Send Them Out for Your Own Good (Shelach Lecha)Numbers 13:26–14:10
The people of Israel had set up camp in the Wilderness of Paran, and the Promised Land was finally right there in front of them. They were standing right on the edge, just one step away from walking into the land God had promised. Right then, God told Moses to send out leaders from each tribe to scout out the land. In Hebrew, the command was Shelach Lecha, which literally means, "Send them out for your own good."
The 12 men chosen for this weren't just random messengers; the Bible calls them Nasi, meaning they were the top leaders and commanders of their tribes, holding royal authority. Their very names carried God’s incredible plans and purposes—names that meant things like salvation, fame, and loyalty. God had a clear reason for sending these highly respected leaders first: He wanted them to see with their own eyes that Canaan truly was a beautiful land flowing with milk and honey, so they could bring back a powerful vision to inspire everyone else.
But the moment those scouts returned after 40 days of exploring, the whole community hit a massive crisis . Every single one of the 12 agreed that the land was incredibly blessed. They even carried back a cluster of grapes from the Valley of Eshcol so huge that it had to be swung from a pole between them. But suddenly, 10 of the scouts completely flipped the mood and started spreading a toxic, negative report.
"The people living there are way too powerful, and their cities are massive and heavily fortified," they said. "Worse, we saw the descendants of Anak there—they're giants! Compared to them, we felt like absolute grasshoppers, and we must have looked like grasshoppers to them, too."
They blew the problem completely out of proportion and fell into a trap of self-pity and unbelief. This negative attitude spread like wildfire through the entire camp. The people wept out loud all night long, taking their frustration out on Moses and Aaron. They even started rebelling against God, crying out, "We would have been better off dying in Egypt! Let’s pick a new leader and head right back to Egypt—back to the old world!"
Right in the middle of all that despair, two men stood up and tore their clothes in grief: Joshua and Caleb.
These two men saw the exact same land and the exact same giants as everyone else. But they had a completely different take on it.
They stood up and shouted, "If the Lord is pleased with us, He will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. Don't be afraid of them—they are piece of cake for us! They are our bread!"
While the other 10 scouts completely lost sight of God because they were staring at their problems, Joshua and Caleb looked past the massive obstacles and focused on how much bigger God is, holding tightly to His faithful promise.
The 3 Big Roadblocks to Your Vision
Through this sharp contrast, the sermon highlights three major roadblocks we have to overcome when we are moving toward the vision God has for our lives:
1. Negative Attitude: This is a defeatist mindset that exaggerates reality and says, "No way, I can't do this," making you feel like a helpless grasshopper. It completely forgets that Israel never won battles by their own strength in the first place—they won because God was with them.
2. Fear: Fear is a spiritual virus that comes straight from the enemy. When fear takes over, you forget God's promises and your problems look twice as big. When this happens, we need to reset our hearts with what God actually gives us: a spirit of power, love, and a sound, self-controlled mind.
3.A Rebellious Spirit: This is a spiritual derailment where you get overwhelmed by reality, throw your faith out the window, and try to run back to your old life—back to "Egypt."
This Is Our Story Today
This isn’t just an old history lesson about ancient Israel; it’s a story about you and me today.
We are modern-day Nasi—spiritual leaders and scouts sent out into this world to share the Gospel and expand God's kingdom . As we live our lives, we all run into our own version of "giants"—things like financial stress, sickness, and heavy anxieties that try to choke out our faith and drag us down.
But when those moments hit, we need to be like a living fish that swims hard against a fierce current. Don't let the environment sweep you away. Keep your eyes locked on the hope of heaven. Believers who have a secure place in heaven might get knocked down for a moment, but they will never be destroyed.
Think about how it ended for that generation. The people who gave in to fear and unbelief turned around at the very finish line and spent 40 years wandering and failing in the desert. But Joshua and Caleb, the ones who spoke with faith, were the only ones who actually walked into the Promised Land.
What shapes your future isn't the environment around you or how big your problems look. It’s a bold, fearless faith that looks at your situation and sees a God who is infinitely bigger.
To someone without faith, the world looks like an impossible, towering wall. But to a believer standing in faith, the world is nothing more than a good meal—it’s just "bread" for us.
So this week, let's look at life through the eyes of Joshua and Caleb. Step out with confidence, tackle whatever the world throws at you like it's a piece of cake, and live a life of victory. God bless you. — Pastor Byung-Ro Bae

바란 광야에 진을 친 이스라엘 백성들 앞에 마침내 가나안 땅이 눈앞에 다가왔습니다. 이제 한 발짝만 더 내딛으면 약속의 땅에 들어갈 수 있는 그 경계선상에서, 하나님은 모세에게 각 지파의 수령들을 보내 땅을 정탐하라고 말씀하십니다. 히브리어로 ‘쉘라흐 레카’, 즉 “너를 위해 보내라”라는 명령이었지요.
