For example, I hope you'll drop me a line soon.

This idiom uses line in the sense of "a few words in writing," a usage first recorded in 1647.

Her deeds always correspond to her principles.
＝Her deeds and principles always correspond.

* Drop me a line를 글자 그대로 번역하면 '나에게 줄을 하나
떨어뜨려 달라'란 뜻이 되는데 이런 뜻이 아니고 '편지 해'
'소식이나 주게'란 말이다.

* line은 간단한 편지, 엽서를 가리키고 drop은 '보낸다'는 뜻이다.

Let's keep in touch.도
같은 뜻인데 소식 끊지 말고 서로 touch(연락,접촉)를 유지하자는 뜻이다. 떠나는 사람이 I'll be in touch라고
하면 '종종 연락할께'란 뜻이 된다.

The Korean economy is based on exports. Last year, the nation's

[John's Diary]
2분이 2시간처럼 길게 느껴졌다. 지하철역을 부리나케 나와
극장으로 뛰었다. 황급히 뛰다가 마주오던 아가씨랑 정면으로
부딪쳤다. 아가씨가 들고있던 서류가 바닥에 와르르 쏟아졌다.
서류를 모아 집어주고 죄송하다고 몇 번을 사과한 뒤 잽싸게
달리기 시작했다. 오늘따라 거리에 사람은 왜 이리 많은지.
날씨는 후덥지근하고 끈끈했다. 극장 앞에 줄이 길게
늘어서있었다.
The 2 minutes felt like 2 hours! I hurried out of the station
and ran towards the theater. I crashed into an oncoming lady.
A pile of papers the lady was holding dropped and scattered
everywhere. I apologized again and again, and broke into a
run. Well, today would not have been complete without so many
people on the street! The crowds added to the absurdity of it
all. It was disgustingly hot and humid, as usual. I finally
got to the theater and saw a never-ending line of people.


1. Hurried out of the station: Hurry 서두른다는 뜻을 가진
동사지요. 명사로 써서 in a hurry를 쓸 수도 있습니다.
I ran out of the station in a hurry.


2. Crashed into an oncoming lady: Crash는 충돌한다는
뜻입니다. 여기서 주의깊게 볼 건 into라는 전치삽니다.
원래 앞에서 오는 사람한테 갈 수 있는 지점은 바로 그
앞까지겠지요. 그런데 충돌을 한다면 그 선을 넘어가는 것이지요.
그래서 into를 씁니다.


다음 두 문장을 비교해보시면 차이를 아실 수 있습니다.
Hey, are you driving towards my house?
너 지금 내집을 향해서 운전하고 있는거야?
Nope. I'm driving INTO your house.
아니지비. 내 집을 차로 부셔버릴 작정이야.
Oncoming은 앞에서 온다는 뜻입니다. 눈에 보이는 것이 올 때도
oncoming으로 추상적인 것이 다가온다고 할 때도 oncoming이지요.
I'm not ready for the oncoming shockwave of societal
transformation.
난 다가올 사회 변화에 준비가 안된 것 같애.


3. Broke into a run: Break는 단절을 기본 의미로 하는
동사입니다.
깨진다는 것도 원형을 보존하던 물건이 원형에서 단절되는 것을
의미하지요.
또, 어떤 동작을 취하고 있다 갑자기 그 동작과 단절하고 다른
동작을 취할 때도 break를 씁니다. 단절을 뜻하니까. 여기서의
용법이지요.
He broke into a smile when he heard it.
그 말을 듣고 갑자기 미소를 지었다.
그냥 smile과 다른 점은 무표정해 있다가 "갑자기" 미소를
띄었다는 것이지요.
동사를 공부할 때는 먼저 "기본 의미"를 파악하세요.
Break의 기본 의미는 "깨다, 부수다"가 아닙니다. "원형에서
끊어지는 것, 단절"이 기본 의미지요. 기본 의미에서 출발하면
사전에 나와 있는 그 수많은 뜻이 그냥 이해가 되지요. 변성기가
된 걸 영어로 뭐라고 할까요?
His voice broke.
이게 왜 변성기일까요? "원래" 목소리가 원형에서 벗어나서
(단절되서) "전혀 다른" 목소리가 됐기 때문입니다.


4. Today would not have been complete without so many people
on the street: 미국인들이 흔히 쓰는 문장 구조입니다. 엎친데
덮친 격, 오늘같은 날 하필이면 …에 해당하는 표현입니다.
Today would not have been complete without a construction in
the middle of the road!
오늘같은 날 꼭 도로 중간에서 공사를 해야되는 거야?


