22년 전, 저는 밥 존스께서 일본에 오게 될 대 지진에 대해서 처음으로 말씀하시는 것을 들었습니다. 밥 존스는 그 일이 엄청난 지각변동의 시작이 될 것이라고 말했습니다. 수천 명의 사람들이 밥 존스가 지진과 다른 자연적인 재해에 대해서 경이로울 정도로 정확성을 가지고 예언하는 것을 목격해 왔습니다. 가장 극적인 예언 중에 하나는 지난 샌프란시스코에 있었던 예언이 있었습니다. 밥 존스가 예언하길, 북부 캘리포니아 (편집자주: 북가주, Northen California, 캘리포니아는 미국 서부 해안선의 반을 차지할 정도로 큰 주이며, 북쪽에는 샌프란시스코와 실리콘밸리로 유명한 산호세 등이 있음)에서 지진이 있을 것인데, 정확하게 샌프란시스코 시의 남쪽에서 일어날 것이라고 말했습니다. 지진의 강도는 리히터 7.0이 될 것이며 다리들이 위험해 질 것이며, 무엇보다도 전 세계가 그 지진이 일어나는 모습을 직접 보게 될 것이라고 말했습니다. 밥 존스는 여러 집회들과 교회들을 방문하면서 그 일이 일어나기 전에 수개월 동안 계속해서 그 예언을 나누었습니다. 그 지진은 그해 월드 시리즈 야구경기의 첫 게임이 시작하는 동안 일어났습니다. 그 첫 게임은 샌프란시스코에서 있었고 그 경기는 160개 나라들로 생방송 되었으며 밥 존스가 예언한 대로 그 지진의 장면을 전 세계 사람들이 동시에 보게 되었으며 그의 예언은 정확하게 성취되었습니다.
많은 예언적 사역자들은 그 이후에 올 남부 캘리포니아(편집자주: 남가주, Southern California, LA와 샌디에고 등의 대도시가 있음)에서의 지진은 특별히 그 다음에 오게 될 더 큰일에 대한 경고라는 것에 대해 들었습니다. 우리는 남부 캘리포니아에 있는 많은 교회들과 집회들에 참석해서 이것을 나누었습니다. 그런데, 그 의미를 축소하거나 부정하려는 사람들의 반응에 우리는 너무 놀랄 수밖에 없었습니다. 심지어는 캘리포니아는 어떤 일이든 너끈히 해결할 수 있다는 거만함을 보이기도 했습니다. 그 지진에 대한 예언은 아주 정확하고 구체적이었고 그것이 의미하는 바도 분명했습니다. 그렇지만 대부분의 사람들은 그 예언을 듣고도 변하지 않았으며, 심지어는 그 경고들을 들었던 기독교인들도 마찬가지였습니다. 그 지역의 가장 유명한 기독교 지도자 중에 한 사람이 저에게 그 일을 지연시키기 위해서 어떤 일을 해야 하며 그 지진을 통해 배울 수 있는 교훈이 무엇인가에 대해 물어왔습니다. 제에게 주어진 지혜의 말씀은, 약속 있는 첫 계명은 아버지들과 어머니들을 공경해야 한다는 것이었습니다.
“네 아버지와 어머니를 공경하라. 이것이 약속 있는 첫계명이니 이는 네가 잘 되고 땅에서 장수하리라.”(에베소서 6:2~3)
주님이 제게 보여주신 것은 우리가 이렇게 할 수 있는 방법 중에 하나는 이스라엘 민족이 행했던 것처럼, 우리의 아버지들이 파 놓은 우물에서 물을 마시는 것이었습니다. 즉, 이것의 영적인 의미로는 영적인 아버지들의 가르침을 받아들이는 것이었습니다. 제가 이 말씀을 남부 캘리포니아에 있는 파사데나 시에서 나눌 때, 루 잉글(Lou Engle)이 그 말씀에 감동을 받았고 그래서 책 「부흥의 우물을 파라」을 쓰게 되었습니다. 그 책은 이 메시지를 더 콜(The Call)이라는 집회를 통해 놀라운 방법으로 전파되었습니다.
그것이 효과가 있었을까요? 저는 루 잉글의 노력과 다른 많은 사람들의 노력으로 말미암아 우리가 시간을 더 벌 수 있었다고 생각합니다. 많은 사람들이 다가올 큰일에 대해 여러 가지 계시를 받고, 많은 사람들이 그것을 체험하는 동안 밥 존스는 캘리포니아의 큰 지진은, 그가 영적으로 보았던 일본 대지진이 있기 전까지 오지 않을 거라는 입장에서 변함이 없었습니다. 일본 고베 지역에 큰 지진이 있었을 때도 밥 존스는 그것은 자신이 보았던 일본 대지진이 아니라는 점을 확실히 하였습니다. 일본에서 강도 9.0의 지진과 쓰나미와 원자력 발전소가 녹아내리는 일이 있은 후 주일 날, 밥 존스가 주일 예배 드리러 들어가려 할 때, 바로 그에게 가서 일본 지진에 대해 물어 보았습니다. “목사님, 그것이 무엇을 의미하는지 아십니까?”라고 대답하는 밥 존스의 얼굴에서, 이제껏 그가 그토록 수심어린 표정을 짓는 모습을 본 적이 없을 정도로 심각한 모습이었습니다.
이것이 의미하는 것은 무엇인가? What Does It Mean?
이것은 전 세계적으로 큰 변화의 전환점이 된다는 의미입니다. 그 안에는 세계 경제가 궁극적으로 무너져 내리는 것을 포함하는 것입니다. 일본의 대 지진에 이어 미국 서부 지역에 대 지진이 올 것이라는 것을 의미하기도 합니다.
물론, 언제 그리고 서부 해안에서 어느 지역에 대 지진이 일어날 것인가는 아주 중요한 질문입니다. 밥 존스에게 언제 미국 대지진이 일어날 것인가에 대해 계시의 말씀이 주어지진 않았지만 분명한 것은 일본 대지진이 온 이후라는 것은 분명했습니다. 그런데 그 일본 대지진이 온 것입니다.
