하워드 켈리와 우유 한 잔
하워드 켈리는 아주 큰 설탕 도매사업가의 외아들로 태어나 어린 시절을 부러움 없이 자랐습니다. 켈리의 아버지는 잘 나가는 사업가로 노예 해방을 부르짖으며 스스로 남북전쟁에 참전할 정도로 가난하고 불쌍한 사람들을 배려하는 사람을 사랑하는 부자였습니다.
하워드 켈리는 집안이 부유했음에도 불구하고 대학 등록금을 아버지에게 의존하지 않고 아르바이트로 등록금을 준비하는 건실한 학생이었습니다.
1863년 어느 봄날 이었다.
하워드 켈리는 집집마다 방문하며 이것저것을 파는 아르바이트를 했습니다. 그렇게 하루 종일 방문판매를 다녀 저녁이 되자 지치고 배가 고팠습니다. 그러나 주머니에는 달랑 다임(10센트) 동전 하나만 있어 그것으로는 적당한 것을 사 먹을 수도 없었습니다.
다음 집으로 가서 문을 두드렸습니다. 문이 열리더니 예쁜 소녀가 나왔습니다. 젊은이는 부끄러워서 배고프다는 말을 못했고 물 한잔만 달라고 했습니다. 그러나 그 소녀는 이 사람이 배가 고프다는 사실을 알았는지 큰 컵에 우유 한 잔을 내왔습니다. 젊은이는 그 우유를 마신 후 얼마를 드려야 하냐고 물었습니다.
소녀는 '엄마는 친절을 베풀면서 돈을 받지 말라고 했어요'라고 말했습니다.

하워드 켈리는 마음으로 깊이 고마워하며 “고맙습니다. 정말 고맙습니다.”라고 인사를 했습니다.
그로부터 수년이 지난 후 그 소녀는 큰 병에 걸렸습니다. 이 병은 그 도시의 병원에서는 감당할 수 없는 큰병이라고 했습니다. 다행히 큰 병원에 있는 의사는 고칠 수 있다고 하여 큰 도시의 전문의가 있는 병원으로 보내졌습니다. 그때 온 전문의 의사는 하워드 켈리(Howard Atwood. Kelly, 1858-1943년) 박사 였습니다. 이 의사는 먼 옛날 그 소녀에게 우유 한 잔을 얻어 마셨던 바로 그 젊은이였습니다. 작은 친절이 큰 인연이 되어 다시 만난 것입니다.
그 때 방문 판매를 하면 돈을 벌였던 하워드 켈리는 유명한 의사가 되었습니다. 그는 산부인과 분야에서는 독보적인 존재로 명문 존스 홉킨스 의과대학의 창설멤버였습니다.
하워드 켈리 박사는 환자가 온 마을을 확인하고 단번에 그 옛날 그에게 우유를 준 소녀임을 알아보았습니다. 그는 부인과 질환으로 상당히 힘든 병이였음에도 불구하고 최선의 하다여 마침내 치료에 성공했습니다.
하워드 켈리 박사는 치료가 다 끝났을 때 청구서에는 이렇게 써 있었습니다.
"'우유 한 잔으로 치료비는 모두 지불되었음' ( Paid in full with one glass of milk)"

A Beautiful Story From "The Power-Of-Kindness"
The year was 1863, on a spring day in Northern Pennsylvania.
A poor boy was selling goods door-to-door to pay his way through school. He realized he had only a dime left, and that he was hungry. So he decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry and so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept payment for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strengthened also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown, he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested from the business office to pass the final billing to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words:
"PAID IN FULL WITH ONE GLASS OF MILK..."

Dr. Howard Kelly
Dr. Howard Kelly was a distinguished physician who, in 1895, founded the Johns Hopkins Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. According to Dr. Kelly's biographer, Audrey Davis, the doctor was on a walking trip through Northern Pennsylvania one spring day when he stopped by a farm house for a drink of water.