5. The crowds added to the absurdity of it all: 하필이면
무엇무엇하다에 해당하는 또 다른 표현입니다.
Add to는 정도를 더한다고 할 때 쓰는 말입니다.
His father's death added to his misery.
아버지가 돌아가셔 그는 더욱 불행해졌다.


6. Disgustingly hot and humid: 우리들이 영작을 할 때 가장
어려움을 많이 느끼는 것 중 하나가 형용사와 부사지요.
"더럽게(끔찍하게) 춥다, 덥다" 등에서 어려운 건 춥다와 덥다가
아니라 강조 부사 또는 형용사니까요. 부사 및 형용사는 많이
읽고, 듣고 봐서 쌓아두는 것 밖에 왕도가 없습니다.
영어로 된 신문이나 책을 읽으면서 눈으로만 읽지말고 한번쯤 더
새겨보면 큰 도움이 됩니다.
Disgustingly라는 단어는 알아도 이런 상황에서 강조 부사로 쓸
수 있다는 걸 모르면 헛일이니까요.


7. Never-ending line of people: Never-ending story라는 영화도
있었지요. 끝없이 늘어져 있는 줄을 말합니다.
수식어구를 만드는 방법은 여러가지가 있지만 이처럼 하이픈을
사용하는 것도 유용합니다. Never-ending 같은 수식어는 이미
거의 굳어져 버린 표현이지만, 자신만의 수식어가 필요할 때는
어떻게 할까요? 다음 문장을 영어로 옮긴다면 …
"넌 뭐야 짜샤"라고 말하는 눈으로 날 쳐다 보더라니까.
He gave me a "who-the-hell-are-you" look.


다른 말로 하자면 다음과 같이 됩니다.
He looked at me as if to say "who the hell are you."


Teens model themselves after the movie stars.
십대들은 인기가수를 따라하려고 하지


연예인의 행동거지가 자주 문제가 되는것은 특히 청소년들이 흉내내고 따라하기 때문이죠.


이렇게 누군가를 본받다, 따라하다, 흉내내다에 해당하는 단어는
model입니다.
이게 동사가 되면 모방하다,..의 형을 따라 만들다. 본뜨다 란 뜻으로 쓰입니다.


Model oneself after(on) someone은 누군가를 본받다란 말입니다.
Teens look at our movie stars and they model themselves after them.
십대들은 인기 영화배우들을 자기 모델로 삼고 따라한다.


He tried to model himself after his father.
자기 아버지를 본받으려 노력했다.

처음으로 메디슨의 주니어 R.O.T.C. 생도들과 대면을 하는 페인은
아이들의 지저분하고 무질서한 모습을 보고 군기를 잡고자 한다. 그런
데 폭스라는 학생만 페인의 말에 대답이 없자 페인은 그에게 소리를
지른다.


Payne : And what is your damage, musclehead?! You stupid?! You
ignorant?! Or you just plain old deaf?!
(그리고 자네는 뭐가 문젠가, 돌대가리?! 자네는 바본가?!
무식한가?! 아니면 그냥 그저 귀머거린가?!)


* damage : 여기서는 problem과 같은 뜻으로 사용됨.
(대열의 끝에서 가만히 있던 윌리거가 한마디 한다.)
Wuligar : Yes, sir.
(예, 그렇습니다.)


Actually he is deaf.
(사실 그는 귀머거리가 맞아요.)


Payne : Oh. Well, thank you. Now drop down, give twenty-five
more FOR SPEAKING OUT OF LINE!!!
(음. 그래, 고맙구나. 이제 바닥에 엎드려서 무례하게 말을
한 대가로 (팔굽혀펴기) 25개 더 하도록 해!!!)

(미안하다, 장애자 아저씨. 난 자네 기분을 상하게 할 뜻은
없었네.)

Do you speak sign language? Can you read lips?
(자네 수화 할 줄 아나? 입술도 읽을 줄 아나?)

* real lips : 보통 청각 장애자들은 수화를 못하는 사람의
말을 알아듣기 위해 입술을 읽는 법을 배운다.
(폭스는 고개를 끄덕인다.)

『편지 해』를 영작하면 “Write a letter to me.”라고 할 것 같지만 실제로 일상 회화에서는 훨씬 간단한 “Drop me a line.”이라는 말을 많이 쓴다. 이 말을 해석하면 a line은 「편지 한 줄」drop은 「떨어뜨리다」이므로 drop a line은 「편지 한 줄을 떨구다」 즉 「몇자 적어 보내다」라는 말에서 『편지하세요.』라는 표현이 된 것이다.
A : I’ll be seeing you.
B : Keep me informed of the progress.
A : I will. I promise.
B : Well, goodbye. Drop me a line.
