<기업 및 사업>
대표적인 company(회사)의 종류에는 incorporated(주식회사)가 있다. 회사에는 CEO(최고경영자)부터 일반 staff(직원)에 이르기까지 다양한 position(직급)이 있다.
CEO는 회사 경영의 실권을 쥐고 있는 최고 실력자를 말한다. 예를 들면 다양한 업종의 enterprise(기업)들을 거느린 conglomerate(복합기업)에는 각 업체마다 president(사장)와 management(경영진)가 있지만 중대 사안의 최종 결정은 CEO가 한다. 그리고 board of directors(이사회) 내부에 구성된 executive board(집행 이사회)에서 회사의 운영 방침을 논의하고 결정하게 된다. 사장 밑에는 vice-president(부사장), managing director(상무), executive director(전무), general manager(부장), manager(과장), assistant manager(대리)등의 직급이 있다. 또한 manufacture(제조업)를 하는 회사의 workplace(작업장)에는 employee(종업원)의 supervision(감독)을 맡은 supervisor(주임)가 있다.
회사의 조직 구성을 보면personnel department(인사부)나 accounting department(경리부)와 같은 department(부서)가 있고 그 아래에 section(과)이 있다.
Conglomerate(복합기업)은 대자본을 바탕으로 이질적인 종류의 기업들을 affiliate(계열 회사)로 가지고 있다. 또한 은행과 같은 금융 회사는 main office(본사)를 중심으로 여러 곳의 branch(지점)에서 영업을 한다.
최근에는 경쟁력 강화라는 명목으로 타회사의 경영권을 인수하는(take over) 사례가 늘고 있으며 M&A(합병과 인수)를 전문으로 하는 회사가 생기고 있다. 또한 복합기업도 유사 업종의 subsidiary(자회사)를 경영합리화를 목적으로 합병하고(merge)기업 규모를 축소하고(downsize)있다. 이렇게 해서 기업의 경쟁력은 강화되겠지만, 한편으론 인원 감축에 따른 layoff(해고)로 unemployment rate(실업률)가 증가하는 역작용을 낳고 있다.
