each other vs one another
1. 일반적으로 2명일 때(each other), 3명 이상일 때(one another) 구분 하지만 현대 영어에서는 거의 같은 의미로 사용되기 때문에 거의 차이가 없이 사용한다. 다만 each other가 one another보다 더 일반적으로 많이 사용 된다.
∙They like each other(one another).
∙They all know one another.
2. each other, one another를 부사로 잘못 이해할 수 있는데(서로 서로로 번역되므로), 대명사이므로 전치사 등과 함께 사용한다.
∙We're talking each other. (X)
∙We're talking to each other. (O)
3. each other/one another는 복수형태로는 절대 사용하지 않는다.
∙They helped each others/one anothers. (X)
4. each other나 one another를 사용해야 하는 곳에 us나 ourselves를 사용하지 않는다.
∙We’ve known each other/one another for twelve years. (O)
∙We’ve known us for twelve years. (X)
∙We’ve known ourselves for twelve years. (X)
5. 소유격을 표현할 때는 아래와 같이 사용한다.
∙They helped to look after each other’s children.
∙We often stayed in one another’s houses.
