unless vs if ~not
※ unless는 if ~not의 뜻을 지니고 있지만 except if(~을 제외하고) 뜻으로 더 많이 쓴다.
if는 조건적 의미가 강하고, unless는 제외의 의미가 강하다.
unless를 그냥 if ~not 뜻으로만 해석을 하면 어색한 경우가 많다.
■unless = if ~ not
You can’t go to university if you don’t finish high school.
= unless you
You can’t enter the club if you don’t have ID.
= unless you
■unless = except if : 이것만 제외하면/뺀다면
I am going to the party unless you’re going. 네가 가면 나 파타에 가지 않겠다.
= except if (네가 가지 않으면 나 파티에 갈 거야. △)
I will work late unless you work for me. 네가 나 대신 일하면 늦게까지 일하지 않겠다.
= except if (나 대신 일하지 않으면 난 늦게 일하겠다. △)
Come tomorrow unless I phone. 내가 전화하면 오지마.
= Come tomorrow except if I phone.
※ We will go to the beach tomorrow unless it rains.
=> If it rains and then we won’t go to the beach tomorrow.
=> We will go to the beach tomorrow if it doesn’t rain.
■ unless : ~이 아니면
A : Oh, today we had a good time.
B : I guess this is it.
A : Yeah, unless you wanna come inside.
A : 오, 오늘 정말 즐거웠어.
B : 이것으로 끝이야.
A : 아 그래, 네가 들어오면 되잖아.
Have a cup of tea—unless you’d prefer a cold drink?
차 한 잔 해. 아니면 찬 음료로 하겠니?
■unless : 장차 발생하거나, 사실이 될 수 있는 일에 대해 말할 때 쓴다.
if ~ not : 자기가 알기로 아직 발생하지 않았거나 사실이 아닌 일에 쓴다.
I sleep with the window open unless it’s really cold.
나는 날씨가 정말 추울 때 외에는 창문을 열어 놓고 잠을 잔다.
If you weren’t always in such a hurry, your work would be much better.
네가 늘 그렇게 서두르지 않는다면 당신의 작업이 훨씬 더 나을 거예요.
