More Than Flowers

So elegant by the creek
Pansies in bloom
Overshadowing the water.
Rice fish flock together
Minnow move in groups
Touching or teasing
tuk
tuk
the violet reflection.
Violets’ shadow
Growing taller and taller
Towards the evening dusk.
II
Buckwheat flowers in the field
Just look like snowflakes
Flakes flakes snowflakes
The sun shines bright to melt them down
Still they stay upon the ground
At night, the breeze will softly blow
But she cannot sweep away the snow
Buckwheat flowers, soft and white
Like snowflakes, pure and light
And yet premature snowflakes
III
You may call it acacia flowers
Not for my family, though.
A hundred beehives,
This is all about my family property
We need to gather honey from acacia flowers
To survive well for another tough year.
You may recall the song singing
White acacia flowers blowing in the wind
This is not the song for my family, though.
Acacia flowers should not be blown away by the wind.
Not under any circumstances.
You may call it acacia flowers
Not for my family, though
As acacia flowers is a rice field for us.

송사리 피라미 떼를 지어
몰려다니다
제비꽃 그림자를
툭

건드리며 놀리고 있다.

조금씩 키가 커가는
저녁 해거름.

메밀밭에 핀
메밀꽃은
송이송이
눈꽃 송이
낮에는 햇빛이
말끔히 녹여 보려
애쓰지만
녹지 않고
밤에는 바람이
살살살 날려 보려
애쓰지만
날리지 않고
메밀밭에 핀
메밀꽃은
철 이른
눈꽃 송이

우리 식구들에게는
아카시아 꽃은
꽃이 아닙니다.
벌통 백 개가 전 재산인 우리 식구들
아카시아 꿀을 많이 따야
한 해 잘 보낼 수 있습니다.
우리들이 즐겨 부르는 노래에
아카시아 흰 꽃이 바람에 날리는
하는 것이 있지만
우리 식구들에게는
아카시아 흰 꽃이 바람에 날려선 안됩니다.
절대로 안 됩니다.
우리 식구들에게는
아카시아 꽃은
논밭입니다.
