주간묵상 26-25
<고목나무>
팔순을 넘으며
고목나무를 바라본다.
비록 열매는 다했어도
한때 푸른 잎을 흔들며
모진비바람 맞으며
엄동설한 견디며
새들의 보금자리와
풍성한 열매를 내어주고
세월이 흐르자
굵은 가지는 말라가고
껍질은 벗겨지고
허리가 휘어지며
앙상한 가지에
열매는 온데간데없다.
사람들은 이제
“쓸모없다”고 말하겠지
그러나 고목나무의 생은
거기서 끝나지 않는 것
어떤 것은 좋은 목재가 되어
아름다운 집을 짓고
가정의 기둥이 되기도
화목이 되어 자신을 태워
나그네의 모닥불이 되기도 한다.
어떤 것은 완전히 썩어
흙으로 돌아가
새로운 생명을 키우는
거름이 되기도 한다.
생각해 보면
고목나무도 마지막까지
버려질 것이 없다.
하물며
우리의 노년도
그러해야 하지 않을까.
젊은 날의
열정과 힘은 쇠하였어도
지혜의 깊이는 더해지고
기도의 향기는 짙어지고
말 한마디에도
천금의 지혜가 담기고
누군가는
지혜의 목재가 되어
다음 세대를 세우고,
누군가는 희생의 장작이 되어
이웃을 따뜻하게 하고,
누군가는 자신을 낮추어
조용히 썩는 거름이 되어
누군가의 영혼을 살리는
작은 밀알이 되기도
세상은
노인의 가치를 모를지라도
혹 자식마저 외면할지 몰라도
하나님은 마지막까지
한 생명을 귀하게 여기신다.
고목나무는 늙어서도
여전히 사명이 있듯
믿음의 사람은
연륜이 더할수록 더욱 귀하다.
“의인은 늙어도 결실하며 진액이 풍족하고 빛이 청청하니”(시편 92:14)
"늙은 자에게는 지혜가 있고 장수하는 자에게는 명철이 있느니라"(욥 12:12)
"백발은 영화의 면류관이라 공의로운 길에서 얻으리라" (잠 16:31)

<The Old Tree>
Having passed my eightieth year,
I look upon an old tree.
Though it no longer bears fruit,
once it waved its green leaves,
enduring fierce storms,
surviving bitter winters,
offering shelter to the birds
and abundant fruit to many.
As time passed,
its thick branches withered,
its bark peeled away,
its trunk bent with age,
and on its gaunt limbs
no fruit could be found.
Now people may say,
“It is useless.”
Yet the life of an old tree
does not end there.
Some become fine timber,
building beautiful homes
and serving as pillars for families.
Some become firewood,
burning themselves
to warm the traveler’s fire.
Some completely decay,
returning to the soil,
becoming fertilizer
that nourishes new life.
When I think about it,
even an old tree
is never wasted until the very end.
How much more, then,
should our old age
be so as well?
Though the passion
and strength of youth may fade,
the depth of wisdom grows richer,
the fragrance of prayer becomes deeper,
and even a single word
carries wisdom beyond price.
Some become timber of wisdom,
raising up the next generation.
Some become firewood of sacrifice,
bringing warmth to their neighbors.
Some humble themselves,
quietly becoming decayed compost,
and like a small grain of wheat,
bring life to another soul.
Though the world
may fail to see the value of the elderly,
and even children may turn away,
God treasures every life
to the very end.
Just as an old tree
still has its purpose even in age,
so a person of faith
becomes more precious
with the passing years.
“The righteous shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing.”(Psalm 92:14)
“With the aged is wisdom, and in length of days understanding.”(Job 12:12)
“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.”(Proverbs 16:31)
