What is the meaning of “You are so mean”?

In American English, this means “you are an unpleasant person”.
In British English, it means “you are a miserly or selfish person”.
In British English, the American meaning is also widely understood, and it is frequently used in both senses at once.

This phrase is quite common in colloquial English language. When a speaker says to someone , “You are so mean “ it could mean few things .

What is the meaning of “You are so mean!”?

The expression‎ doesn’t mean what it sounds like. I think its an American thing and a little hard to explain. It is something that you just grow up with. I’ve often heard it said during times of silliness and fun.
I think that I have mostly heard it said sarcastically from girls toward mischievous or naughty boyfriends.
You are so mean: could also be a real criticism and an accusation that indicates that you are not a nice person, and you may be cruel or unfeeling.
BUT USUALLY
You are so mean. Is said sarcastically, indicating that you are a naughty or mischievous rascal. It is a very mild scolding that it is almost said in an approving way.
For instance, if you and some friends were out having fun and you told your best buddy (in front of your girlfriend) that he has a pimple growing on his nose. Your girl-friend might say to you “You are so mean” and give you a gentle slap on the wrist or a shove.
She is indicating that she knows you did something naughty so she gives you a mild scolding but at the time she may think the naughtiness is kind of funny or cute. She delivers her mild scolding with a twinkle in her eye that allows her to join in and prolong the fun. At Mr Pimple-nose’s expense of course.
It is possible that if someone was very angry or very hurt that they might say “you are SO mean” in a very critical accusatory way. Allot would depend upon the situation and the tone. It is a phrase that can change it’s real meaning and impact with the tone of voice and the situation.
I hope I answered the question. It is difficult phrase to try and explain since it could have more then one use.
