[unless] vs. [as long as] ~하지만 않으면, ~하지 않은 한, ~하기만 하면, ~하는 한
Today we're going to talk about two very important structures that are used a lot in everyday conversation: [unless] and [as long as].
unless와 as long as랍니다.
Both are used to give a condition for doing something, but "unless" is negative and similar to "if not," while "as long as" is positive and similar to "if."
개념과 비슷하며 반면에, as long as는 긍정형 또는 if와 비슷하게 쓰인답니다.
≃ I will go to the beach tomorrow if it doesn't rain.
Now let's change "unless" to "as long as" without changing the overall meaning of the sentence.
그럼, 이제는 unless를 as long as로 전반적인 의미의 변화 없이 바꿔 보도록 하겠습니다.
I will go to the beach tomorrow as long as it doesn't rain.
≃ I will go to the beach tomorrow if it doesn't rain.
Even though it's fine if you just use "if not" or "if," it's good to use "unless" or "as long as" in a situation where you want to stress specific conditions or circumstances that are necessary to do something.
싶을 때에는 unless 나 as long as를 쓰시는 게 좋답니다.
When it comes to the order, you can put "unless" and "as long as" either at the beginning of the sentence [unless/as long as S V O, S V O] or in the middle of the sentence [S V O unless/as long as S V O] without changing the meaning.
Unless it's free, I won't go.
= I won't go unless it's free.
As long as it's free, I'll go.
= I'll go as long as it's free.
Try to avoid double negatives. Because "unless" is already negative, that means it shouldn't be followed by a negative form in general. Keep in mind that this isn't a rule, but a recommendation.
You can borrow money from me unless you don't pay me back.
You can't borrow money from me unless you pay me back.
Even though technically the first example isn't wrong, it's a little bit confusing and difficult to understand. The second example is much clearer.
Of course, if you really want to stress a more positive meaning, then it's fine to put a negative form after "unless" rather than before.
You should come unless you don't want to.
You shouldn't come unless you want to.
In this case, both sentences are correct and easy to understand, but the first one is more encouraging and positive while the second one is more discouraging and negative.
More Examples:
1. Unless we leave now, we’ll be late.
2. You can't enter unless you have a ticket.
3. We'll catch our flight as long as we leave soon.
4. You should not swim in the river unless you are a good swimmer.
5. As long as my boss says that it's ok, I'm going to take a day off.
