붇다 32상 80종호 32 signs of Buddha 80 Sub-Characteristics of Buddha
부처는 일반 중생들과 다른 독특한 모습을 갖추었는데
32상호와 80종호의 세부적인 특징이 그것이다.
이는 고대 인도의 신화적인 왕인 전륜성왕(轉輪聖王)이 갖추고있는 신체의 특징을 불교에서 채용한 것으로,
부처가 가지고 있는 32가지 뛰어난 신체의 특징이며, 불상을 조각할 때 거의 여기에 의존한다.
대지도론(大智度論) 4권의 32상을 정리해 본다.
1) 32상(相) 32 signs of Buddha
1.족하안평립상 足下安平立相 발바닥이 평평한 모습
1. Level feet; when walking, not even a hair's space between soles of foot and earth.
1. Feet with a level sole (the Buddha would have an even pace - not like those who wear down their shoes unevenly - such a sole would spread the weight of His body evenly)
2.족하이륜상 足下二輪相 발바닥에 두 개의 바퀴 모양의 무늬가 있다.
2. Thousand-spoked wheel symbol on soles of feet.
2. 1,000 spoked wheel marks on soles (such marks would make the Buddha's hands and feet infinitely flexible - unlike our hands and feet which can flex only in one or two directions because there are only two or three lines on our palms)
3.장지상 長指相 손가락이 길다.
3. Exceptionally long and slender fingers.
4.족근광평상 足跟廣平相 발꿈치가 넓고 평평하다.
4. Heels are full sized, broad, round and smooth.
5.수족지만망상 手足指縵網相 손가락과 발가락 사이에 비단 같은 막이 있다.
5. Webbed toes & fingers; web-like membrane between fingers and toes.
5. netlike lines on palms and soles (this is similar to no.2 - it allows the feet and hands to be infinitely flexible - it is not people of ancient times who had such a feature - even Kuhn Yay Thongsuk Samdaengpan had such a feature on her hands which perhaps explains why she was so resiliant, even at a senior age when travelling to give teachings around the country)
6.수족유연상 手足柔軟相 손발이 부드럽다.
6. Pliant hands and feet; skin of hands/feet is soft and smooth.
6. hands & feet soft skinned (this is not to say that the Buddha was not strong. Normally we associate hunks of taut muscle with strength - but also soft flesh can be full of muscles)
7.족부고만상 足趺高滿相 발등이 높고 원만하다.
7. Arched insteps; unusually high insteps.
7. high raised ankles (this feature is similar to the way the legs of a horse are built -- it gives exceptional strength, leverage and agility to the leg)
8.천여록왕상 ?如鹿王相 장딴지가 사슴왕과 같다.
8. Rounded and firm calves (thighs), like those of a royal stag (ideien = type of deer).
8. taught calf muscles like antelope (again this explains why the Buddha could be so strong - because his legs were strong like those of an antelope - rather than being flacid like those of a buffalo)
9.정립수마슬상 正立手摩膝相 팔을 펴면 손이 무릎까지 내려간다.
9. Exceptionally long arms; hands reach knees when standing.
9. even standing without bending down, the Buddha could touch his knees (such proportions for a person are in fact the ideal - not like Asians who have a long body but short legs or at the other extreme negros and caucasians who have a long body and long legs)
10.음장상 陰藏相 음경이 몸 안에 감추어져 있다.
10. Genitals are retracted (well hidden inside the body).

11.신광장등상 身廣長等相 신체의 가로 세로가 같다.
11. Well proportioned body; body height is equal to armspread.
12.모상향상 毛上向相 털이 위로 향해 있다.
12. Body hair is graceful and grows in upward direction.
13.일일공일모생상 一一孔一毛生相 털구멍마다 하나의 털이 있다.
13. One hair grows from each pore of skin.
13. body hair separate with one hair per pore (not like some people who have whole tufts of hair coming from each pore).
14.금색상 金色相 몸이 금빛이다.
14. Gold-hued body; body gleams with golden light.

15.장광상 丈光相 몸에서 나오는 빛이 두루 비춘다.
15. Body surrounded by radiant aura; body emits halo of light extending outward about three metres.
16.세박피상 細薄皮相 피부가 부드럽고 얇다.
16. Skin is extremely smooth.
16. skin so fine no dust can attach (this is unlike the rough skin of a reptile to which all manner of dirt attaches. In fact the Buddha managed to achieve what women and sportsmen still try to achieve, but without all the effort!)
17.칠처륭만상 七處隆滿相 두 발바닥과 두 손바닥, 두 어깨와 정수리가 두텁고 풍만하다.
17. Feet, shoulders, neck, palms, and crown are well-rounded; seven regions of body are full and rounded.
17. flesh undinted and convex in seven places (these seven places comprise: the back of the hands [2], the upper side of the feet [2], the shoulders [2] and the neck [1])
18.양액하륭만상 兩腋下隆滿相 두 겨드랑이가 두텁고 풍만하다.
18. Sides of body under arms are full; below armpits well filled; not hollow like ordinary people.
19.상신여사자상 上身如師子相 상반신이 사자와 같다.
19. Upper body shaped like lion; majestic upper body.
20.대직신상 大直身相 신체가 크고 곧다.
20. Perfectly firm and erect posture.
21.견원만상 肩圓滿相 어깨가 원만하다.
21. Full and well-rounded shoulders.
22.사십치상 四十齒相 치아가 마흔 개다.
22. 40 teeth as white as snow.
23.치제상 齒齊相 치아가 가지런하다.
23. Straight and even teeth, without gaps, equal in size.
24.아백상 牙白相 어금니가 희다.
24. Four canine teeth that are larger, whiter, and sharper than the others.
25.사자협상 師子頰相 뺨이 사자와 같다.
25. Lion-jawed; full and firm cheeks, like those of a lion.
26.미중득상미상 味中得上味相 맛 중에서 가장 좋은 맛을 느낀다.
26. Saliva imparts delicious taste to anything that is eaten.
27.대설상 大舌相 혀가 크다.
27. Long and flexible tongue; when extended it can touch the hairline.
28.범성상 梵聲相 음성이 맑다.
28. Voice is deep, resonant, pure and strong; can be heard from long distances.
29.진청안상 眞靑眼相 눈동자가 검푸르다.
29. Deep blue eyes, like a blue lotus flower.
30.우안첩상 牛眼睫相 속눈썹이 소와 같다.
30. Long and regular eyelashes, like those of a royal bull.
31.정계상 頂髻相 정수리가 상투 모양으로 돋아나 있다.
31. Bump (protuberance) on top of head, representing wisdom; Sanskrit = Usnisa.
32.백모상 白毛相 두 눈썹 사이에 흰 털이 있다.
32. White-light emitting clockwise curl of hair on forehead; Sanskrit = Urna.
