  중학교 시험부터 등장하는 '참견하다, 끼어들다'에 대한 문제에 대해 종합적으로 정리해서 알려주는 분이 없어 보인다. 아래의 표현들을 익히며 차이점들을 느껴보시길.



  가장 대표적인 것이 'cut in'이다.


cut in

to join a conversation suddenly 갑자기 대화에 끼어들다 :  interrupt
We were trying to have a conversation, but she kept cutting in. What are you guys talking about? he cut in.흔히 + on He's always cutting in on our conversations.

 to do or say (something) by making an effort 애를 써서 (뭔가)를 하거나 말하다

chip in

1 chip in or chip in (something) :  to give something (such as money) to help a person, group, or cause 사람·집단·대의에 보탬이 되게 (돈 같은) 어떤 것을 내놓다
We all chipped in [=contributed] to buy him a gift. If we all chip in [=help (out)], the work will get done quickly. We each chipped in 10 dollars.
2 chiefly Brit :  to add your comment or opinion to a conversation or discussion 대화나 토론에 자신의 의견이나 생각을 덧붙이다 (~을 들먹이며 대화에) 끼어들다[합류하다] 
He left hours ago, Sue chipped in. [=chimed in]


Pete and Anne chipped in with suggestions.

chime in

 to add your comment or opinion to a conversation or discussion that you have been listening to 대화나 토론을 듣고 있다가 자신의 의견이나 생각을 덧붙이다 노래에 끼어들다
He kept chiming in with his opinions. He left hours ago, Janet chimed in.

  • break in

    She longed to break in on their conversation but didn't want to appear rude.

    그녀는 그들의 대화에 끼어들고 싶은 마음이 간절했지만 무례하게 보이고 싶지는 않았다.







    horn in
    [phrasal verb] US, informal + usually disapproving :  to add your comment or opinion to a conversation or discussion that you have been listening to 남의 대화나 논의를 듣고 있다가 자신의 견해·의견을 덧붙이다 <<참견하다, 끼어들다>>
    Whenever I start to talk, he always horns in.대개 + on He always horns in on the conversation.

    poke into


     poke/poke+[전치사]+[명사]/poke+[부사] 쓸데없이 간섭하다, 말참견하다, […] 꼬치꼬치 캐다, 파고 들다[into ‥]; 찾아다니다[around, about]

    • poke into other people's business                      

      말참견하다[쓸데없이 나서다].

      남의 일에 쓸데없이 참견하다

    step in 

    :  to become involved in an activity, discussion, etc., in order to prevent trouble or provide help 말썽을 막거나 도움을 주기 위해 어떤 활동, 논의 등에 관여하다 <<개입하다>>
    He stepped in and took charge. She stepped in before a fight could start.

    To intrude; interfere: messing in the neighbors' affairs.

    2barge verb

    barg·es; barged; barg·ing 항상 뒤에 부사 또는 전치사가 나옴

    [no obj] :  to move or push in a fast, awkward, and often rude way 빨리 막무가내로 (흔히 무례하게) 나아가거나 밀고 들어오다[들어가다]
    He came rushing down the stairs, barging into the crowd of people at the bottom. She barged through the door without even knocking. What makes him think he can barge in here [=enter suddenly and rudely] like that?

    barge in on (something or someone) :  to suddenly and rudely interrupt or disturb (something or someone) …을 갑작스럽고 무례하게 가로막다·방해하다

    butt in
    [phrasal verb] informal :  to get involved in something (such as a conversation or someone else's activities) especially in a rude way (대화나 다른 사람의 활동 같은) 어떤 것에 참견하다(특히 무례하게) <<끼어들다, 간섭하다>> (대화 중에) 불쑥 끼어들다 
    I realize you're trying to help, but I wish you wouldn't butt in. You're only making things worse. Sorry to butt in (on you) like this, but I need to ask you a question.

    butt out

    muscle in 

    :  to use force or influence in a way that is wrong or unwanted in order to become involved in something for selfish reasons 이기적인 이유로 어떤 일에 끼어들기 위해 그릇되거나 바람직하지 않은 방법으로 힘·영향력을 행사하다 <<힘을 써서 끼어들다>>대개 + on His competitors have tried to muscle in on his business.

     informal :  to give your opinion about something 어떤 일에 대해 의견을 제시하다