그렇게 뽑힌 12명의 정탐꾼은 단순한 심부름꾼이 아니었습니다. 그들은 성경에서 ‘나씨’라고 부르는, 지파 내에서 왕의 권위를 가진 최고의 지휘관들이었습니다. 이들의 이름 속에는 구원, 명성, 충성 등 하나님의 놀라운 계획과 목적이 고스란히 담겨 있었습니다. 하나님이 이 귀한 지도자들을 먼저 보내신 이유는 분명했습니다. 그들로 하여금 가나안이 정말 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 복된 땅이라는 것을 눈으로 직접 확인하고, 백성들에게 확실한 비전을 심어주길 바라셨던 것입니다.
하지만 40일간의 정탐을 마치고 돌아온 그 순간, 이스라엘 공동체에는 거대한 위기가 찾아옵니다 . 12명 모두가 에스골 골짜기에서 거대한 포도송이를 꿰어 메고 올 만큼 그 땅이 축복의 땅이라는 사실에는 동의했습니다. 그런데 10명의 정탐꾼이 갑자기 분위기를 바꾸며 부정적인 보고를 쏟아내기 시작합니다. “그 땅 거주민은 너무 강하고 성읍은 숨이 막힐 정도로 견고하다. 게다가 거기서 거인족인 아낙 자손을 보았는데, 그들에 비하면 우리는 전적으로 메뚜기 같다”라며 절망을 퍼뜨린 것입니다.
이들은 눈앞의 문제를 지나치게 과장했고, 스스로를 메뚜기로 비하하는 불신앙에 빠져버렸습니다. 이 부정적인 보고는 순식간에 온 백성의 마음을 전염시켰습니다. 백성들은 밤새도록 통곡하며 모세와 아론을 원망했고, 급기야 “차라리 애굽에서 죽는 게 나았다! 새로운 지도자를 세워서 다시 애굽(세상)으로 돌아가자”라며 하나님을 향해 무서운 반항을 하기 시작합니다.
그 절망의 한복판에서, 옷을 찢으며 일어선 두 사람이 있었습니다. 바로 여호수아와 갈렙이었습니다.
두 사람은 똑같은 땅을 보았고, 똑같은 거인들을 보았습니다. 하지만 고백은 완전히 달랐습니다. 그들은 “하나님이 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리는 능히 이긴다. 그들은 우리의 밥이다! 두려워하지 말라”고 외쳤습니다. 열 명의 정탐꾼은 현실의 문제 앞에서 하나님을 잃어버렸지만, 여호수아와 갈렙은 거대한 문제보다 훨씬 더 크신 하나님과 그분의 신실하신 약속을 바라보았던 것입니다.
설교자는 이 극명한 차이를 통해, 우리가 하나님이 주신 비전을 향해 나아갈 때 반드시 극복해야 할 세 가지 장애물을 짚어줍니다.
1. 부정적인 태도: 현실을 과장하고 "안 된다, 못 한다" 하며 스스로를 메뚜기처럼 여기는 패배주의입니다. 이스라엘은 애초에 자기 힘으로 이겨온 백성이 아니라, 하나님이 함께하셔서 이겨온 백성임을 잊은 태도입니다.
2. 두려움: 마귀가 심어주는 영적 바이러스입니다. 두려움에 사로잡히면 약속은 잊히고 문제만 커 보입니다. 이때 우리는 하나님이 주시는 마음, 즉 ‘능력과 사랑과 근신(셀프 컨트롤)하는 마음’으로 무장해 믿음을 정결하게 해야 합니다.
3. 반항정신: 현실이 힘들다고 해서 신앙의 자리를 내팽개치고 과거의 세상(애굽)으로 도망치려는 영적인 탈선입니다.
이 말씀은 단순히 먼 옛날 이스라엘의 역사 이야기가 아닙니다. 오늘을 사는 바로 우리들의 이야기입니다.
오늘날 우리도 하나님 나라의 확장과 복음을 위해 이 세상에 파송된 영적 지도자이자 정탐꾼, 즉 ‘나씨(왕 같은 제사장)’들입니다. 세상에서 살아가다 보면 가난, 질병, 근심이라는 거대한 아낙 자손을 만나 믿음이 오염되거나 낙심할 때가 있습니다.
그럴 때 우리는 거친 계곡의 물살을 거슬러 힘차게 뛰어오르는 살아있는 물고기처럼, 세상의 환경에 휩쓸리지 말고 천국의 소망을 붙잡아야 합니다. 천국이 예비된 성도들은 지금 잠시 쓰러질지언정 결코 망하지 않기 때문입니다.
결국 불신앙과 두려움에 빠졌던 이 세대는 가나안 문턱에서 뒤돌아 서서 40년 동안 광야를 방황하다 실패했지만, 오직 믿음으로 고백한 여호수아와 갈렙만이 약속의 땅에 들어갔습니다. 우리의 미래를 결정하는 것은 내 앞의 환경이나 문제의 크기가 아니라, 상황보다 크신 하나님을 바라보는 ‘담대한 믿음’입니다.
세상은 믿음이 없는 자에게는 거대한 벽이지만, 믿음을 가진 성도들에게는 그저 맛있는 ‘밥’일 뿐입니다. 이번 한 주간, 여호수아와 갈렙 같은 눈을 가지고 당당하게 세상이라는 밥을 맛있게 먹으며 승리하는 삶을 살아가시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 배병로 목사
