뉴질랜드 티마루, South Canterbury의 액티비티들

뉴질랜드에 사시는 교민분들이나, 한국분이라도, 뉴질랜드에서 가장 큰 도시인 오클랜드나, 크라이스트처치, 웰링턴정도를 

알고 계시는분들은 많지만, '티마루'라고 하면, 과연 티마루가 어디야 부터 시작해서, 과연 한국사람들이 살기나 하는 

지역인가라는 질문에서, 유학이라던지, 교육에 관심이 있으신 분들은 좋은 학교는 있는지에 대한 질문을 가지신 분들이 

있기도 하겠습니다. 제가 살아가고 있는 티마루에서 대해서 어느정도 관심이 있으신분들은, 티마루가 얼마나 작은곳인지, 

또한 문화를 즐길수 있는 환경이나, 다른 여러가지 편의 사항을 누릴수 있는지에 대해서 궁금해 하시는 분들이 있는것도 

상담전화를 받아보거나, 이메일을 통해서 흔히 받게 되는 질문내용들이도 합니다. 

위키피디아에서는 티마루에 대한 소개를 다음과 같이 하고 있습니다. 

티마루는 뉴질랜드 남섬 동해안 캔터베리 지방의 주요 항구 도시로, 크라이스트처치에서는 160km, 남섬 태평양 동해안에 위치한 더니든 북쪽으로 200km 떨어진 곳에 위치하고 있다. 티마루에는 2006년 인구조사를 기준으로 42,867명이 사는 자치구이며, 이전 티마루 타운 주변에는 27,200명이 살고 있고 플레즌트 포인트(1,170), 테무카(4,044), 제럴딘(2,244)과 같은 작은 시골 사회와 연결된 번영하는 농업배후지지가 되는 곳이다. 와이메티 타운은 오마루와 더니든까지 남쪽 길로 약 40km 떨어진 곳에 위치하고 있다. 캐롤라인 베이는 인기있는 여가지로 티마루 타운의 중심가 가까운 곳에 위치하고 있고, 항구 시설 북쪽에 위치하고 있다. 캐롤라인 베이을 넘어, 워시다이크 산업 교외지가 맥캔지 컨트리로 가는 주요 노선인 8번 국도 교차점에 위치하고 있다. 이곳은 페어라이, 트위젤, 테카포 호수, 아오라키 마운트 쿡 그리고 퀸즈타운과 연결되어 있다.

티마루는 수천년에 마지막으로 분화된 휴화산 호러블 화산의 용암로를 따라 만들어진 언덕 위해 건설되었다. 결과적으로 대부분의 중심가가 위치하여, 북쪽의 캔터베리 평원의 밋밋한 풍경과는 확연한 대조를 이룬다. 이 화산 바위는 이 지방의 청회색 건물을 건설하는데 사용되고 있다.

뉴질랜드 남섬의 조용한 도시 티마루는....

뉴질랜드가 다민족으로 이루어진 국가라고는 하지만, 뉴질랜드 북섬과 남섬은 상당히 다른 양상을 보이고 있는것이 사실입니다. 

잘 아시는것처럼 오클랜드등의 큰 도시들로 이루어진 북섬의 대부분의 도시들은 아시안의 인구, 마오리등을 비롯한 사모아, 

통아 등의 폴리네시안의 인구들이 집중이 되어 있습니다. 이와 반대로, 남섬은 밑으로 가면 갈수록, 아시안의 인구가 

상당히 적을수 밖에 없는 유럽인들의 이주로 이루어진 곳이 남섬의 도시들인것 같습니다. 

티마루는 뉴질랜드의 전형적인 중소도시처럼 번잡하지 않고, 조용하게 지낼수 있는곳입니다. 전형적인 중소도시이긴하지만, 

여러 문화생활이나, 생활에 불편을 주는것은 없을정도로 도시자체로 산업이 돌아가고 있는곳이기도 합니다. 

혹시라도 소도시라고 하면, 인프라나 혹은 문화적인 혜택을 받지 못할 것으로 오해하고 계신 분들도 있겠지만, 

한국의 소도시(혹은 시골)과는 전혀 다른 의미의 도시라고 해야하겠습니다. 

