Flee as a bird(고향생각)는 원래 스페인 민요를 편곡해서 <In Domino Confido>란 제목의 성가곡으로 불리던 곡이었는데, 미국으로 건너가서 <Flee as a bird to your mountain>이란 영어 제목의 성가곡으로 불렸습니다.
우리 말로 번역하면 "새처럼 저 산으로 날아가시오"란 뜻입니다.
그 후 세계적인 트럼펫 연주자인 니니 로소(Nini Rosso)가 "Flee as a bird"란 제목으로 연주함으로써 세계적으로 널리 알려졌습니다.
국내에서는 홍난파 선생이 우리말 번안가사를 붙인 후 <고향 생각> 이란 제목의 가곡으로 불렸는데, 은희 씨도 불렀다.
중학교 음악 교과서에 "스페인 민요"로 실려있다.
이 노래는 1890년 일본 문부성이 낸 음악교과서에 처음 수록되었고, 1939년도 일본 중등학교 음악교과서에도 “추억‘이란 이름으로 실린 적이 있다고 한다.
우리 음악교과서 편찬자들은 일본 음악교과서에 실린 것을 재수입한 것으로 보인다.
