Greeting Korean Poetry Lovers,
Let's make plans to have a regularly scheduled Korean poetry event in New York. Sunday's successful event with Cross Cultural Communications and City Lore at Flushing Town Hall proved that there is a lot of interest in this subject. If this was the first major Korean poetry event in New York, then interest can only grow larger from here, if each of us tells a friend and each person in Sunday's audience of nearly 100 attendees tells a friend. The Korean Art Society would certainly be happy to promote such an event to our 4,000 members. We are incredibly fortunate to have so many great resources here in New York, like Kwang-ryul Cho, the son of Korean icon Cho Ji-hoon, the incomparable Stanley Barkan and his outstanding team of translators, and talented poets and scholars like Sang-Hee Kwak, Christina Shin, and Hong Ai Bai. It would be a shame to not regularly bring all of these great resources together with the mission of promoting Korean poetry, both modern and traditional verse (I was happy to see 16th Century kasa read and appreciated alongside modern poetry at Sunday's event). I propose that we all attend the April 12th Korean poetry event at noon at Poets House and meet afterward for lunch to discuss plans for a semi-annual event that could become a quarterly event. I hope we can include music, as we did on Sunday, since music and poetry are intertwined in Korea, not only in pansori, but also in sijo and kasa poems, which are commonly sung. Please reply to this email if you would like to meet with us for lunch after the Poets House event on April 12th. I look forward to reading your replies and your thoughts. Sunday's wonderful event should make us all very happy and proud. It should inspire us, and motivate us to make plans to share the beauty of Korean poetry and song with the rest of the world.
Sincerely,
Robert Turley
Korean Art Society President
