한국의 일부 여성혐오적인 온라인 문화에서는 퐁퐁맨이라는 용어가 등장했다. "퐁퐁"은 설거지할 때 사용하는 세제를 의미하는데, 이 단어는 비유적으로 ‘남이 사용한 것을 정리하는’ 의미를 담고 있다. 그러나 그 기원은 매우 불쾌하고 폭력적이다. 여기서 '설거지'는 여성을 집단 성폭행할 때, 마지막에 성폭행하는 행위를 뜻한다. 따라서 퐁퐁맨은 남들이 성적으로 ‘사용한’ 여성을 마지막에 '정리하는' 남성, 즉 성관계를 맺은 경험이 있는 여성과 결혼하거나 관계를 맺는 남성을 경멸적으로 지칭하는 표현이다.
이 용어는 온라인에서 여성의 가치를 과거 성적 경험에 따라 판단하고, 여성을 물건처럼 취급하며, 그런 사고방식을 거부하는 남성을 비난하는 심각한 여성혐오를 반영한다. 이러한 표현은 여성에 대한 고정관념을 강화할 뿐만 아니라, 여성의 비인간화와 대상화를 정상화한다.
현재 네이버 웹툰에서는 <2024 지상최대 공모전>이 열리고 있습니다. 여기에 "이세계 퐁퐁남"이라는 작품이 있어 논란이 발생하고 있습니다. 사회비판적인 내용이 아니라 특정 성별에 대한 인식을 왜곡시키는 저런 내용이 전 성별, 전 세계에서 볼 수 있는 플랫폼에 버젓이 올라갈 수 있다는 것이 부끄럽습니다. 우리나라뿐만 아니라 전세계의 웹툰 시장을 선도하는 곳에서 저런 차별을 넘어 멸시와 혐오를 방치하여 성별갈등의 조장을 자처해서는 안 될 것입니다. 저러한 작품이 버젓이 연재되어 한국과 네이버의 이미지를 깎아내리는 일이 없도록 반려하시기 바랍니다.
In certain misogynistic corners of Korean online culture, the term 퐁퐁맨 (pongpongman, "dishwashing man") has emerged. "퐁퐁" refers to a popular dishwashing detergent, and the term metaphorically implies "cleaning up" after others. However, its origin is deeply disturbing. The act of "washing dishes" here refers to being the last in a group to sexually assault a woman, dehumanizing her as an object to be "used" by multiple men. Therefore, a "퐁퐁맨" derogatorily refers to a man who marries or enters a relationship with a woman who has had previous sexual partners, likened to a man "cleaning" after others.
The term reflects the severe misogyny present in these online spaces, reducing women to objects whose value is diminished by their past relationships, and vilifying men who reject such a toxic mindset. This kind of language not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also normalizes the dehumanization and objectification of women.
Currently, Naver Webtoon is holding the "<2024 Greatest Contest on Earth>," and there is a work titled "The Otherworldly Pong Pong Man" that has sparked controversy. It is not about social criticism, but rather about distorting perceptions of a specific gender. It is shameful that such content can be openly posted on a platform accessible by all genders worldwide.
As a leader in the global webtoon market, not just in Korea, Naver should not tolerate such discriminatory content, which crosses into contempt and hatred.
Allowing this work to continue could incite further gender conflict, and Naver should not be complicit in that. I urge you to reject such works to avoid tarnishing both Naver’s and Korea’s reputation.