미국의 대지진이 당장 일어난다는 의미는 아닐 수 있습니다. 그러나 그 일은 오늘 일어날 수도 있고 몇 년 후에 일어날 수도 있습니다. 우리는 모든 사람들이 그 경고의 메시지를 접하고 이주할 수 있으며 질서 있게 일을 처리할 수 있도록 그 일이 지연되기를 기도하고 있습니다.
그러나 그곳에 있는 모든 사람들이, 심지어는 지진의 진원지(Ground Zero)에 있는 사람들을 포함해서 모든 사람들이 다른 곳으로 이주해야 한다는 의미는 아닙니다. 누군가는 하나님의 사명을 가지고 그곳에 남아 있어서 임박한 재난의 시간동안 쓰임 받을 사람이 있을 수도 있습니다. 이 일이 있기 까지는 우리에게 자문을 구해왔던 모든 사람들에게, 하나님을 떠나라고 말씀하지 않으면 그곳에 남으라고 조언했었지만 이제는 하나님이 그곳에 남으라고 명확한 메시지를 주시지 않는다면 그곳을 떠나야만 한다고 조언하고 있습니다.
이 일이 있기 전까지 저는 리더들이 이런 경제적 파국을 피할 수 있도록 깨달음과 지혜와 용기를 가질 수 있게 기도해 왔습니다. 그러나 지금은 피할 수 없는 경제 파국의 시기에 리더들이 우리를 잘 이끌 수 있는 깨달음과 지혜와 용기를 달라고 기도하고 있습니다.
예언의 성격 The Nature of Prophecy
고린도전서 13장에 나온 것처럼, 우리는 부분적으로 보거나 알 수 있고, 부분적으로 예언합니다. 전체적인 그림을 볼 수 있는 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 전체를 알기 위해서 우리는 부분의 정보들을 합하여야 합니다. 그래서 아모스 3장 7절에 나온 것처럼 “주 여호와께서는 자기의 비밀을 그 종 선지자들에게 보이지 아니하시고는 결코 행하심이 없으시리라.” 그 종 선지자들(prophets)에게라고 말하고 있는 것입니다. 이것은 한명의 선지자(prophet)이 아니라 선지자들(prophets)을 의미합니다. 어떤 한 사람의 선지자나 혹은 하나의 예언적인 운동도 전체적인 계시를 받을 수는 없습니다. 그래서 우리는 서로를 필요로 하는 것입니다.
예언적인 기름부음이 있는 사람들이 다가올 대 지진에 대해서 다른 형태로 본 것으로 알고 있습니다. 제가 알기로는, 이 글을 쓰고 있는 지금 시점에서, 미국에 올 대지진의 시기가 정확히 언제인지에 대해 믿을만한 정보를 가지고 있는 사람은 없습니다. 우리는 이 일에 관련된 예언들을 수집하여 중요하다고 생각되는 부분은 다음 번 특별 공지문에 포함시킬 예정입니다.
잠언서 4장 8절에 나온 “의인의 길은 돋는 햇볕 같아서 점점 빛나서 원만한 광명에 이르거니와” 이 말씀을 알고 있습니다. 우리가 삶에서 필요로 할 때 주님은 더 많은 통찰력을 허락하시는 경향이 있습니다. 저는 지금 우리가 가진 것에 대해서 나누고 있는 것입니다.
경제가 무너져 내리면 어떤 모습일까요 What Will the Economic Meltdown Look Like?
경제가 무너져 내린다는 것은 많은 것을 의미합니다. 그러나 그것은 이 세상의 끝이라거나 자유주의 국가로서의 미국의 종말을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다. 우리는 이 과정을 지나고 더 강력해지고 이전보다 더 나은 모습이 될 수 있습니다. 경제적으로도 더 견고해지고 나아질 수도 있습니다.
그러나 우리는 이전에는 한 번도 겪어보지 못한 가장 위험한 시기에 접어들고 있습니다. 올바른 리더십과 국가적인 올바른 해법은 오직 하나님의 은혜로만 가능합니다. 우리에게 올바른 리더십과 해법이 없다면 우리는 아주 끔찍한 독재 정치(terrible tyranny)로 전락할 수도 있습니다.
이런 경제 파국에서 제가 자신 있게 말할 수 있는 두 가지 측면은 한동안 물물 교환이 현금처럼 사용되면서 달러가 가치를 잃게 되는 것과 어느 시점에 은행들이 문을 닫게 되어 은행의 돈을 인출할 수 없는 경우가 생길 것이라는 점입니다. 분명한 것은 만약 달러화가 그 가치를 잃게 되면 우리는 은행에 가서 돈을 인출 하려고 애쓸 필요도 없는 일이라서 이런 일들이 동시에 생기지는 않을 것 같아 보입니다. 또한 안전 금고 안에 저축해 둔 가치 있는 물건들도 찾을 수 없게 될 것입니다.
죽음으로 이끄는 미혹 A Deadly Delusion
“때가 이르리니 사람이 바른 교훈을 받지 아니하며 귀가 가려워서 자기의 사욕을 좇을 스승을 많이 두고 또 그 귀를 진리에서 돌이켜 허탄한 이야기를 좇으리라.”(디모데후서 4:3~4)
디모데후서 4장 3~4절에서는 우리에게 아주 중요한 경고를 하고 있습니다. 그 때에는 올바른 말씀선포를 인내하지 못하고, 다만 자신들의 귀를 즐겁게 하는 말씀을 원하기 때문에 자신들의 사욕에 맞는 스승들만을 많이 두게 될 것입니다. 그러면서 진리에서 자신의 귀를 막고서 대신 근거 없이 꾸며낸 이야기들에 귀를 가까이 하게 될 것입니다.
