When spring has come every year
Leaves are just nowhere
To be sprouting from trees
It’s because
Last year's leaves to be used
As a foundation for trees.
When spring has come every year
Flowers are just nowhere
To be blooming from flowers
It’s because
Last year’s flowers to be ripened
As a seed for new flowers.
II
Cold, cold winter
Having endured it well
As it is so amazing
Dandelions sprouting on the rice & field banks
Let them bloom as much as they want
HE that person
Tough, tough winter
Having borne it up greatly
As it is so pretty
Birds sitting on the branch with its sap rising
Let them sing as much as they want
HE that person.
III
When sowing lettuce seeds with Dad
I was wondering how on earth
These little seeds are so powerful
Enough to push the soil and sprout
So concerned about the seeds
Calling on the seeds every day
I could see one day
Lettuce sprouts with all its force
Softly pushing out of the soil
Calling on the seeds every day
I could see the heavens
Holding the lettuce sprouts’ hands
Slowly pulling them out of the soil

해마다 봄이 되면
나무는 그냥
잎이 피는 게 아니다
나무는 지난해의 잎들이
밑거름이 되었기 때문.
해마다 봄이 되면
꽃은 그냥
꽃이 피는 게 아니다
꽃은 지난해의 꽃이
씨앗으로 여물었기 때문.
II
춥고 추운 겨울
잘 참고 견뎠으니
기특하다고
논둑 밭둑 민들레를
맘껏맘껏 피어나게 하지요
그 분이
질기고 질긴 겨울
꾹 참고 견뎠으니
어여쁘다고
물오른 나뭇가지 새들을 앉히고는
맘껏맘껏 노래 부르게 하지요

아버지와 같이 상추씨를 뿌릴 때
이렇게 작은 것들이
도대체 무슨 힘으로
흙을 밀고 새싹을 틔울까
매우 걱정스러웠다
그 뒤 날마다 가서 보니
어느 날인가
상추 새싹이 온 힘을 다해 흙을 밀고 나오려고 하니
하늘이 상추 새싹의 손을 잡고
가만가만 당겨 주고 있었다
