SCARECROW II

by D.J. YOON

Last fall I went to visit
The town where Dad once played
I walked along the rice fields
And saw a man of hay

Scarecrow scarecrow
Your head is full of air
You never think of anything
You only stand and stare

But then the scarecrow frowned
And shouted back at me
You’re a scarecrow too you know
As scarecrow as can be

You go to school all day
And then more school at night
You never run or laugh or play
That really isn't right

Your head is full of numbers
And grown-up thoughts and rules
But you forgot how fun it is
To play with friends at school

YOU ARE A SCARECROW

YOU ARE A SCARECROW

INDEED

YOU ARE A SCARECROW

scarecrow

Appreciation Review 感想

Scarecrow II is a delightful and thought-provoking poem for children that blends humor, rhythm, and a meaningful message.

With simple language and vivid imagery, the poem tells the story of a child who teases a scarecrow only to be cleverly reminded that he, too, has become stiff and lifeless in his own way.

The scarecrow’s surprising response encourages young readers to reflect on the importance of balance between learning and play.

Through its playful tone and catchy repetition, the poem delivers a gentle but powerful reminder that childhood should be filled with joy, imagination, and friendship.

It's a poem that both children and adults can enjoy and learn from.