미국 기독교인들의 가장 큰 약점 중에 하나는 자신들이 부정적이라고 생각하는 어떤 것에 대해서 듣기를 거부하는 태도를 가졌다는 점입니다. 그들은 위에 언급한 디모데후서 4장에서의 성경적인 예언에 해당하는 삶을 살아왔습니다. 이들 중 많은 사람들은 이미 그들이 가진 미혹으로 인해 끔찍할 만큼의 대가를 지불해 왔습니다. 우리는 어떤 일이 다가올 지라도 소망을 가지고 주님 안에서 흔들림 없는 평안과 기쁨을 가질 수 있습니다. 아주 어려운 시기가 다가오지만, 현명한 자는 준비됨으로 인해 흥하게 될 수 있습니다. 가장 현명한 자들에게 이 시기는 가장 번영할 수 있는 때가 될 것입니다. 현명한 자는 디모데후서에 언급된 것처럼 영혼 구원의 열매를 얻을 수 있을 것입니다.
“그러나 너는 모든 일에 근신하여 고난을 받으며 전도인의 일을 하며 네 직무를 다하라.”(디모데후서 4:5) 또한 이때는 가장 대추수의 시기가 될 것입니다. 우리는 육신적인 부분보다 영적으로 더 많이 헌신되고 준비되어 있어야 합니다. 우리는 단지 우리 자신만을 위해서 사재기를 해서는 안됩니다. 대신에 어떤 일에서든 우리가 어떻게 부르심 받은 대로 빛과 소금이 될 것인가를 생각해야만 합니다.
변화는 올 것입니다. 나라의 강한 기초가 되고 지속적인 경제의 버팀목들이 없어질 것입니다. 그래서 오랜 시간동안 우리를 아주 위험한 절벽의 끝에 서게 할 것입니다. 그동안 우리의 리더들은 어렵지만 필요한 결정을 함으로써 우리를 절벽에서부터 구해낼 힘이나 해결 방법을 가지고 있지 못했습니다. 지진이 일어나기 전에, 거의 20년 가까이 벼랑 끝에 있었던 일본 경제가 더 이상 버티지 못해서 곧 떨어지게 될 것이라는 사실로 인해 두려움이 증가되어 왔었습니다. 이것은 비틀거리는 다른 나라들이 추락하게 할 것입니다. 이런 위기는 일본에서 대지진과 쓰나미와 원자력이 녹아내지는 일이 있기 이전부터도 심각한 상황이었습니다.
성경 말씀에서 명백하게 증거 하는 것처럼, 우리에게 일어나는 모든 일을 피할 수 있는 방법은 기도하면서 회개하는 방법뿐입니다. 한 가지 예로는, 니느웨 성이 요나 선지자가 선포한 것처럼 멸망할 것이라는 예언을 듣고서 어떻게 구원 받을 수 있었는가 하는 것입니다. 수년 동안, 우리는 대각성과 회개가 일어나서 이런 시나리오가 사실로 나타나지 않기를 기도해 왔습니다. 그러나 예언대로 일본에 대지진이 일어난 지금, 우리는 이 일을 더 이상 피할 수 없음을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 그리고 이 일이 일어나지 않도록 교회를 깨우려고 노력했던 전략에서 하나님의 백성들이 그 때를 대비하여 잘 준비하게 하는 전략으로 바꾸었습니다.
우리는 여전히 하나님의 자비와 그 때를 잘 통과할 수 있는 은혜를 구할 수 있습니다. 주님은 항상 심판하시기보다 자비를 베푸시기 원하십니다. 그러나 우리가 심판을 피할 수 없는 때가 왔고 우리는 지금 그 강을 건너야 합니다.
심판은 자비입니다 Judgment Is Mercy
성경 말씀에서 여러 가지 다른 종류의 하나님 심판들(judgments)이 나옵니다. 그중에서 정죄(condemnation)와 패망(destruction)은 딱 한 번씩만 나옵니다. 나머지 심판들은 모두 주님께서 사랑하시는 자들에 대해 베푸시는 견책하심(discipline)의 의미입니다. 만약 우리에게 하나님의 견책하심이 없다면 우리는 더욱더 두려워해야 합니다. 우리나라에 하나님의 견책하심이 임하는 이유는 주님이 이 나라를 사랑하시기 때문입니다. 고린도전서 11장 31절에 나온 것처럼 “우리가 우리를 살폈으면 판단을 받지 아니하려니와” 우리가 우리는 살폈으면 주님이 우리는 심판하실 필요가 없었을 것입니다. 우리가 우리를 살피는 편이 훨씬 더 좋았을 것입니다. 그래서 주님은 우리가 그렇게 할 수 있도록 시간을 많이 주셨던 것입니다. 그러나 그때가 지나서 주님이 우리는 도우셔야 하는 때가 온 것입니다.
올바른 길 The Right Path
제가 이미 인용하며 언급한 것처럼 잠언 4장 18절에 보면 “의인의 길은 돋는 햇볕 같아서 점점 빛나서 원만한 광명에 이르거니와”라고 나와 있습니다. 우리가 만약 올바른 편에 선다면 우리의 삶은 더욱더 밝아지고 밝아질 것입니다. 그렇다고 우리가 연단을 겪지 않는다는 뜻은 아니지만, 우리는 더욱더 선명하게 이해할 수 있어야 하며, 더 큰 빛을 가지고 어디로 발걸음 해야 하는지 알 수 있어야 합니다. 이 성경말씀은 환경에 상관없이 의인의 길에 서있는 사람들에게 이루어 질 것입니다.
만약 이 성경말씀이 우리 삶에서 성취되지 않는다면 우리는 어느 부분에선가 잘못된 것입니다. 주님 안에서 잘못된 길은 결코 바른 길로 이어지지 않습니다. 우리가 잘못된 길로 들어섰다면 우리가 할 일은 어디에서부터 잘못되었는지 그 지점으로 다시 되돌아가서 바른 길로 들어서야 합니다, 이것이 바로 회개입니다.
