Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white;
Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk;
Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font:
The firefly wakens: waken thou with me.

Now droops the milkwhite peacock like a ghost,
And like a ghost she glimmers on to me.

Now lies the Earth all Danae to the stars,
And all thy heart lies open unto me.

Now slides the silent meteor on, and leaves

진홍색 꽃잎 방금 잠들고, 이제는 하얀 꽃잎 잠드네
궁전길의 사이프러스 나무 흔들림없고

Roger Quilter (1877 - 1953)

영국 Sussex의 Hove 에서 태어나, Eton College와 독일 Frankfurt
의 Hoch Conservatory에서 음악 수업, homosexual인 그에게 당시 사회
에서 받는 stress는 매우 힘든 것으로 2차 대전 중 그의 조카의 죽음 
후 결국은 정신 질환에 빠진다

빅토리아 시대 상류사회의 발라드음악에 기원을 둔 로저 퀼터의 가곡
들은 우아하면서도 섬세하며, 과도한 장식이 배제된 정갈한 아름다움이 
돋보이는 작품들이다

퀼터는 본윌리엄스나 다른 작곡가들이 했던 방식처럼 영국 전통음악
에서 음악적인 원천을 이끌어내었던 것이 아님에도 불구하고, 자국의 위
대한 음악적 유산에 대해 잘 알고 있었고, 스스로 다양한 노래들을 편
곡하기도 하였다
