3. 화승총 실제사격
Firing the matchlock musket
25야드(22.5m) 거리를 두고 박스판지로 표적을 세웠는데, 가로 2.5피트(75cm) 세로 4피트(120cm)의
넉넉한 크기. 표적 한가운데에 " X " 표시를 했다. 화승총 지짓대를 땅에 박고 화승줄에 불을 붙여 지짓대에 걸었다.
흑색화약과 기타 물품은 몇 야드 떨어진 테이블에 놓아뒀다.
We set up 25 yards from our cardboard target, a generous-sized piece of cardboard about 4 feet by two-and-a-half feet, and marked the aiming point with an “X”. The musket rest was staked into the ground, and the slow match was lit and hung over the rest. A table with the powder and other supplies was set up a few yards away.

인터넷 서치로 화승총시대의 사격교본 그림을 찾아냈고, 나는 되도록이면 그 자세와 동일한 포즈를
취하면서, 실탄장전 과정의 기본자세를 재현해 보았다.
I searched the Internet for contemporaneous illustrations of musketeers and Manuals of Arms of the time, and used those as a basis for the loading procedure.
옛날 화승총 발사과정을 그대로 재연하고 싶었으나, 몇가지 부분은 안전상의 문제로 제외했다.
첫번째는 소위 "12제자"(twelve apostles)란 은어로 불렸던 흑색화약을 담은 나무통 탄띠와 엉덩이 부분에
휴대한 점화화약통은 제외. 둘째, 옛 교범에는 실탄장전 전에 화약접시의 화약을 먼저 담는 것이 표준이었지만
그렇게 하지 않았다; 사격을 재현한 사람은 안전성 담보를 위해 근대 화승총사격 방식에 따라 실탄장전 후에
화약접시 화약을 담았다.
(고증신뢰도를 높이기 위해 원래방식을 따라하려 노력했지만, 막상 전장터에서 총을 들고 불쑥 나타난 상대방을
제압하기위해서는 실탄과 흑색화약을 장전하고, 화승불꽃이 꺼지지 않게 후후 불어대는 등 모든 과정을 사격수
혼자서 수행해야 한다. 사진에서는 이 과정 모두 혼자 처리하는 것처럼 보이지만 실제로는 그렇지 않았다.

제품으로 70-75그레인(grains; 입자굵기 단위로, 수치가 높을수록 미세한 분말형태가 된다)규격을 사용했다.
Although I used ancient firing procedures as a guide, I made several exceptions for safety. First, the “twelve apostles” powder bandoliers and hip priming flask were omitted. Secondly, standard loading tactics of the period called for the pan to be primed before the musket was loaded; however, for safety reasons reenactors prime AFTER the musket is loaded for modern shooting.
(While we strive for authenticity, we generally try to stop short of the ancient tradition of accidently setting oneself and one’s powder alight on the battlefield, and blowing oneself up in a ball of flame. A neat trick, but one can only do it once.)
The charge is poured down the barrel. I used 70-75 grains of Goex FF.

실탄을 장전했다. 총신구경 75 캐리버(19mm)에 장전한 납탄환 지름은 0.735(18.7mm) 정도이며, 무게는
1온스(28.35g)가 조금 넘는다. 총구 주둥이에 탄환을 넣고 꼬질대로 총신 밑부분까지 쑤셔넣는다.
여러번의 실험과 실수를 바탕으로 산출한 결과, 지름 0.375인치 탄환이 캐리버75 구경의 흑색화약
활강 화승총에 가장 이상적이라는 것을 알게됐다.
첫번째 사격에서 탄환발사를 성공했다 손치더라도, 재장전 사격시 같은 크기의 탄환을 삽입하기는 쉽지않다.
그 이유는 흑색화약이 에너지 활용면에서 매우 비효율적이어서, 폭발화력의 절반은 찌꺼기가 돼 총신내부에
들러붙기 때문이다. 그 때문에 사격후 제때 총신을 깨끗이 닦아내지 않으면, 첫번째 발사한 크기의 탄환을 다시
장전하기가 어렵거나 불가능할 수도 있다. 그리고, 내가 생각컨데 0.735인치 탄환이 대형 활강화승총 실탄으로는
적당하고 또 합당한 크기라 여겨진다.
The ball is loaded - for a 75 caliber I use a .735 sprued lead ball, which weighs a bit more than an ounce. I have the sprue pointed toward the rear. Based on trial and error, I have found the .735 to be the ideal size for a .75 caliber smoothbore blackpower musket.
While it is possible to use a larger ball for the first shot, you need to keep in mind that black powder is a very inefficient source of energy, and about ½ the volume of the charge is left in the barrel as residue. That makes reloading a larger ball difficult or impossible unless the barrel is cleaned between shots. And .735 seems to provide reasonable accuracy for what one might expect from a large smoothbore.