우리에게 다가올 그 모든 일들 가운데에서도 우리는 두려움에 의해 조종 받는 것이 아니라 믿음으로 살아가야 합니다. 안정되지 못하고 미성숙한 사람들은 이 메시지를 단지 두려움을 주는 경고로만 받아들일 것입니다. 그러나 그것은 아무런 도움이 못됩니다. 어떤 사람들은 자신들의 추측을 믿음이라고 생각하고 있습니다. 자신의 믿음 때문에 그 어떤 불행한 일도 일어나지 않을 거라고 생각하는 것입니다. 우리는 그런 사람들한테서 조종당하거나 영향 받지 않도록 해야 합니다.
미국과 많은 나라들은 성경적으로 바른 교리 즉, 바른 교훈(sound doctrine)에서 멀어져 표류해왔습니다. 또한 바른 경제 정책에서도 멀어져 왔습니다. 완전히 무너져 내리기 전에 잘못된 정책에 대해서 수정하는 것이 훨씬 더 쉽습니다. 그러나 이제 우리는 더 큰 변화 가운데에서 고쳐 나가야 하는 어려움 가운데 있습니다. 그러나 그 일이 완전히 불가능 한 것은 아닙니다. 미국에는 성취해야 할 하나님의 부르심이 아직 남아 있습니다. 하나님은 아직 우리는 포기하지 않으셨습니다. 그러나 우리는 잘못 가고 있던 길을 더 이상 계속 가선 안됩니다.
이제 피할 수 없는 경제적인 어려움의 실타래가 풀리는 일이 당장 일어나진 않을 것입니다. 최근에 우리 리더들은 우리가 처한 진짜 상황이 어떤지를 위장하고 숨기는 일에 능숙했습니다. 아마 좋은 의도로 그렇게 했을 수도 있습니다. 그런 어려운 상황에서 사람들이 어찌 할 줄을 모르고 공포심을 느끼길 원치 않았을 수도 있습니다. 혹은 그들 자신도 그 상황을 잘 이해하지 못했기 때문에 숨겼을 수도 있습니다. 어찌 되었든, 세계 경제에 대한 상황은 일본 정부가 방사능 위험에 대해서 취한 태도와 같은 상황이 되어 버렸습니다. 그들이 실제로 어떤 말을 하면 다른 시람들은 또 다른 문제점을 이야기 하는 상황인 것입니다. 하나의 문제를 해결해 가나 싶으면 다른 더 큰 문제가 불거져 나오고 있습니다. 원자력 발전소에서 방사능은 녹아내리고 점점 더 안 좋은 소식만 들릴 뿐입니다.
다시 말씀드리자면, 목사로서 그리고 영적인 파수꾼으로서 리더들에 대한 저의 기도와 중보의 내용이 바뀌었습니다. 리더들이 변하는 것에서 하나님의 백성들이 이 피할 수 없는 시기를 잘 준비하는 것으로 바뀌게 되었습니다. 그러면 어떻게 준비해야 할까요?
‘위기’라는 이름의 ‘기회’ The Opportunity of Crisis
한 가지 주목할 만한 것은, 중국어로 ‘위기’라는 단어가 ‘기회’라는 단어의 동의어라는 것입니다. 이 일은 우리에게 가장 큰 기회가 될 수 있습니다. 다니엘서 2장에 보면 이 세상 왕국을 상징하는 우상이 무너지기 시작할 때, 우상의 발에서 나온 작은 돌들이 산을 이루게 되고, 그 신상을 친 돌은 하나의 큰 산이 되어 온 세상을 가득 채웠습니다. 그런데 산은 성경에서 주로 정부를 상징합니다. 주님은 하나님의 백성들로 하여금 하나님 나라를 위하여 지난 2천년 동안 기도하게 하셨지만 그 일은 피할 수 없었습니다. 그 일이 일어나고 있고 우리는 그런 가운데 살고 있습니다.
이 세상의 정부들이 무너질 때, 하나님의 정부는 더욱더 드러나게 될 것입니다. 이 세상의 경제가 무너져 내릴 때, 하나님의 경제는 더욱 드러나게 될 것입니다. 하나님의 왕국은 왕이신 주님이 다시 오시기 전까지는 완전히 세워지지 않겠지만, 주님이 그의 백성들에게 남기신 임무는, 하나님의 말씀과 복음을 전파하고 주님의 나라를 전하는 것입니다. 우리는 나쁜 소식이 아닌 좋은 소식, 즉 복음을 전하여야 합니다.
이사야 40장에 보면, 우리는 고속도로처럼 하나님 나라를 위한 길을 예비하는 자들로 부르심 받았습니다. 그 대로는 하나님 나라가 임하는 길입니다. 그 대로는 다른 산들과 언덕들을 무너뜨리고 계곡과 낮은 곳을 높이게 될 것입니다. 이사야 40장 전체는 지금 열방들에서 일어날 일들을 파노라마처럼 보여주고 있습니다.
이스라엘이 바벨론에 포로 되었을 때, 하나님은 예레미야를 통해서 아주 놀라운 조언을 해주셨습니다.
