에디허 국제 주니어 대회 (그룹 1) 18세부 예선을 2명의 한국선수가 통과했다. 전날 1번시드를 이긴 김형권(84년생, 미국 사라소타 거주)은 결승에서 Alvaredo(12번시드, CRC)를 60, 64 로 유다니엘(85년생, 미국 마이아미 거주)은 Gil Parra(BOL)을 63, 60 으로 누르고 당당히 본선에 들어갔다.
1번시드를 이겨 매스컴의 화제가 되고 있는 김형권선수에 대하여 STA가 미국 사라소타의 김형권부친과 직접 전화 인터뷰를 가졌으며 다음은 전화 인터뷰 내용.
"김형권은 유고출신 카나다 최고의 주니어 스타이며 미국 IMG(닉볼리티에르 아카데미)와 계약선수인 Cvetkovic (1번시드)와의 대결에서 57, 25 의 상황에서 집에 가려고 짐을 꾸리고 있었습니다. 이후 김형권은 무서운 투혼으로 살아났으며, 이것은 한국적 끈기와 강인한 정신력의 승리였습니다. 2세트를 76 으로 뒤짚은것은 기적에 가까운 일. 이 경기를 이김으로써 매스컴의 집중 관심을 끌기 시작 했습니다. 로칼신문(sarasotaherald.com)들과 주니어웹사이트(juniortennis.com)와 인터뷰를 했습니다. 에이전트가 계약등을 새로 하자고 조르고 있으며, 닉볼리티에르도 오늘 하루 종일 김형권선수의 결승장면을 구경하는 모습을 보였습니다. 내년에는 꼭 한국에 가고 싶습니다. 청주 휴처스에 가서 알렉스킴 처럼 한국 팬들을 만나고 싶습니다. 함께 경기를 하고 있는 한국선수 유다니엘도 오늘 함께 예선을 통과했습니다. 축하하고 싶습니다."
김형권은 11년전 7세때 테니스를 위해 미국으로 건너가 당시 화제가 되었던 선수이다. 테니스 하나만을 위해 전 가족이 미국으로 이민간 김형권..이제 그는 서서히 수면위로 부상하고 있다.

Eddie Herr Championships Kim gets help in upset win

BRADENTON – Kim Hyung-Kwon was not alone in his quest to upset the top seed in the boys-18 qualifying tournament.
Kim fed off the boisterous cheers from family and friends at the Bollettieri campus of the IMG Academies Saturday afternoon to beat the No. 1 seed, Dejan Cvetkovic, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
The Sarasota resident needs one more win to qualify for the main draw of the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships, which begins Monday.
Cvetkovic was not the only one of the higher-seeded players to fall Saturday. The No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, Nicholas Spinnaze and Juan Sebastian Linde, fell in the boys-14 qualifying. The No. 2 seed in the girls 16, Tatianna Fernandez-Botero, was also eliminated.
Cvetkovic was one game away from advancing with a 5-2 lead in the second set after taking the first. Kim battled back to take that set and led 3-0 in the third. Cvetkovic regrouped to even the set at three-all, but Kim was not to be denied.
"The atmosphere is great here," Kim said. "I am from here and I had a lot of people rooting for me. It was a great help."
A native of South Korea, Kim moved to Sarasota 11 years ago and trains at the Celsius Tennis Academy at the Bath and Racquet Club.
Kim's tennis life was shut down for a while after knee surgery two years ago. He didn't play any tournaments for two years while he was in rehab and was totally off the courts for a year.
The long layoff gave Kim realistic expectations heading into the weekend. Kim knew a victory Friday would put him up against the top-seed that had been tournament tested. He is slated to appear at the Winter Super Nationals at the end of December.
"All I expected was to win one match at a time," Kim said. "I just wanted to see how I progressed."
Now he is only looking at today's match against David Avarado Vargas with his supporters in place to help lead him again.
Qualifying for the main draw concludes today for the 14-, 16- and 18-age divisions. The main draw of the 12s will continue today, with the finals slated for Thursday.
The tournament opening ceremonies will also be held today at the Academy. The "Parade of Nations" is at 4.
