신년사
오는 새해에는 법우님들 께서5초 동안 불법이 흥성하고 윤회계에 지속되기를 기원하셨으면 합니다. 그저 이를 원하는 것 혹은 소망하는 것으로 충분합니다. 여러분들에게 등을 밝히거나 향을 사르거나 합장하거나 진언을 하거나 앉아서 명상하라고 부탁드리는 것이 아닙니다. 비록 짧더라도 많은 분들이 진정으로 불법이 흥성하고 지속되기를 소망하시기를 바랍니다. 그러한 간절하고 명확한 소망이 불법이 번영하고, 지속되고 굳건해지는데 핵심이 된다고 봅니다.
왜냐하면 진정한 고난은, 부처님께서 보살이셨을 때 너무나 많은 어려움을 이미 견디셨고 극복하셨기 때문입니다. 수 없이 많이, 이 보살께서는 당신의 행복을 희생하셨고 미래에 불법의 번영을 위해, 당신 고행의 힘을 회향 하셨습니다.
보살께서는 병약한 이들에게 당신의 음식을 주셨습니다. 보리심(에 대한) 한마디를 위해 당신의 자식, 반려자, 재산을 보시하였습니다. 진리 한 마디를 듣고자 고행을 받아들였고, 진리를 설하는 이, 수행자, 아라한들께 예경하고, 공경하며 공양을 올려드렸습니다.
바다 같은 (광대한) 겁 동안 모든 이들의 깨달음을 위해 보살께서는 진리를 찾는데 일생을 바쳤습니다. 그 결과를 성취하고자 듣고, 배우며, 수행하고 시방의 부처님께 공양올리는 것을 결코 멈추지 않았습니다.
보살께서는 그의 자비로 인하여 본인의 가장 소중한 살과 뼈, 팔다리와 몸의 여러 곳을 내놓았습니다. 보살께서는 이 모든 자량의 힘으로 불법이 흥성하고 오래 머물기를 발원하셨습니다.
보살께서는 일체 중생들을 삼승(三乘)으로 이끌고 모두에게 당신의 완전한 법시(법보시)를 주고자, 이 모든 고행을 인내하셨던 것입니다. 보살께서는 유정들을 번뇌의 화염으로부터 구하기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 것을 하셨으며, 불선업을 이기고 공덕의 풍요로운 환희를 누릴 수 있게 도와주려고 노력하셨습니다. 그리고 보살께서는 그릇된 견해의 감옥으로부터 유정들을 구하기 위해 힘 닿는 한 노력을 기울이고 올바른 견해의 바른 방향으로 이끌기 위해 애쓰셨습니다. 불법이 흥성하지 않으리라는 생각은 추호도 하지 않으셨습니다.
불법이 흥성하고 지속되는 것의 핵심은 오직 우리가 불법을 원하는 것에 달려 있습니다. 도반 여러분 다시 한 번 말씀 드립니다. 2016년을 시작하면서 몇 초만이라도 그저 부처님의 가르침이 번영하고 계속되기를 소망하시길 권청 드립니다. 우리가 화합과 평화, 번영을 소망한다면 석가모니께서는 반드시 편재하실 것입니다.
New Year’s Message
In this coming new year I would like to request all my friends to spend five seconds really wanting the buddhadharma to flourish and remain in this samsara. Just simply wanting or wishing this will do. I am not even asking you to light a lamp, burn incense, fold your palms, chant a mantra, or sit and meditate. Just a sincere and clear wish, however short, from a lot of us truly wanting the buddhadharma to flourish and remain, will be the key to its flourishing, longevity, and strengthening.
This is because the real hardship was borne and accomplished by the Buddha himself who endured so much difficulty in his bodhisattva days. So often the bodhisattva forsook his own happiness to dedicate the power of his actions to the flourishing of his own dharma in the future.
For the ailing, the bodhisattva forsook his own sustenance. For one word of bodhicitta, the bodhisattva gave his own child, spouse and wealth. To hear one single word of truth, the bodhisattva undertook penance and paid homage, venerated and made offerings to truth tellers, renunciants, and arhats.
For ocean-like aeons, for the sake of the enlightenment of all, the bodhisattva dedicated his life to searching for the truth. To that end he never stopped hearing, learning, disciplining himself, and making offerings to the buddhas of the ten directions.
Out of his compassion the bodhisattva gave his most cherished flesh, bone, and blood, his limbs and body parts. By the power of all his merit, the bodhisattva aspired that the dharma will flourish and remain.
The bodhisattva went through such hardships to lead all beings through the three vehicles and to give them the dharma through his perfect generosity. He engaged in every possible action to rescue beings from the fires of emotion and to help them win victory over non-virtue and enjoy the wealth of virtue. And the bodhisattva put his utmost effort into rescuing beings from the dungeon of wrong views and to lead them in the right direction to the right view. There was never an ounce of doubt that the dharma will not flourish.
The key to ensuring the dharma will now flourish and remain depends only on our mere wanting of the dharma. So once again, dear friends, I urge you to begin 2016 with just a few seconds of simply wanting the dharma to flourish and remain. If we wish for harmony, peace and prosperity, Shakyamuni must prevail.
