Today we're going to talk about the structure [~ as (much) as ~], which is very important but difficult for a lot of Korean people to use correctly.

오늘은, [~ as (much) as ~]구조에 대해서 이야기 해 보겠습니다. 굉장히 중요하면서도 한국인들에게 정확히 쓰기가 어려운 구조이죠.

It's used to talk about how two people or things are equal or unequal in some way.

이 구조는 두 사람 혹은 두 개의 무언가가 어떤 부분에 있어 같거나 같지 않을 때 사용된답

니다.

Jack studies as much as Jim.

잭은 짐만큼 공부를 한다

I don't like Kimchi as much as you.

나도 너만큼 김치를 싫어해

My girlfriend doesn't eat as much as me.

내 여자친구는 나만큼 많이 먹지 않아

You can change the structure by taking out [much] and replacing it with a different ADJECTIVE or ADVERB so that the structure becomes [~ as ADJECTIVE as ~] or [~ as ADVERB as ~].

이 구조는 much를 빼고 다른 형용사나 부사를 넣어서 대체 가능하답니다.

그래서 구조는 [~ as ADJECTIVE as ~] or [~ as ADVERB as ~] 이렇게 바뀐답니다.

Don't say [ADJECTIVE as much as] or [ADVERB as much as]. This is common mistake many Koreans make.

절대로 [ADJECTIVE as much as] or [ADVERB as much as] 구조로 말하면 안된답니다.

가장 한국인들이 많이 하는 실수이기도 합니다.

Karl is as tall as Donnie.

Karl is tall as much as Donnie.

칼은 다니만큼 크다

Tigers run as fast as lions.

Tigers run fast as much as lions.

호랑이는 사자만큼 빨리 달린다

You can also change the structure by adding a NOUN after [much] so that the structure becomes [~ as much/many NOUN as ~]

마찬가지로 역시 명사를 much뒤에 붙혀서 [~ as much/many NOUN as ~], 다른 구조로 쓸 수가 있답니다.

I eat as much rice as you.

나는 너만큼 밥을 먹는다

I eat as many hamburgers as you.

나는 니가 먹는 햄버거 만큼 많이 먹는다

But you should know that in this case, you're generally talking about the amount of rice/hamburgers that you eat. So if your friend eats a bowl of rice and you also eat a bowl of rice, then you can use the structure like this.

하지만 아셔야 할 부분은, 지금 이때는 햄버거의 양을 얘기하고 있는 거랍니다.

만약, 친구가 한공기의 밥을 먹고 여러분도 한 공기의 밥을 먹는다면 이 구조를 쓸 수가

있답니다.

However, if you want to stress how often you eat rice, then you should put the NOUN before [as much as]

그러나, 만약 얼마나 자주 밥을 먹는지 강조하고 싶다면, 명사를 [as much as]전에

붙혀서 쓸 수가 있답니다.

I eat rice as much as you.

나는 너만큼 밥을 자주 먹어.

If your friend eats rice every day and you also eat rice every day, then you should use the structure like this.

만약 친구가 밥을 매일 먹고, 당신도 역시 밥을 매일 먹는다면, 이와 같은 구조를 쓸 수가

있는 거랍니다.

In all of the examples above, a NOUN or PRONOUN comes after [~ as (much) as ~]. Now, let's look at some other things you can put there instead.

위의 예문들로, 명사나 대명사가 [~ as (much) as ~]뒤에 붙는답니다.

다른 것을 사용한 예문들을 살펴보겠습니다.

[as (much) as I can], [as (much) as possible], and [as (much) as I thought] are all common endings for this structure.

[as (much) as I can], [as (much) as possible], and [as (much) as I thought]

이러한 문장들이 흔하게 문장이 마무리되는 구조 중에 하나랍니다.

Whenever I go to an all-you-can-eat restaurant, I eat as much as I can.

내가 뷔페에 갈때마다, 난 먹을 수 있는 만큼 먹는다.

To save money, I try to cook at home as much as possible.

돈을 아끼기 위해, 난 가능한 만큼 집에서 요리를 할려고 한다.

Japan wasn't as expensive as I thought.

일본은 내가 생각한 만큼 비싸지 않았다.

If you want to talk about two different periods of time, you can use [as (much) as before], [as (much) as ~ ago], [as much as ~ in/on/during...], or [as (much) as ~ when S V O].

만약 여러분이 다른 두 기간을 얘기하고 있다면, [as (much) as before], [as (much) as ~ ago], [as much as ~ in/on/during...], or [as (much) as ~ when S V O] 구조들을 쓸수가 있답니다.

I'm not as angry as before.

난 전만큼은 화가 나지 않는다.

People don't buy CDs as much as 10 years ago.

사람들은 CD를 10년 전만큼은 사지 않는다.

The economy didn't grow as much as it did in 2010.

경제가 2010년 만큼 성장하지 못했다.

My father isn't as tall as he was when he was 20.

아버지는 그가 20살이였을 때 만큼 크지 않다.

The previous examples are all using periods of time in the past. If you want to use a period of time in the future, it's possible but a little bit less common.

지금까지는 과거 시제를 이용한 예문이였습니다.

만약 미래 시제를 이용하고 싶다면, 가능은 합니다만 흔한 구조는 아니랍니다.

I'm not as rich as I will be when I win lottery.

난 복권에 당첨 된 것 만큼의 부자는 아니다.

Finally, one more way you can use this structure is like this: [~ as much of a/an NOUN as ~].

마지막으로, [~ as much of a/an NOUN as ~] 구조를 쓸 수 있는 방법이 한 가지가 더

있습니다.

Michael Jackson was as much of a genius as Mozart.

마이클 잭슨은 모차르트 만큼 천재 였다.

You're as much of an idiot as he is.

넌 그만큼 멍청해.

The business wasn't as much of a success as I thought it would be.

사업은 내가 예상했던 것 만큼 성공적이지 않았다.

Be careful! If you want to say ~할 만큼 you have to use a completely different structure in English: [S V O to the point that S V O]. Since this is an important structure, we're going to look at it in a separate lesson.

주의하세요!. 만약 ~할 만큼의 구조를 쓰고 싶다면 완전히 다른 구조인 [S V O to the point that S V O]를 쓰셔야 합니다. 이 구조 역시 중요한 구조임으로 다른 수업에서 따로 다루도록 하겠습니다.
