을 뜻하는 ‘팁’ 역시 acronym이다.
TIP의 어원(etymology)
A tip is a payment to certain service sector workers beyond the advertised price. Leaving some small change on a restaurant table is a common way of giving a tip to the serving staff. In some circumstances (such as tipping government workers), tipping is illegal and considered a bribe. A tip is sometimes called a gratuity.
팁은 서비스 분야 종사자에게, 공시된 가격 이외에 추가로 지급하는 돈이다. 레스토랑 테이블에 약간의 잔돈을 남기는 것은 음식 시중을 든 종업원에게 팁을 주는 통상적인 방법이다. 경우에 따라서 (정부 관리에게 팁을 주는 것과 같은 경우) 팁을 주는 것은 불법이며 뇌물로 간주된다. 때로는 팁을 ‘gratuity’라고 한다.

확실치는 않지만 흔히 “tip”이란 단어는
“to insure prompt service(신속한 서비스를 보장받기 위해)”
“to insure promptness(신속한 처리를 보장받기 위해)”
“to insure proper service(적절한 서비스를 보장받기 위해)”
“to improve performance(실행을 촉진시키기 위해)”
와 같은 말의 두문자라고 주장되기도 한다.
