Farming in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region has become a deadly profession as Russian drone pilots target civilians

Farmer Oleksandr Hordienko first found himself in the Russian army’s crosshairs in the spring, when an explosive drone crashed into one of his tractors. Weeks later, the Russians blew up his car. Then, they bombed his home with several more drones, destroying it.
Hordienko was leading a fight against Russia’s latest war tactic in southern Ukraine: using drones to terrorize farmers, destroy their equipment and burn their crops.
The athletic 58-year-old bought tracking equipment and a rifle and started shooting the drones down, bagging more than 80, by his own count. Then the Russians went after him.
“They’re hunting me,” said Hordienko, a farmer all his adult life, in mid-July.
The battle in the skies above Ukraine’s farm fields is part of a broader war that Russia is waging against Ukrainian civilians and the Ukrainian economy. The farmers of the Kherson region have had it particularly bad: Russia occupied their farms and stole their grain in the early months of the war, before Ukrainian forces ejected them from the western bank of the Dnipro River.
