1. The Ass Carrying the Image
그림 나르는 당나귀
An ass once carried through the streets of a city a famous woodenImage, to be placed in one of its Temples.
옛날에 한 당나귀가 시거리를 관통해서 어떤 유명한 나무로 된 그림을 그 도시의 신전들 중 하나에 놓일 것을 날랐다
As he passed along, the crowd made lowly prostration before the Image.
당나귀가 지나 갈때마다 사람들은 모두 그림 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 절을 했어요.
The Ass, thinking that they bowed their heads in token of respect for himself, bristled up with pride, gave himself airs, and refused to move another step.
한데 이 당나귀는 사람들이 전부 다 자기 자신에 대한 예의 표시로 절을 하는 줄 알고 기고만장해져서는 허리를 꼿꼿이 세우고 더 이상 길을 가기를 거부했어요.
The driver, seeing him thus stop, laid his whip lustily about his shoulders and said, "O you perverse dull-head! it is not yet come to this, that men pay worship to an Ass."
당나귀가 멈추는 것을 본 마부는 당나귀의 등짝을 세게 후려치고는 말했어요.
"이런, 괴팍하고 어리석은 당나귀를 보았나! 누가 이런 당나귀 한 마리를 숭배하려 드는 줄 알고!"
Lesson : They are not wise who give to themselves the credit due to others.
교훈: 다른 사람에 의해 기고 만장해지는 사람들은 현명하지 못하다.
2. The Ass and the Grasshopper
당나귀와 여치
An ass, having heard some Grasshoppers chirping, was highly enchanted; and, desiring to possess the same charms of melody, demanded what sort of food they lived on to give them such beautiful voices.
몇몇 메뚜기들이 즐겁게 울어대는 것을 들은 한 당나귀가 신이 나서 콧노래를 불렀어요. 그리고 자기도 똑같은 소리를 가지면 얼마나 좋을까 생각하며 무슨 음식을 먹으면 저렇게 예쁜 소리가 날까 궁금해했답니다.
They replied, "The dew." The Ass resolved that he would live only upon dew, and in a short time died of hunger.
메뚜기들은 이슬이라고 대답했어요. 당나귀는 자기도 이슬만 먹고 살기고 다짐을 했답니다. 그리고 곧 배고픔때문에 죽게되고 말았어요.
Lesson : Even a fool is wise-when it is too late!
교훈: 자신을 실수를 깨달았을 때는 이미 너무 늦어버린 후이다.
3. The Ass and His Driver
당나귀과 마부
An ass, being driven along a high road, suddenly started off and bolted to the brink of a deep precipice.
큰 길을 따라 마차를 끌고 잇던 당나귀는 갑자기 깊은 절벽 낭떠러지고 도망가려고 했어요.
While he was in the act of throwing himself over, his owner seized him by the tail, endeavoring to pull him back.
당나귀가 낭떠러지고 달리고 있는 동안 마부는 당나귀의 꼬리를 잡아서 그를 뒤로 끌어내려고 안간힘을 썼습니다.
When the Ass persisted in his effort, the man let him go and said, "Conquer, but conquer to your cost."
그래도 당나귀가 포기하지 않고 계속 달아나려 애쓰자, 마부는 당나귀를 보내주며 이렇게 말했어요. "가거라, 하지만 이건 모두 네 손해야."
Lesson : A willful beast must go his own way
교훈: 제멋대로 구는 짐승은 항상 자기가 하고 싶은 대로 하지 않으면 안된다.