큰 슈퍼마켓체인(파크앤세이브, 카운트다운, 뉴월드, 4square등)은 다 들어와 있으며, 당연하게 Warehouse,

영화관, 극장, play센터, 도서관, 새로 개장을 한 Cbay 수영장부터 시작해서, 사우스 켄터베리 박물관, 여러개의 아트갤러리, 

SBS centre라는 다목적 체육경기장까지 있습니다. 학교의 수만 보더라도, 티마루의 초등학교(1-8학년)는 10개, 티마루 시내의 

고등학교의 수는 5개, South Canterbury 지역까지 한다면, 10개가 넘겠구요. 뿐만 아니라, 아오라키 폴리텍(전문대학)도

있습니다. 초등학교의 경우에는 유학생을 받을수 있는 학교가 단 3개밖에 없지만, 모든 고등학교(한국 중2 부터)는 

유학생을 받을수 있는 code of practice 를 가지고 있습니다. 

티마루는 커뮤니티적 요소를 상당히 많이 가진 도시입니다. 속된말로 하자면 뜨내기들이 거의 없는 도시라고 해야겠죠. 

저희 집에서 유학원사무실로, 아이들 과외수업때문에, 아이들 픽업을 갈때, 마주치게 되는 사람들중, 여러 사람들에게

서로 손인사를 할정도로 아는 사람이 있는, 대도시와는 사뭇 다른 풍경을 나타내기도 하구요. 

모르는 사람들과 이야기를 하다보면, 한다리나 두다리 건너서는 거의 모든 사람들을 알수 있는 어찌보면, 정서상으로는

한국의 시골적인 마인드를 가지고 있는 곳이 이곳 티마루가 아닌가 합니다. 

티마루에서 유학을 하시면서 할수있는것들은 상당히 많습니다. 한국에서 쉽게 할수 있는 쇼핑을 제외한다면, 

자연환경안에서 할수 있는 엑티비티들이 상당히 많은곳이 티마루라고 하겠습니다. 천천히 산책할수 있는 코스들에서부터

마운틴 바이크, 골프, 수상스포츠, Horse riding, 낚시, 거의 모든 종류의 스포츠들, 티마루 공항에서의 경비행기 조종까지 

마음만 먹는다면, 티마루에서의 엑티비티로 뉴질랜드의 아름다운 자연을 즐길수 있는 환경적 요소를 가지고 있습니다. 

마지막으로 뉴질랜드의 중소도시인 티마루가 유학지로서 좋은 이유는, 그 무엇보다는 공교육이 탄탄한 뉴질랜드 교육시스템에서 

경쟁의 구도의 환경에서 살아남아야하는 아이들에게 어느정도 숨통을 튀어줄수 있는 대안이 될수 있다는 부분입니다. 

뉴질랜드 티마루에서 유학을 하는 아이들이 한국에서 생활하던것과 똑같이 밤늦게까지 학원다니면서, 여기저기 치이면서 

하루하루를 보내는것이 아니라, 뉴질랜드 문화에 빠질수 있다는 점이 중요한 점입니다. 유학을 보내시면서, 

영어에 대한 중요성뿐만 아니라, 동양적 사고, 한국식 사고에서 벗어나 여러 문화를 체험한아이들이 성장을 해서 

세계적인 문화에서 좀더 활달하게 활동을 할 수 있다는 것 자체가 타 문화에 대한이해력을 가지고 있다는 이야기인데, 

뉴질랜드가 유럽 특히나 영국이민자들로 이루어진 나라인 만큼 앞으로 초중고등학교를 마치고, 세계로 나아갈수 있는 

문화적 다양성을 가진 아이로 자라나게 할수 있는것이 이곳 뉴질랜드 중소도시 티마루에서 공부하면서 자연스럽게 

과정으로 얻게 되는 중요한 결과물이라고 하겠습니다. 

이런 것들이 가능한 이유로는 이곳 뉴질랜드 중소도시인 티마루가 유학생이 많이 붐비는 도시가 아니라는 점입니다. 

유학생들이 갈수 있는 초등학교에는 전교생대비 3명에서 5명, 한반에는 유학생한명만 들어갈수 있는 환경이구요. 

중고등학교 역시 한학교당 한국인 유학생이 없는 학교도 있구요. 일반적으로 5명정도의 학생이 있기때문에,

유학환경을 몰입을 할수 밖에 없겠죠. 조기유학지로서 뉴질랜드 중소도시의 큰 장점은 가정생활을 가장 중시하는 

뉴질랜드 문화와 더불어, 아이들이 늦게까지 헤매고 다닐 몰(mall)이나 상점들이 없기때문이겠죠. 