“만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님 내가 예루살렘에서 바벨론으로 사로잡혀 가게 한 모든 포로에게 이같이 이르노라. 너희는 집을 짓고 거기 거하며 전원을 만들고 그 열매를 먹으라. 아내를 취하여 자녀를 생산하며 너희 아들로 아내를 취하며 너희 딸로 남편을 맞아 그들로 자녀를 생산케 하여 너희로 거기서 번성하고 쇠잔하지 않게 하라. 너희는 내가 사로잡혀 가게 한 그 성읍의 평안하기를 힘쓰고 위하여 여호와께 기도하라. 이는 그 성이 평안함으로 너희도 평안할 것임이니라.”(예레미야 29:4~7)
이런 측면에서 보면, 기독교인들은 다른 나라에 포로로 잡혀있는 백성들로서 하나님 나라와 그들의 구속의 때를 기다리는 백성들인 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님이 예레미야 29장을 통해 권고하신 것처럼, 우리가 살고 있는 나라가 어디든지 그 나라가 평안하고 번영하기를 구하는 것은 마땅히 해야 할 일인 것입니다. 그러나 하나님의 백성으로서 우리는 구별된 삶을 살아야 하며, 바벨론의 우상과 부도덕함과 문란함에 영향 받아 타락해서는 안됩니다. 포로로 잡혀있는 자들은 주님의 부르심에 따라 하나님의 법에 따라 살아가야 합니다. 기독교인도 그와 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 국민의 일원으로서 우리의 가정과 집이 있는 나라가 잘되기는 바란다고 해서 하나님 나라의 가르침을 타협해서는 안됩니다.
하나님 나라의 경제 원칙에 따라 살아가는 사람들은 하나님 나라에 뿌리는 두고 있으며, 다른 모든 것들이 흔들린다 할지라도, 그들은 결코 흔들림이 없을 것입니다. 만약 우리가 지금까지 이런 일에 하나님께 순종하지 못하고, 우리의 재산을 하나님 나라의 원칙이 아니라 이 세상의 원칙대로 쌓아왔다고 할지라도 여전히 희망은 있습니다. 우리가 회개하면 용서 받을 수 있습니다. 그리고 올바른 기초를 가질 수 있게 회복될 수 있습니다. 이 말은 우리가 결코 어려움을 당하지 않게 될 거라거나 혹은 잘못된 기초 위에 쌓았던 것들을 잃어버리지 않게 될 거라는 말은 아닙니다. 그러나 우리는 회복되고 올바른 기초위에 세울 수 있습니다. 이 일은 개인적으로나 국가적으로 가능한 일입니다.
경제적으로 무너져 내리는 일이 어떤 모습일까요? 히브리서 12장 25절에서 29절을 보면 잘 나타나 있습니다.
“너희는 삼가 말하신 자를 거역하지 말라. 땅에서 경고하신 자를 거역한 저희가 피하지 못하였거든 하물며 하늘로 좇아 경고하신 자를 배반하는 우리일까 보냐. 그 때에는 그 소리가 땅을 진동하였거니와 이제는 약속하여 가라사대 내가 또 한번 땅만 아니라 하늘도 진동하리라 하셨느니라. 이 또 한 번이라 하심은 진동치 아니하는 것을 영존케 하기 위하여 진동할 것들 곧 만든 것들의 변동될 것을 나타내심이니라. 그러므로 우리가 진동치 못할 나라를 받았은즉 은혜를 받자. 이로 말미암아 경건함과 두려움으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 섬길찌니 우리 하나님은 소멸하는 불이심이니라.”
“내가 또 한 번 땅만 아니라 하늘도 진동하리라 하셨느니라”에 주목하시기 바랍니다. 그리고 “또 한 번이라 하심”이 나타내는 것은, 창조된 흔들리지 않는 것들이 남도록 모든 흔들릴 수 있는 것을 없애 버리시는 것을 말합니다.
다가올 경제의 무너짐은 하나님 나라의 원칙 위에 세워지지 않아 흔들릴 수밖에 없었던 것을 제거하는 과정입니다. 미국의 건국 원칙이나 자유 무역 시스템은 하나님 나라의 원칙들에서 시작된 것이었습니다. 우리는 국가적으로나 개인적으로 모두 하나님 나라의 기본 원칙으로 되돌아가야 합니다.
“의와 공의가 주의 보좌의 기초라. 인자함과 진실함이 주를 앞서 행하나이다.”(시편 89:14)
우리는 시편 말씀에서 주의 보좌의 기초가 의와 공의라는 것을 들었습니다. 의(righteousness)란 주님께서 보시기에 바른 일을 하는 것입니다. 하나님의 공의는 모든 사람에 대해서 공평하고 정당한 대우를 하는 것을 의미합니다. 심판은 그들의 사회적 지위와 상관없이 모든 사람에게 동일한 기준으로 행해져야 하는 것입니다. 이것이 역사적으로 미국 경제를 뒷받침 해오던 것이었습니다. 그러나 우리는 그러한 하나님 나라의 원칙에서 벗어나기 시작했고 그로 인해 우리가 직면한 어려움에 처하게 된 것입니다. 우리는 국가적인 회개가 필요합니다.
모래가 아닌 바위에 세운 집에 대한 주님의 가르침을 통해 우리가 이 시대 꼭 필요한 중요한 메시지를 들을 수 있습니다. 먼저 폭풍이 그 집을 강타했을 때 오직 바위 위에 지은 집만이 건재했습니다. 그런 폭풍이 다가오고 있습니다. 우리가 집을 제대로 지었다면, 폭풍이 몰아쳐도 그 집은 굳게 서 있을 것입니다.
바위 위에 집을 짓기 위해서는 우리는 주님의 말씀을 들어야만 합니다. 그리고 그 말씀에 순종해야 합니다. 또한 우리가 주님의 말씀을 듣고도 순종하지 않았다면 더 심한 심판을 받게 될 것입니다. 제가 크리스천이 된 지 햇수로 40년이 되었습니다. 저는 우리가 살고 있는 시대에 대한 경고의 말씀들을 들었던 것을 기억합니다. 주님은 아주 크고 분명하고 명확한 목소리로 말씀해 오셨습니다. 많은 사람들이 그 음성을 들었습니다. 그러나 많은 사람들이 주님의 음성에 순종하지 않았습니다. 여러 가지 면에서 저는 이렇게 음성을 듣고도 순종하지 않았던 죄를 지어왔습니다. 그리고 저는 그 일로 많은 대가를 치러야 했습니다. 그렇지만 제게 그런 모습이 발견될 때마다 저는 제 자신을 겸손히 하고 회개했습니다. 저의 잘못을 덮으려고 하거나 변명하려 하지 않았습니다. 주님의 은혜는 엄청난 것이었습니다. 저는 수년 동안 노력해 온 모든 것을 잃고 경제적으로 파산하는 일도 겪어야 했습니다. 그리고 2년 후에 저는 그 전보다 더 나은 형편으로 회복되었습니다.