탄환은 꼬질대(ram rod)로 총신 끝부분까지 소위 "꼬챙이 휘두르기"(scouring stick)
동작으로 밀어넣는다. 이런 사격준비를 마친 총기를 "장전된 총"(loaded gun)이라 부른다.
이제는 총구를 아래로 향하게 하거나 흔들어도 화약이 쏟아지지 않는다. 나는 점화접시에
담을 화약은 특별제조품으로 쓰는데, 4그레인 규격의 고억스 FFFF(Goex FFFF )다.
The ball then is pushed to the bottom of the barrel with the ram rod, or “scouring stick.”
This now classifies the firearm for range purposes as a “loaded gun.”
Now the musket is pointed downrange and can then be primed. I use a special priming flask which provides a measured charge of about 4 grains. I use Goex FFFF as the primer.

부싯돌 총 또는 그와 유사한 총기를 사격하는 대부분의 사수는 화약이 점화구멍을 완전히 덮고 화약접시에
넘쳐나도록 가득 담는 경향이 있다. 그러나 그렇게 할 경우 점화시간만 지연시키고 마는데, 이유는 약실의
화약을 점화시키기에 앞서 화약접시 밑부분으로 일단 타들어가기 때문이다. 발사를 기다리는 시간은
짜릿한 전율을 느끼게 하는데, 가장 좋은 점화 타이밍을 얻기 위해서는 화약구멍 바로 아랫부분(just below)까지만
화약접시에 화약을 담는 것이다. 이렇게하면 가장 빠른 시간내 격발할 수 있으며, 순간발사까지도 가능하다.
어쨌거나, 발사속도 조절은 격발순간의 스릴을 원하는 사람마다의 취향이 다르므로 거기에 맞추면 된다.
화약접시에 점화화약을 담고나면 뚜껑을 덮는다.
다음은 사격수가 불붙은 화승줄을 가져와 후후 입바람을 불어서 불꽃이 싱싱하게 되살아나게 해야한다.
(옛날 화승총사격수들은 실탄장전 과정에서도 왼손 손가락 사이에 불붙은 화승줄을 끼고 있었다.
그러나 당시상황을 재현하는 입장으로서는 안전을 우선고려, 불붙은 화승은 몇 야드 떨어진 곳에 두었다..)
Most folks when firing a flintlock or similar-type gun tend to overfill the priming pan, feeling that they must cover the touchhole with powder. This practice leads to slow ignition times, because the priming powder has to burn down before it can ignite the main change. While the hang time is thrilling, it can be noted that the best way to prime the musket is to fill the pan *just below* the touchhole. This results in much faster ignition time, even seemingly instantaneous ignition.
However, those who like the thrill of the uncertainly can continue to prime as they wish.
After priming - the pan cover is closed.
Next, the musketeer retrieves his match, and blows on it until it glows. (Ancient musketeers would preform the loading procedure while holding the smoldering match between the fingers of their left hand. For consideration of safety, I load at least a couple of yards away from the burning match..)

화승총 개머리판을 어깨에 밀착시키고 총신을 아랫쪽으로 기울여 화약접시 뚜껑을 밀어서 벗긴다.
총구는 사격 목표지점으로 향하게 한다....

... 그리고 방아쇠를 당겼다. 방아쇠는 간단한 지렛데 원리로 작동되는데, 당기는 것과 동시에
용두에 매달인 화승불꽃이 아래로 내려와 화약접시 화약에 닿는다. 화승총 사격의 신선한 충격을
경험할 수 있는 최고의 순간이다.
... and the trigger is pulled. The trigger operates a simple lever which brings the dog holding the match down into the pan. This is best done with a fairly crisp motion.

처음 몇 발은 아랫쪽에 명중했다. 그래서 조준각도를 달리해 총신 끝을 목표지점 위로 겨냥했는데 상탄(上彈)이 났다.
몇번 조정을 거친 뒤 마지막 몇 발은 표적 한가운데와 인접한 곳에 탁착형성이 됐다.
The first few hits were low, and so I changed the sight picture so that the end of the barrel was well above the point of aim, which resulted in high shots. After some adjustment I was able to bring the final few shots fairly close to the center.

화승총사격 체험은 스릴 그 자체였다. 그리고 전력질주의 쾌감!
이번 화승총 실제사격을 하면서 나는 옛 화승총사격수들이 자기 화승총을 붙잡고 어떤 기분으로
훈련에 임했나하는 것을 아주 가깝게, 피부로 느낄 수 있었다!
Shooting the matchlock was a thrill, and quite a rush!
Going through the process also gave me a much closer feeling to how
the ancient musketeers practiced their craft!
