The word emoji is a combination of the Japanese word e which means picture, and moji which means character. Emojis were first used in cell phone communication in Japan in 1999. Emoji and emojis are both considered correct plural forms of the word emoji. Oxford English Dictionary chose an emoji crying tears of joy as the word of the year of 2015.

일본어 단어로, 그림을 뜻하는 絵 에[*]와 문자를 뜻하는 文字 모지[*]로 이루어졌다.
이모티콘과 이름이 유사하여 혼동하기 쉽지만 (실제로 이모지를 이모티콘으로 오해하는 사람이 많다.) 두 단어의 어원은 전혀 관련이 없다.
또한 이모티콘은 텍스트의 조합으로 형태를 나타낸 것이고 이모지는 이미지 자체가 하나의 문자로 취급되는 점에서 다르다.