주님의 은혜는 개인적으로나 국가적으로 아직 유효합니다. 우리가 불순종 했다면 우리는 여전히 잃게 되는 어려움을 겪게 되고, 또한 어떤 어려운 시기를 통과하게 될 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 회개하고 우리의 죄에서 돌이켜서 주님께 순종하는 삶을 결단하게 된다면, 우리는 더 나은 상황으로 회복되는 것을 기대할 수 있습니다.
“하나님의 나라는 먹는 것과 마시는 것이 아니요 오직 성령 안에서 의와 평강과 희락이라.”(로마서 14:17)
이처럼 하나님 나라는 먹고 마시는 것에 있는 것이 아니라 의와 평강과 희락입니다. 또한 그 일이 이와 같은 순서로 오게 될 것입니다. 우리가 의를 행할 때 진정한 평강이 임하게 될 것입니다, 그리고 진정한 희락 가운데 들어가게 될 것입니다.
여러분이 진정한 평강을 느낀 것이 언제 입니까? 진정한 희락을 느낀 것이 언제입니까? 이런 일들이 여러분의 미래에 있게 될 것입니다. 지금은 우리의 마음과 생각을 주님께 순종하는 일에 초점 맞출 때입니다. 그리고 주님께 순종하지 못했던 모든 일에 대해 회개함으로 우리의 모든 방식을 바로잡을 때입니다. 우리가 하나님 나라 안에서 살게 된다면 그리고 흔들리지 않는 것 위에 우리의 삶을 지어나간 다면, 어떤 폭풍이 이 세상에 몰아쳐도 우리는 굳건히 서 있을 수 있습니다. 또한 마태복음 6장 33절과 34절에 나온 하나님 나라의 열쇠를 가지고 삶의 문제들을 해결할 수 있게 될 것입니다.
“너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라. 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라. 그러므로 내일 일을 위하여 염려하지 말라. 내일 일은 내일 염려할 것이요 한 날 괴로움은 그날에 족하니라.”(마태복음 6:33~34)
크리스천들 중에서 잘못된 곳에 살거나 일하고 있거나 혹은 잘못된 교회를 나가는 경우는, 그들이 먼저 하나님이 그들에게 원하시는 바를 묻고 순종하기보다, 자신이 원하거나 혹은 다른 사람들이 그들에게 원하는 것에 따라 결정했기 때문입니다. 먼저 그의 나라를 구하라는 의미는 여기저기에서 열을 내며 주님의 인도하심을 구하는 기도를 하고 나서, 바로 돌아서서 자신이 원하는 대로 일을 처리해 버리는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 주님을 찾았을 때까지 우리가 생각했던 것보다 시간이 더 걸리는 경우는 우리가 주님으로부터 너무 멀어졌기 때문일 수 있습니다.

There are demarcation points in history where a turn is made and the world starts down a different path. March 11, 2011 will be remembered as one of those days. The 9.0 earthquake that rocked Japan, moving the entire island an estimated 8 feet, actually shifted the earth on its axis enough to change the length of our days and nights. It may not have been enough to notice, but even a slight change on our axis can have major consequences over time. The same is true with the social and economic consequence this earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown will have on modern civilization.
It was twenty-two years ago that I first heard Bob Jones talk about a major earthquake that would be coming to Japan. He said that it would set off cataclysmic events. Thousands have heard Bob predict quakes and other natural events with astonishing accuracy. One of the most dramatic was the last San Francisco quake. He foresaw that the quake would be centered in Northern California but south of San Francisco. He said that it would be 7.0 on the Richter Scale, that the bridges would be dangerous, and that “the world will witness it.” Bob shared this at conferences and churches for months before it hit that fall. It struck during the first game of the World Series that year, which was being played in San Francisco, and it was being broadcast to 160 nations who witnessed it live, accurately fulfilling all that Bob had predicted, including how the world would see it.
Many prophetic people were shown the next quake that hit Southern California, and they were told that this was a warning of another much greater one to come. We shared this in many churches and conferences in Southern California. When it struck, we were astonished at how even the churches responded, downplaying its message, and some even boasting that Californians could handle anything. We felt that the quake we had clearly predicted, with many details that were accurate, had virtually no impact on the people, even some of the strongest Christians who had heard the warnings.
When one of the most well-known Christian leaders in the area asked me what could be done to delay or lesson this quake, I was given “a word of wisdom” that the only commandment with a promise was to honor our fathers and mothers, and the promise was that “it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth” (see Ephesians 6:3). The Lord showed me that one way we could do this was the way Israel did it, which was to drink from the wells that our fathers have dug. Spiritually, this meant to partake of their teachings. When I preached this in Pasadena, Lou Engle picked it up, wrote a book about it, and has in a most remarkable way carried this message to the nation through The Call.
Has it worked? I think Lou’s work and that of many others have given us the time that we’ve had. While many were still receiving revelation about the coming big one, and many were expecting it, Bob Jones was adamant that it would not come until the major one hit Japan that he had seen. When the major quake hit Kobe, Japan, Bob was sure that was not the one he had seen. When Bob walked into the service last Sunday after the recent 9.0 quake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown, I immediately asked him if this was the one. I’ve never seen such concern in Bob’s face as he answered, “You know what this means.”
What Does It Mean?
It marks a demarcation point after which great change will come to the whole world, including an ultimate meltdown of the economy. It will also be followed by a major quake on the West Coast of the United States.
