Fallen Leaves
by D.J. YOON
Grandpa,
Seeing the fallen leaves
Piled up piled up
In the old days,
We swept them up
Lighting the stove
Cooking rice and cow porridge
In the old days,
We swept them up
Using them as compost
Leaving them rot and rot
Now,
They are
Just thrown away!
Grandpa,
Seeing the fallen leaves
Piled up piled up
Clicking his tongue saying it's a shame
Clicking his tongue saying it's a pity
Tsktsk Tsktsk

Appreciation Review 感想
Fallen Leaves by D.J. Yoon is a poignant and beautifully simple poem that captures a child's-eye view of generational wisdom and changing times.
Through the gentle voice of a grandfather, the poem reflects on how something as ordinary as fallen leaves once held purpose and meaning — used for warmth, food, and nurturing the earth.
The repetition and rhythmic "tsktsk" at the end echo the grandfather’s quiet sorrow, making the message both memorable and touching for young readers.
With its vivid imagery and subtle environmental message, this poem invites children to see everyday things with curiosity, respect, and a sense of history.