깨끗한 자연환경은 뉴질랜드 교육이 줄 수 있는 하나의 보너스로서 티마루, 특히나, 깨끗하고 번잡하지 않은

뉴질랜드 생활은 뉴질랜드 교육을 택함으로서 얻을 수 있는 보너스라는 부분에는 학부모님들께서 항상 동의하는 

부분이기도 합니다

South Canterbury 에서 가장 큰 도시인 티마루를 제외하고서라도, 20분에서 1시간정도의 거리면 전형적인 뉴질랜드의 아름다움을즐길수 있는 도시들이 있습니다. 티마루, 제럴딘, 테카포호수, 플레즌트 포인트, 와이메티등, 뉴질랜드를 여행하는 한국관광책자에는 

실리지 않았지만, 현지사람들이 즐기는 곳이 아마도 이런 자그마한 소도시들이 아닐까 하네요.

Geraldine(제럴딘)

1)	Enjoy relaxed shopping for quality New Zealand made clothing, merino wear and souvenirs. Locally made arts and crafts including jewellery, woodwork & hand knitted garments are available also from a number of delightful gift shops.
2)	Friendly Cafés, Wineries and Craft Beers including handmade chocolates, Talbot Forest Cheeses, award winning cheeses and of course the famous “Barker’s of Geraldine” fruit products and preserves. Find these gourmet delights at The Four Peaks Plaza. Try Elderflower beverages, virgin flaxseed oil and locally produced organic yoghurt. Visit The Brewery Café, where seven types of beer are brewed in the beautiful Gapes Valley or Opihi Winery, only a 25 minute drive south of Geraldine.
3)	Visit beautiful Peel Forest, Located in the stunning Rangitata Valley, with Rangitata Rafts offering some of NZ’s best white-water rafting; experience kayaking, walking and mountain biking experiences with Alps2Ocean.  Horse riding can also be enjoyed with Peel Forest Lodge & Horse Trekking; local operators can provide you with access to areas not normally accessible to the public.
4)	Dust the cobwebs off the golf clubs. There are two golf courses within minutes of Geraldine. Rally the troops and enjoy a great afternoon out with the family, play the new Mini Golf Course at Café Mes Amis in Orari, a quick 5 minute drive from Geraldine. The course is great fun with cut-out horses, cows, a milking shed and even railway lines!
5)	Watch a movie at the Historic Geraldine Cinema.  If you time it right, you might be even able to experience a live music concert.  Relax in the comfy couches and enjoy the latest blockbuster to arthouse movies. In the interval, buy an icecream or some jaffas, especially if you are sitting upstairs!
6)	Visit Talbot Forest, an easy walk from the village.  This is an excellent example of a rare remnant of lowland podocarp hardwood native forest – enjoy any of four easy shady walks.  Within the reserve there are a couple of areas where you can park the car, so take a picnic lunch and enjoy the views. If you want to visit local gardens, summer is the best time and you are in for a treat.  Before you travel, email or phone the Geraldine Visitor Centre on 03 693 1006 and we will advise which gardens are open to view.
7)	View the fascinating ‘Medieval Mosiac‘ and see the re-creation of the Bayeux Tapestry, completed after 25 years of work and research.  As well as enjoying this incredible replica, try your hand at puzzles to tease your mind and view The World’s Largest Jersey, recognised in The Guiness Book of Records.
8)	Galleries, check out the local art galleries and take a new piece of art home.  There are several very talented artists living in the South Canterbury area. Visit the McAtamney Gallery or The Cottage Pantry to see their latest art exhibition
9)	Take a scenic flight with Air Rangitata, based north of Geraldine and just a 15 minute drive away. Visit the Rangitata Areodrome and see the Heritage Museum collection of aviation memorabilia and view the microlights housed there.
10)	Museums Visit the Geraldine historic Museum and learn about the early days in the area. The impressive collection at the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum is also a must-see - over 1400 exhibits on display, including the only surviving 1929 Spartan biplane in the world and over 100 tractors, one of them the oldest working tractor in New Zealand. Nearby is Geraldine's Lace Museum, featuring a large private collection of antique lace and also thread, weaving, spinning and sewing items.

Lake Tekapo (테카포호수)
