만일 여호와를 섬기는 것이 너희에게 좋지 않게 보이거든 너희 조상들이 강 저쪽에서 섬기던 신들이든지

또는 너희가 거주하는 땅에 있는 아모리 족속의 신들이든지 너희가 섬길 자를 오늘 택하라

작사 : 찰스 S. 로빈슨(Charles Seymour Robinson, 1829～1899). 

Robinson was ed­u­cat­ed at Will­iams Coll­ege, stu­died the­ol­o­gy for a year at Un­ion Sem­in­a­ry in New York Ci­ty, and fin­ished his course at Prince­ton, New Jer­sey. He was or­dained to the min­i­stry Ap­ril 19, 1855, and be­came pas­tor of the Park Pres­by­ter­i­an Church in Troy, New York. In 1860 he was called to the First Pres­by­ter­i­an Church in Brook­lyn, New York, where he stayed un­til 1868. At that time he be­came min­is­ter of the Amer­i­can Cha­pel in Par­is, France. Re­turn­ing to Amer­i­ca in 1870, he be­came pas­tor at the Mad­i­son Av­e­nue Pres­by­ter­i­an Church in New York Ci­ty. He stayed there 17 years, re­sign­ing in 1887 go to in­to lit­er­a­ry work. He be­came ed­it­or of The Christ­ian Week­ly in 1877, and of Ev­ery Thurs­day in 1890. He then re­turned to pas­tor­al work at the Thir­teenth Street Pres­by­ter­ian Church in New York Ci­ty, where he re­mained un­til 1892, when he moved to the New York Pres­by­ter­i­an Church.

작곡 :피터 필립 빌흔 (Peter Philip Bilhorn, 1865～1936) 미국 일리노이 주 태생의 복음 성가 가수이며 찬송 작가. 그는 G. 스테븐스가 인도하는 영적 집회에서 회심하여 복음 전도 사역에 헌신하였을 뿐만 아니라 통산 2,000여편에 달하는 찬송가를 남겼다.

Bilhorn’s fam­i­ly name was orig­in­al­ly Pul­horn; it was changed by a judge in Ot­ta­wa, Il­li­nois, named Abra­ham Lin­coln. Peter and his bro­ther formed the Eu­re­ka Wa­gon and Car­riage Works in Chi­ca­go, Il­linois. Lat­er, Pe­ter be­came in­volved in Gos­pel mu­sic, stu­dy­ing un­der George Root, George Steb­bins, and others. He wrote some 2,000 Go­spel songs in his life­time, and for a while, worked with evan­gel­ist Bil­ly Sun­day. He al­so in­vent­ed a fold­ing pump or­gan used at re­viv­als in the late 19th Cen­tu­ry, and found­ed the Bil­horn Fold­ing Or­gan Com­pa­ny in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois.

One of the high points in Bil­horn’s ca­reer came in 1900, when he traveled to Lon­don. There he con­duct­ed a 4,000 strong choir in the Crys­tal Pal­ace, and Queen Vic­tor­ia in­vit­ed him to sing in Buck­ing­ham Palace.

《새찬송가, 1962》321장에 번역 처음 소개된 이 찬송은「어지신 목사」의 작사자요 권위 있는 찬송가 편찬자인 찰스 로빈슨(Charles Seymour Robinson, 1829～1899) 목사의 원작을, 피터 빌혼(Peter Philip Bilhorn, 1865～1936)이 작곡한 'Dare to Stand Like Joshua' 를 번역한 것이다.

가나안을 정복한 여호수아는 말년에 이스라엘 백성과 장로들 수령들을 세겜에 불러 모아놓고 고별설교를 한 후, 마지막으로 이렇게 선언한다.「섬길 신을 택하라. 오직 나와 내 집은 여호와를 섬기겠노라.」(수 24:15)

찬송 가사 내용은 여호수아의 고백을 후렴으로 하고 있는데, 번역을 잘못 한 것인지 일부러 새로 작곡한 것인지 내용이 아주 다르다.

존 데이비스(John A. Davis)와 존 클레멘츠(Jno. R. Clements)가 편찬하여 빌혼형제출판사(Bilhorn Brothers)에서 낸《구속의 찬양노래》'Songs of Redemption and Praise, (Revised) 1906' 74장에 실려 있다.

이 찬송 작사자는 찰스 로빈슨(Charles Seymour Robinson, 1829～1899) 목사다. 미국 버몬트주 베닝턴(Bennington, Vermont)에서 1829년에 출생하여 1899년 뉴욕시에서 세상을 떠났다. 윌리엄칼리지에서 신학을 공부한 후, 유니온신학교로 가서 1년간 공부하고, 프린스턴에서 공부를 마쳤다. 1855년에 목사 안수를 받고, 뉴욕 트로이에 있는 파크장로교회(Park Presbyterian Church)에서 목회를 시작하였다. 1860년에 브루클린에 있는 제1장로교회의 청빙을 받아 가서 9년 동안 섬겼다. 프랑스 파리에 있는 미국인교회의 청빙을 받아 프랑스로 갔다가 뉴욕 매디슨 애버뉴(Madison Avenue) 장로교회의 청빙을 받고 1870년에 미국으로 돌아와 17년간 사역한 후 사임하고 1877년부터 1890년까지《그리스도교 주간신문》'The Christian Weekly' 편집을 맡아 일하다가, 1890년에 다시 뉴욕의 13번가장로교회(Thirteenth Street Presbyterian Church)에서 2년, 그리고 뉴욕 장로교회에서 은퇴하였다. 그는 1867년, 해밀턴대학에서 신학박사, 1885년, 라파예트(Lafayette)대학에서 법학박사 학위를 받았다. 로빈슨 목사는 많은 저서를 내었는데, 찬송가만도 다음 9책에 이른다. 푸른 색으로 된 책은 필자가 구입한 책들이다.
