연말연시를 맞아 크리스마스와 새해 인사를 겸하는 내용의 e-mail을 비격식체와 격식체로 작성해보자. 어느 정도의 격식을 갖추어 쓰느냐는 상대방과의 친근함의 정도(social distance)에 따라 다르다.

<상황> 연말연시를 앞두고 보내는 카드  

잘 지내셨어요, 잭
성탄과 새해를 축하합니다. 즐거운 크리스마스 보내시고 새해 복 많이 받으시기를 저와 베키가 기원하겠습니다. 새해에도 행복하고 건강하며 크게 발전하시기 바랍니다. 행복한 연말연시 되세요.

시작하는 인사말과 끝맺는 인사말이 격식의 갖춤 정도가 비슷해야 하는데 특히 유의한다.

1. 비격식체(informal to neutral tone)
 

Hello Jack,
Happy Holidays!  Becky and I wish you a magical Christmas and a happy New Year. We hope that the New Year finds you happy, healthy and prosperous!  Take care and happy Holidays!

 2. 격식체(more formal tone)

Dear Mr. Smith,
Season's greetings!  Both my wife Becky and I would like to extend our warmest regards at this special time of the year.  We hope that you have a wonderful holiday season, filled with family, friends and love. May the coming year prove to be a happy and prosperous one for you.

[참고] 회사 대 회사로 보낼 경우  
개인의 이름 대신 그 자리에 회사명을 넣는다. 사업적으로 도움을 준 데 대한 감사 인사로는 보통 Thank you very much for your loyalty. 나 Thank you very much for making this year a good one. 과 같은 표현이 쓰인다.
