King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid Oil on canvas, 1883 114 1/8 x 53 1/2 inches (290 x 136 cm) Tate Gallery, London 코페투아왕과 거지소녀 신화와 전설을 토대로 낭만적인 화풍을 개척했던 19세기 영국의 화가 번 존스(Burne Jones:1833∼1898)의 1884년 유화 작품이다. 크기는 세로 293.4㎝, 가로 135.9㎝이며, 영국 테이트갤러리에 소장되어 있다. 왕 코페투아는 번 존스 자신을 모델로, 거지는 그의 아내 죠지아나(Georiana)를 모델로 하였다. 아프리카에 코페투아라는 젊은 흑인왕이 있었다. 그는 주위의 걱정을 살 정도로 여자를 멀리했었다. 그러던 어느날 우연히 순수하고 아름다운 거지소녀를 만나게 되었다. 자신의 사랑을 송두리채 바칠만한 운명이라 느꼈만 문제는 그녀가 거지라는 신분이였다. 결국 왕관을 위해 사랑을 버리느냐, 아니면 사랑을 따라가는냐, 하는 선택의 순간이 왔다. 그녀를 바라보는 그의 손에는 지금 그가 버려야할 왕관이 들려있다. 왕도 여인 앞에선 한 사람의 남자일 뿐이였다. 그는 결국 사랑을 선택하고만다. 이 이야기는 테니슨이 민요를 토대로 지은 <거지소녀>라는 시의 내용이다. A Song of a Beggar and a King Alfred Tennyson 왕이여 무릎꿇지 마소서 소녀는 낮은자입니다 저 같은 이에게 베풀지 마소서 그대의 마음을 주지 마소서 가진것 없는자는 욕심이 많음이니 더이상 어리석은 생각을 하기전에 왕이여 제발 그 몸을 펴소서 그대가 가진것이 없다고 누가 그랬소이까 내눈에 그대는 황금보다 귀한 꽃이오 내 손의 왕관보다 무거운 마음이오 그대가 가진것이 없기에 오히려 기쁘오 온전히 나로써 그대를 채울수 있으니 말이오
