알로카시아속의 식물은 주로 인도네시아와 태평양의 섬에서 자라며 우리에게는 관엽식물로 잘 알려져 있으나 원산지에서는 구경을 식용으로 이용하고 있습니다.
알로카시아는 천남성과의 상록성 식물로 열대 및 아열대, 아시아, 호주 동부에 79종이 있습니다.