Of course, when and where on the west coast that this major quake is going to hit are important questions. Bob was not given a timing on this quake but was only told that it would not come before the big one he had been shown in Japan. Now it can come. However, this does not necessarily mean that it is immediate. It could come today, or it could still be years away. We are praying that it still will be delayed so that everyone who will hear the warning, and should move, will be able to do this in an orderly way.
This does not mean that everyone there, even those who may be near ground zero, should move. Some may be called by God to stay and be used during this impending catastrophe. However, until now, we have counseled all who asked if they should leave the West Coast not to do this unless they heard from the Lord to do so. Now we will begin counseling everyone to leave unless they hear from the Lord to stay.
Until now, I have prayed for leaders who would have the understanding, wisdom, and courage to make the changes needed to avoid this economic meltdown. Now I am praying for leaders with the understanding, wisdom, and courage to lead us through what is now inevitable.
The Nature of Prophecy
As we are told in I Corinthians 13, we see in part, know in part, and prophesy in part. No one has the whole picture, so to get the whole picture, we need to put the parts together. This is why in the Scriptures that say such things as in Amos 3:7, “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets,” it is always plural, not just a single prophet. No one prophet, or prophetic movement, has the whole revelation. That is a major reason why we need each other.
We know many prophetically gifted people who have seen different aspects of this major quake coming. I do not know anyone at this writing who has what I consider to be a trustworthy timing on it. We will seek to compile these prophecies and share anything we feel is important in future Special Bulletins. As we are told in Proverbs 4:18, “the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.” It is as we walk and as we need it that the Lord tends to give us more insight. I am just sharing what we do have now.
What Will the Economic Meltdown Look Like?
It can mean many things, but one thing it does not mean is the end of the world, and it does not have to be the end of America as a free Republic. We can emerge from this stronger and better than ever, even economically stronger and better. However, we are entering some of the most dangerous times we have ever had to navigate. Without the right leadership and the right resolve of the nation, which will only come by the grace of God, we can also fall to a terrible tyranny.
Two aspects of this meltdown that I have confidence in is the dollar losing its value with bartering being the currency for a period of time, and that there will be a time when banks are closed and what we have deposited in them will not be available. Obviously, if the dollar has lost its value, we would not even bother to get out what we have deposited in the banks, so it does not seem that these will come at the same time. It could also be that things of value we have deposited in safety deposit boxes will not be reachable.
A Deadly Delusion
In II Timothy 4:3-4, we are given a most sobering warning:
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires;
and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
One of the greatest weaknesses of American Christians is the way that so many have been conditioned against hearing anything they perceive to be negative. They have become the fulfillment of the biblical prophecy above. Many of these have already paid a terrible price for their delusion, and we do have a sure hope that through anything which comes, we can have unshakable peace and joy in the Lord. Even so, very difficult times are coming upon us in which the wise can be prepared and can prevail. These can actually be the most prosperous times for those who are the wisest. The wise win souls, which is why the next verse in II Timothy states: “But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
This is going to be the greatest time of harvest of all time. Our preparation needs to be far more devoted to the spiritual than the natural. We can’t just hoard for ourselves, but we must think about how we can be the salt and light we are called to be in anything that happens.
Change has to come. Many of the basic underpinnings of a strong and lasting economy that our nation was founded upon have been abandoned. This has kept us on the edge of the cliff in a most dangerous place for a long time. There has been no strength or resolve in our leadership to make the difficult but necessary decisions to begin moving us away from the cliff. Before the quake hit, fear had begun rising that the Japanese economy, which had been on the edge for nearly two decades, simply could not hold out much longer and would very soon slide off the cliff. This would cause the others who were tottering to go down too. Again, this crisis was impending even before the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown.
Based on the sure evidence of Scripture, in everything that we see like this, we believe that with prayer and repentance these things can be avoided. One example of this was how Nineveh was spared after Jonah had prophesied their doom. For years, we have been praying that there would be the kind of awakening and repentance that would enable us to avoid this whole scenario. However, we also knew that when the quake hit in Japan, these were no longer going to be avoided. Therefore, our strategy has changed from trying to wake up the church so that it would not have to happen, to trying to get God’s people ready for it. We can still pray for the Lord’s mercy and grace through them. The Lord does prefer mercy over judgment, but there is a time when judgment is inevitable, and we have now crossed that Rubicon.
Judgment Is Mercy
A number of different judgments of God are in Scripture—only one is condemnation and only one is destruction. The rest are discipline from the Lord for those He loves. We should be far more afraid if we go without His discipline. The discipline that is about to come to our nation is because He loves us. We are told in I Corinthians 11:31 that if we would judge ourselves, He would not have to judge us. That would be even better, and He has given us much time to do this, but now He is going to have to help us.
The Right Path
As we have already quoted from Proverbs 4:18, if we are on the right path, our lives should be getting brighter and brighter. This does not mean that we will not have trials, but that we should be able to see them with increasing clarity, and we should be able to see where our feet should go with increasing light. This is true for those who are on the path of the righteous regardless of the circumstances. If this is not what is happening in your life, you have missed a turn somewhere. In the Lord, the wrong road never turns into the right road. If we have missed a turn, the only thing we can do is to return to where we missed the turn and get back on the right road. That is called “repentance.”
Through everything that is coming we must live by faith and not be controlled by fear. Unstable and immature people will receive just about any warning with fear and that cannot be helped. Some believe their presumption is faith, and that because they believe it, nothing bad will happen. We cannot let such people control us either.
America and many other nations have drifted from sound doctrine. This includes sound economic policy in ways that cannot be sustained. It would have been much easier to correct these bad practices before a collapse, and we will now have to do it in the midst of much greater challenges. However, it can still be done. America has a destiny that we have not yet fulfilled. God has not given up on us, but we could go no further in the direction we have been going.
