breath vs breathing
■ breath : the air you take into your lungs and let out again when you breathe.
(호흡을 할 때 폐에 들어오고 다시 나가는 공기)
■ breathing : Takes place in lungs and surrounding air. (허파에서 하는 호흡)
- the bodily process of inhalation and exhalation; the process of taking in oxygen from inhaled air and releasing carbon dioxide by exhalation. (신체적 흡입 및 호흡 과정; 흡입 된 공기에서 산소를 흡입하고 호기에 의해 이산화탄소를 방출하는 과정)
■ respiraton : Takes place in the cells of the body tissues.(세포에서 하는 호흡)
artificial respiration : 인공호흡
breath는 "들숨과 날숨의 숨(air)" 자체를 말하고, Breathing은 숨 쉬는 행위, 즉 호흡(respiration)을 말합니다.
물론 breath에도 "숨" 외에 "호흡"이란 뜻도 있습니다. breath를 호흡이란 뜻으로 썼다고 해서 틀리지는 않겠지만, breathing이 breath보다 "호흡"이란 뜻이 더 분명하다고 보면 됩니다.
단어의 형태를 봐도 breath는 명사 자체이고, breathing은 동사 breathe에 ing가 붙어 명사가 된 경우임을 알 수 있습니다. 대개 이런 경우 동작이나 행위를 뜻 한다. 비슷한 단어로 help는 도움이고 helping은 돕는 행위을 나타냅니다.
예) hold your breath : 숨을 참아라. (딸꾹질 할 때)
Don't blow your breath on my face. 네 입김을 내 얼굴에 불지 마세요.
stop breathing : 호흡을 멈추다. 죽다.
