." 여자는 신음을 했습니다.
     테레사 수녀는 그 여자의 상태에 충격을 받았습니다.
"아, 정말 끔찍하군! 이 여자 주위에 있는 쥐와 개미들을 봐!
제발 저를 도와주세요. 빨리 이 여자를 병원으로 데려가야 해요."
테레사 수녀가 소리쳤지만 아무도 그녀를 도와주고 싶어하지 않았습니다.
     "오 세상에! 그 여자에게서 지독한 냄새가 나는군." 지나가는 행인이 말했습니다.
 
     "Just leave her there. She will die soon anyway," said another.
     But Mother Teresa did not give up. 
"Do not be afraid. I will take you to the hospital," she told the woman. 
She carefully picked her up and helped her to the hospital. 
But even at the hospital, people were not willing to help.
 
     "그녀를 그냥 거기 둬요. 어쨌든 그녀는 곧 죽을 테니까." 다른 사람이 말했습니다.
     하지만 테레사 수녀는 포기하지 않았어요. "두려워하지 말아요. 제가 당신을 병원으로 데려가겠어요."
테레사 수녀가 그 여자에게 말했습니다.
테레사 수녀는 조심스럽게 그 여인을 일으켜 세워 병원으로 데려갔습니다.
그러나 심지어 병원에서도 사람들은 도우려고 하지 않았습니다.
 
     "Oh, take her away! She smells very bad! 
She is so dirty that she might not be good for the other patients here!" they said.
     "Oh please! You must help her! 
I will not leave until you help her!" Mother Teresa insisted.
     Finally a doctor and a nurse agreed to care for the woman. 
They did their best, but they could not make the woman well.
 
     "오! 그녀를 데려가세요! 그녀는 냄새가 너무 나요!
그녀는 너무 더러워서 여기 있는 다른 환자들에게 안 좋을 거예요!" 그들이 말했습니다.
     "오 제발! 당신들이 그녀를 돌봐 주어야만 해요!
당신들이 그녀를 도와주기 전까지 난 떠나지 않겠어요!" 테레사 수녀는 고집했습니다.
     마침내 의사와 간호사가 그 여자를 돌보기로 동의했습니다.
그들이 최선을 다했지만 그 여자를 살리지는 못했습니다.
 
This made Mother Teresa very sad, but she did not stop helping other poor people. 
Many people in India thought Mother Teresa was wasting her time. 
"Ha! Look at that European!" they said. "What does she think she can do? 
There are too many poor people to help. She’s foolish if she thinks she can make a difference."
 
이 일로 테레사 수녀는 매우 슬펐지만, 다른 불쌍한 사람들을 돕는 것을 멈추지 않았습니다.
인도에 있는 많은 사람들은 테레사 수녀가 시간을 낭비하고 있다고 생각했습니다.
"하! 저 유럽인을 봐!" 그들이 말했습니다.
"자기가 뭘 할 수 있다고 생각하는 거지?
도와야 할 가난한 사람들이 너무 많아.
저 수녀가 자기가 뭔가 변화를 줄 수 있다고 생각한다면 그녀가 어리석은 거야."
 
     Mother Teresa, however, never gave up. 
Because of her tireless work, the people in the slums began to realize how much she cared for them. 
She taught them how to read and write and looked after them when they were sick. 
The poorest of the poor respected her, and over time others admired her too.
 
     하지만 테레사 수녀는 포기하지 않았습니다.
테레사 수녀가 지칠줄 모르고 일했기 때문에 빈민가 사람들은
그녀가 그들을 얼마나 소중히 여기는지 깨닫기 시작했습니다.
그녀는 그들에게 읽기와 쓰기를 가르쳤고, 아플 때 돌보아 주었습니다.
가난한 사람들 중에서도 가난한 이들이 그녀를 존경했습니다.
그리고 시간이 흐르자 다른 사람들도 그녀를 존경했습니다.
 
     In 1950 the pope gave her permission to start her own Catholic organization called the Missionaries of Charity. 
Many joined the Missionaries of Charity, becoming nuns and priests, 
to help Mother Teresa look after the poor in India and elsewhere in the world.
 
     1950년 교황은 테레사 수녀가 '사랑의 선교회'라는 가톨릭 단체를 시작하도록 허락했습니다.
많은 사람들이 수녀와 신부가 되어서 그 단체에 가입했습니다.
그래서 테레사 수녀가 인도와 세계 모든 곳에 있는 가난한 사람들을 돌보는 것을 도왔습니다.
 
     In 1979 the world recognized Mother Teresa’s tireless love. 
She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 
When Mother Teresa was told she had won the prize, she simply said, "I am not worthy."
     Mother Teresa kept working until her death in 1997 at the age of 87.
 
     1979년, 전 세계가 그녀의 지칠줄 모르는 사랑을 인정해주었습니다.
그녀는 노벨 평화상을 받게 되었습니다.
테레사 수녀는 그 상을 받게 되었다는 소식을 들었을 때 이렇게 말했습니다.
"전 자격이 없습니다."
     테레사 수녀는 1997년 그녀의 나이 87세로 죽기 전까지 일을 계속했습니다.
 
She was a warmhearted, caring, and deeply spiritual person. 
Her love for the poor has inspired many to follow in her footsteps. 
Since it was founded, the Missionaries of Charity has grown, 
and it now helps the poorest of the poor in almost every country in the world.
 
그녀는 마음이 따뜻하고, 다른 사람을 보살피는, 무척 영적인 사람이었습니다.
가난한 사람을 위한 그녀의 사랑은 많은 사람들이 그녀의 발자취를 따르도록 영감을 주었습니다.
사랑의 선교회는 설립된 이후 발전하여,
이제는 세계 거의 모든 나라에서 가난한 사람들 중에서도 가장 가난한 사람들을 돕고 있습니다.