The inevitable economic unraveling may not happen all at once. It may not become manifest immediately that it is happening. In recent times, our leaders have become very good at disguising the true condition we’re in. They may be doing this with good intentions, just not wanting to cause panic to those who could not do anything about the situation anyway, while they find a way out. They may be disguising the truth because they do not understand it themselves. Either way, what is happening in the world economy seems to be a striking parallel to the way the Japanese government has been trying to deal with the nuclear crisis—they’re telling us one thing but the instruments are telling us something else. They seem to get one fire under control and another worse one breaks out—the meltdown continues and we keep finding out that things are really much worse than they’ve been telling us.
Again, as a pastor and as a watchman, my strategy has now changed from praying and seeking to intercede with our leaders to make the necessary changes, to helping God’s people prepare to go through the collapse that is now inevitable. How do we prepare?
The Opportunity of Crisis
It is noteworthy that the same Chinese word for “crisis” is the same word for opportunity. This may truly be the greatest opportunity we have ever had. As we see in Daniel 2, when the statue that represents the kingdoms of this world begins to collapse, then the little rock that struck at the feet of this statue will begin to grow into a mountain, which in Scripture often represents government. Then that rock keeps on growing until it fills the entire earth. The kingdom of God that the Lord has had His people praying for these last two thousand years is also inevitable. It is surely coming, and we can live in it now.
As the governments of this world collapse, God’s government will become more manifest. As the economies of this world collapse, God’s economy will become more manifest. The kingdom will not fully come until the King returns, but a job that He left for His people to do before He returned was to preach the gospel, or good news, of His coming kingdom. We do have good news to share, not bad.
In Isaiah 40, we are called to help prepare the way for His kingdom by building a highway. This highway is the road on which His kingdom will come. This highway will bring the other mountains and hills down, and it will raise up the valleys and low places. The entire chapter gives a good panorama of what is happening in the nations right now.
When Israel was taken into exile into Babylon, the Lord gave a remarkable counsel to His people through Jeremiah:
“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon,
‘Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens, and eat their produce.
‘Take wives and become the fathers of sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there and do not decrease.
‘Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare’” (Jeremiah 29:4-7)
In a sense, Christians, who are citizens of another kingdom, have likewise been in exile waiting for their redemption and the kingdom of God to come. It is the right thing to do to seek the welfare of whatever nation we have been called to live in, and to put down roots there as Israel was counseled above. However, God’s people are also to be a distinct and separate people in many ways and were not to defile themselves with the immorality, perversions, and idolatry of Babylon. Those in exile were to maintain their devotion to the laws that God had given them to make them a distinct people for His purposes. The same is true of Christians. Being a part of our nation and seeking its good, while building our own homes and families, does not mean that we compromise the basic teachings of the kingdom.
Those who have lived by kingdom economic principles have built on a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and they will not be shaken when everything else is. If we have not obeyed the Lord in this, and have foolishly built our estates by the principles of the world instead of the principles of the kingdom, there is still hope. We can repent, be forgiven, and be restored to a right foundation. This does not mean that we will not suffer or will not lose what was built on a wrong foundation, but we still can recover and build on a right foundation. We can do this personally and nationally.
What will the economic meltdown look like? Hebrews 12:25-29 states it quite clearly:
See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less shall we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven.
And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN.”
And this expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Therefore, since we receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;
for our God is a consuming fire.
The coming economic meltdown will be the removal of everything that is not built on the kingdom principles that cannot be shaken. Many of the founding principles of our nation and our free market system were kingdom principles. We must return to those as a nation, and we must return to them personally.
We are told in Psalm 89:14 and other places that “righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” Righteousness is doing what is right in the sight of the Lord. God’s justice requires fair and equitable treatment of all people, judging issues by one standard for all, regardless of their station in life. It was the American devotion to these basic truths that enabled the greatest economic engine in history to be built here. It has been a departure from these basic principles that has caused every major problem we’re now facing as a nation. We must have a national repentance.
In the Lord’s teaching about those who build their houses on the rock rather than on sand, we are told several things that are crucial for the times we’re now in. First, the storms beat against both houses, but only the house built on the rock would stand. The storms are coming, but if we have built well we will stand.
To build on the rock, we must hear the words of the Lord, and then we have to obey them. As we are told in other places, hearing His words and not obeying them is to bring an even more severe judgment. I have been a Christian for forty years now, and from the time I was converted, I remember hearing warnings about the times that we’re now in. The Lord has spoken loudly, clearly, and abundantly. Many heard, but it does not seem that as many have obeyed.
In many ways, I have been guilty of this too, and I have paid the price for it. Even so, in every case where I have seen it, humbled myself and repented, not trying to cover up or make excuses, His grace has been abundant. I went through a bankruptcy and lost virtually everything I had spent years and great effort building, and two years later, I came out in an even better place.
His grace is still available for us personally and nationally. We will suffer loss if we have done this, and we can expect to go through some hard times. However, if we repent, turning away from our sins, resolving to live in obedience to Him, we can expect to emerge in a much better place. As we are assured in Romans 14:17, “the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” It will come in this order too. When we do what is righteous, it will be followed by true peace, which will be followed by true joy.
How long has it been since you’ve known true peace? How about true joy? These are in your future. Now is the time to set our hearts and minds to obey the Lord and to repent of and correct every way that is not in obedience to Him. If we are going to live in His kingdom, building our lives on that which cannot be shaken and can withstand any storm that comes upon this earth, then we must begin by resolving to live by the key to the kingdom, which we are given in
Matthew 6:33-34:
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things will be added to you.
“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Christians who are now living, working, or even going to church in the wrong places are there because they made major decisions based on what they wanted or what others wanted them to do, rather than seeking first what the Lord wanted them to do for the sake of His kingdom. To seek His kingdom first, means much more than firing up a prayer here and there for Him to guide us, and then go and immediately do what we want to do. It requires seeking Him until we find Him. When it takes longer than we think it should take to find Him, it could be because we have drifted so far from Him.
Now is the time to do whatever it takes to get in the will of the Lord. There will be an increasingly high price to pay for those who are not. There will be increasing peace and joy for those who are.
