This is a kind of complicated question to me. // Everything depends on what types of class I take and also what grade I am in my college. // (Let’s say) on one hand, / if I take a discussion-based class related with my major, economics, at least as a junior, / I would rather listen to my professor and sometimes raise my hand whenever I have a question about the class / because most of the materials are usually completely done by previewing something crucial for the class in advance. // That’s why it would be really good enough to understand what my teacher says in the class. // On the other hand, if I take a non discussion-based class at best as a sophomore, / I would like to take a note as much as I need / because it helps me to prepare for the mid or final term exam / in terms of being able to exactly remember what I’ve done in the class with the note. //

Tip 2: Frankly speaking, blue jeans came from western countries for a long time ago. // However, from the young to the old in my home country, we often wear a pair of blue jeans with very comfortable t-shirts and sneakers. // That’s why blue jeans are very interesting and common clothes in my home country. //

읽기 지문을 통해 알아내야 하는 세가지 사항

First Step,

읽기 지문을 읽기 전, / Narrator가 주는 짧은 Message를 통해 “학교가 어떤 프로그램이나 건물 (or 시설물)을 만들거나 없애는 혹은 변경하고자 하는 Announcement”인지 / 반면에 “학생이나 교수가 학교의 프로그램이나 시설물 (or 건물)에 대해서 학교측에 불평이나 제안을 하는 Letter”인지 알아낸다. //

Second Step,

읽기 지문의 제목(Title)과 첫 번째 문장(Topic Sentence)을 읽으면서 / 캠퍼스의 어느 부문(Taking a class/Doing activity/Staying in dorm/Getting a job)에서 Issue가 시작 되었는지 알아낸다. //

Third Step,

이렇게 해서 알아낸 읽기 지문의 “Topic”을 설명하는 “두 가지 구별된 이유”를 찾아내고 노트 필기 한다. //

주인공과 조연을 가려낸다. // 대화에서 주인공은 자신만의 독특한 목소리를 내면서 읽기 지문에서 언급되지 않은 내용을 위주로 자신의 주장을 피력합니다. // 반면에 조연은 읽기 지문의 내용 즉 읽기 지문의 주제나 이유를 그대로 묘사하거나 혹은 마치 자기 의견인 것처럼 다소 말을 바꿔서 말하기도 하고 / 나아가서는 주인공의 개인적이고 강력한 의견에 단순히 대응하면서 전체 대화를 유연하게 이끈다. //

***3 번: “Opening a Writing Center” (Taking a class)

Reading Passage:

학교는 학교 신문을 통해 “Writing Center를 열겠다” 고 공지합니다. // 첫 번째 이유, “학생들이 Writing실력을 높일 수 있기 때문에 좋은 성적을 받는데 도움이 될 것이다.” // 두 번째 이유, “학기 중 이곳에서 일할 수 있는 Job을 주겠다.” //

Conversation:

대화에서 여학생은 학교의 안건에 “동의” 합니다. (In the conversation, / the female student strongly agrees with the announcement / that the University has a plan to open a new writing center / in order to encourage all the students to improve their writing skill / and also give’em a chance to work at it as a part-time job.) //

첫 번째 이유, 여학생은 강조 하기를 / “보통 다른 교수들은 자신의 전공과목에 관한 material을 가르치기도 바쁘기 때문에 학생들의 paper or report를 일일이 첨삭해 줄만큼 시간이 없는데 / 만약 이런 center가 생겨서 학생들이 Writing실력을 높일 수 있다면 면학에 큰 도움이 될 것이다.” (First of all, she emphasizes / that they could be given much personal attention face to face from the teachers working in that department / because it’s been very hard (for them) to get quite many opportunities from their professors who’ve been so busy teaching their major subject. // She thinks that it helps students to improve their writing skill very effectively. //

또한, “라이팅 센터에 관심이 있는 학생들이 이곳에서 일하게 된다면, extra money를 벌뿐 아니라 전문화된 경험을 쌓을 수 있어서 졸업 후 Job을 얻을 때 큰 도움이 될 것이다.” (Furthermore, she firmly believes that this writing center can give a chance to those who want to work at it as a part-time job / in terms of being able to not only make extra money but also experience professional job experience for the future job after graduation from college. //
