미국 정부가 미국 의대, 치대, 약대, 간호대에서 공부하고 미국에서 취업하려는 국제 학생들에게 H1B 비자(전문직 취업비자) 추첨에서 STEM 전공 학생들처럼 혜택을 주기로 했다.
그동안 국제학생으로 의대, 치대,약대, 간호대에서 공부한 학생들은 미국에서 취업을 하더라도 비자 제한이 있어서 매우 불리했다. 미국 정부는 "STEM Designated Degree Program List 2022"에는 의학, 치의학, 간호학 전공을 STEM으로 분류하지 않았다.
그러나, 미국 정부는 2023년 7월 12일자로 의학, 치의학, 간호를 STEM 분야로 지정하는 규정을 발표했다. 따라서, 해당 규정은 2023년 8월 1일부터 시행되고 있다.
따라서, 2023년 8월 1일 이후에 취득한 의학, 치의학, 간호 학위는 STEM 분야 학위로 인정된다. 이 과정을 이수하고 OPT비자를 통해 취업을 한 학생들은 그 이전 학생들과 달리 비자 추첨에서 STEM 전공자처럼 여러번 취업비자 추첨을 할 수 있게 됐다.
이제 한국 학생들도 취업 비자의 제한에 대한 두려움 없이 미국 의대, 치대, 약대, 간호대에 갈 수 있게 됐다. 그동안 이 분야에 가고 싶어도 취업 비자 제한에 걸려 망설이는 학생들이 많았고, 그래서 비자 추첨에 떨어진 학생들은 한국으로 돌아와 의사고시, 치의사 고시, 약사고시 등을 보고 한국에서 개업을 하는 경우가 있었다.
미국 국토안보부(DHS) 발표
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is announcing a new policy that will recognize medical, dental, and nursing degrees as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degrees for the purposes of H-1B visa eligibility. This policy change will take effect on August 1, 2023.
The new policy will make it easier for foreign nationals with these degrees to obtain H-1B visas, which allow them to work in the United States in specialty occupations that require a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field. H-1B visas are highly sought-after by foreign nationals seeking to work in the United States, and this policy change will make it more likely that foreign nationals with these degrees will be able to obtain them.
DHS is making this policy change to support the U.S. economy and to attract and retain highly skilled workers. The medical, dental, and nursing fields are all essential to the U.S. economy, and this policy change will help to ensure that the United States has access to the talent it needs to compete in the global economy.
