It’s Vacation Time! Preparations are being made for a time of rest, Fun and relaxation. Now, I will tell you about a vacation that I will never forget. I was ten years old, and my family consisted of Mom, Dad, my three sisters and me. Mr. Bruce, a friend of my Dad’s was vacationing in Newcane, Vermont with his wife and little boy. Mr. Bruce rented his house out for the summer. He had to return to Long Island because the rented house had plumbing problems. Those were the good old days of cesspools.

Well, I remember Mr. Bruce coming over to our house to tell my father that he should take a vacation and bring us all to Vermont! Dad liked the idea, and so did we. Momma had some hurrying to do to get everything ready, and we were all willing to help so the preparations began, which took a few days to get the clothing laundered and packed. Then we all piled into our car and we were on our way. I remember the car was an open ‘Maxwell Touring’ car with a roof, but no windows and a big trunk attached to the back. When it rained Daddy jumped out and fastened the isinglass ( a kind of plastic) windows all around, which snapped into place. Seventy one ears ago, the roads were not like the are today, and we were taking a long trip. When we got to Poughkeppsi, New York we stayed overnight at my Aunt’s house. I remember the good time we had there, and can almost taste the egg salad sandwiches she gave us to eat on the way to Vermont. I remember the railroad track and the group of huge metal pails with milk sitting there read to be put on the train..

When we arrived at our destination in Newfane, what stands out in my mind was a little village and houses all painted white. A church with a white steeple, and a beautiful mountain as a back-drop to a lovely ‘picture’, except for one man who decided to paint his house bright yellow! At the farm house where we would stay, we unpacked our suitcases. But Dad wasn’t so sure he liked vacationing in a farm house. He went to pull the shade down on the window, and it fell down! He sat on a chair and it broke! The mattress on the bed was not a ‘Beauty Rest’, but rather, a sagging reminder that it was old. I remember him saying to m mom, “did I leave m good home for this?” But, soon he enjoyed the outdoors, and the good farm food.

The family there was so warm and friendly. The had a son, Winchester, who was my age, and we liked each other immediately. I helped him with his chores: cleaning the cow stable, feeding the chickens, gathering eggs, taking the cow to pasture (with their bells ringing), and the big event for the cows, called the “Cow Lick”. Salt was sprinkled on the big rocks for them, and the cows loved it. And, oh yes, a baby calf was born and Winchester named her “Dotty”. He also sent me a Valentine card, which I carried with me until it was no longer a card. Young love was wonderful!!

One morning there was quite a commotion in the yard. My little sister, Edith, four years old, was crying and Billy, who was also four was belligerent. Edith crying, “Billy hit me with an apple”, and Billy yelling, “I did not”. The two mothers got involved and Billy’s mother said, ~ he doesn’t lie”, and when the truth came out, Billy admitted “It wasn’t an apple ~ it was a rock!”

Many memories come to mind, but this unforgettable experience I must tell you. Mom got us up very early one morning to go up on the nearby mountain to watch the sun rise. As we looked over the terrain, Mom explained how God had created the heavens and the earth for us to enjoy, and how He loved us, and then ~ the son came up! I thought I would burst! It’s difficult to explain the feeling of awe that came over me. What a wonderful and happy time that was for all of us.

Here are 5 steps for seeing a problem in increments that can be handled.

For many of us, worry is a viable emotion, a place where we work out solutions to some of the conflicts and problems we all come across.

Perhaps the worst thing about worry is that by the time you realize you're overly concerned, you're also overwhelmed by the sheer bulk of the problem.

Practically speaking, most things are easier to handle in small pieces, and worry is no exception. Often, spending some constructive time to dissect the problem is all that is needed to set oneself on the road to a solution. Here are five steps you might deem helpful the next time you find yourself a traveler in the land of worry.

1. Constructive worry begins by taking the time to look at the problem. It helps here to write the problem on paper in an attempt to get perspective. Remember, even Adam had to name the beasts before he could rule over them, and the same principle applies when trying to put your finger on what is really bothering you.

2. Once you've identified your concerns, make a list of three things you can do towards solving or at least bringing a measure of relief towards each problem. Don't hesitate to list even those things you absolutely don't want to do. Just writing them down can lessen the power they can have over you to exacerbate your worry.

3. Take one problem at a time and implement just one of your solution steps toward solving the problem. For example, I recently had a problem on my tax return. I was so worried that I'd done something to cost us extra money that I was losing sleep. I called the IRS the next day, even though it was such a scary thought I didn't want to face them. Guess what. That phone call saved me hundreds of dollars. Had I just written a letter as I originally intended, I would have spent another month worrying about the resolution to the matter.

4. Sometimes the problem is beyond us. That's when it's time to get advice and help. A wise person seeks council. Don't be afraid to get the help of a friend or professional. Sometimes, just listening to yourself describe your problem can be very enlightening.

5. And yet, in spite of our best efforts, we can't solve everything. Some things must be turned over to a higher power. In some cases, it may be A-okay to let go of our expectations, or just learn to love. Sometimes, all we can do is let go.

Worry is not the enemy. But, our inability to handle worry can wreck our health and peace of mind. By implementing these suggestions, you may be able to better handle the 'solution process.'

Questions

1. Have you ever been so worried that you couldn't sleep well? How did you overcome that worry?

2. Besides 5 steps above, do you have any ideas to solve worries in your daily life?

3. We need to keep balance between spiritual and physical condition in order to live a happy life. What do you

usually do to keep spiritual health condition?

Lack of male teachers spurs debate

Many Korean students go through their school life, especially in elementary school, without ever being taught by a male teacher. Some teachers and parents think this is a problem and want more male teachers in the classroom. The Seoul education office plans to do a study on the effects of the lack of male influence on children.

Seoul's education office has formed a task force to study the effects of the lack of male teachers in the classroom.

The move by the education office comes in response to growing concerns voiced by both parents and teachers who are worried about children *missing out on the male perspective of things. Those who advocate more male teachers in the classroom are particularly worried about boys having no male role models. They think this could lead to boys having difficulty establishing their sexuality.

Women far *outnumber men at Korean schools. According to the office, about 86 percent of elementary school teachers in Korea are women. For junior and high schools, the numbers come out to about 66 percent. Further, the trend for female dominance is only getting more *pronounced.

Reasons cited for men avoiding teaching include low salaries and the belief that teaching is not a masculine job. But also, women applicants have performed much better on the competitive teacher employment test.

The research team will be charged with polling public opinion on the issue and researching the effects that the lack of male influence can have on children. This is the first time that such a study is being conducted in Korea. Initial results are expected early next year.

But suggestions to promote a quota for male teachers have also met with arguments about *gender discrimination and that it may lower the overall quality of teachers.

Female dominance in the educational profession is not unique to Korea. In 2004, the OECD average share of female elementary school teachers was 78.3 percent, compared to 74 percent for Korea. There were 17 countries where women made up more than 80 percent of elementary school teachers, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.

Some of the countries, however, have also lately expressed concerns about the same problem. In the United Kingdom, for example, the Teaching and Development Agency for Schools, which is responsible for teacher recruitment, has been making efforts to hire more male teachers.
