a lot of, a number of, a deal of
① many나 much처럼 많다는 의미이지만 쓰임은 다르다. 먼저 many나 much 뒤에는 of를 쓰지 않으나 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 a lot, a number, a deal, plenty 등은 of를 쓴다.
There's not a lot of meat left.

② 격식을 갖춘 문장에서는 a lot of나 lots of 보다는 a great deal of, a large number of, much, many를 쓴다. a lot of나 lots of 둘 사이에는 차이가 없다. 이들 뒤에는 셀 수 없는 단수 명사가 오든지 복수명사 혹은 대명사가 온다. 이때 동사는 뒤에 오는 명사에 일치시킨다.
Lots of patience is needed, too.

A lot of time is needed to learn a language.
A lot of my friends want to emigrate.
Lots of us think it's time for the election.
③ plenty of는 '충분히 많은'이라는 어감을 갖고 있으며 격식을 차린 문장에서는 잘 사용되지 않는다.
Don't rush. There's plenty of time.
Plenty of shops take cheques.
④ a large amount of나 a great deal of는 격식을 갖춘 문장에서 사용되며 셀 수 없는 명사 앞에 사용된다.
I've thrown out a large amount of old clothing.
M Lucas has spent a great deal of time in the Far East.
⑤ a large number of는 복수 명사 앞에 사용된다. 복수동사를 쓴다.
A large number of problems still have to be solved.
