This
is an awesome 'Symphony of a Thousand', very well played and sung by
the all involved. Clocking in just less than 80 min. Markus Stenz whips
up his orchestra and singers stressing drive and energy, but he also
knows exactly where to slow down in the massive score. For example, in
Part I. he takes time building a huge climax leading to recapitulation
passage. Likewise, the ending of Part II. is
unusually slow - all to great effects - adding enormously to the
grandiosity of the symphony. That's where most conductors rush against
the flow of the music.
Presumably, this live concert will be a
basis on which a future recording will be produced and released. So far,
Oehms label has released Stenz's M2, M3, M4, and M5 in SACD format.
Stenz is indeed emerging as one of major Mahler conductors of our time.
