Do the following sentences mean the same?
•Do you mind if I open the window? •Do you mind me opening the window? •Do you mind my opening the window? |
They are all three spoken every day here in the US.
But "me opening" is regarded as substandard.
Do you mind if I open the window? Polite and normal.
Do you mind my opening the window? Polite, educated.
Do you mind me opening the window? Polite, uneducated or partially educated.
“would you mind -ing" vs "would you mind if" |
Would you mind opening the window? - it's a request
Would you mind if I open the window? - it's asking for permission
Would you mind if I smoke? - it's asking for permission to smoke.
Would you mind not smoking? 담배 좀 안 피울 수 없을까요?
- it's asking sb to stop smoking; or not to start doing it when we see sb is going to do it
