유혹에 빠지지 않도록 깨어 살피고 계속 기도하십시오.—마태 26:41.
“참으로 영은 간절하지만 육신이 약합니다.” (마태 26:41ㄴ) 예수께서 하신 이 말씀을 보면 그분이 우리의 불완전함을 잘 이해하고 계신다는 점을 알 수 있습니다. 하지만 이 말씀에는 경고의 의미도 담겨 있습니다. 바로 과신하지 말아야 한다는 것입니다. 예수께서 그 말씀을 하시기 불과 몇 시간 전에 제자들은 그분 곁을 결코 떠나지 않겠다고 자신 있게 말했습니다. (마태 26:35) 그들은 분명 옳은 일을 하기를 원했습니다. 하지만 압력을 받게 되면 그러한 결심이 얼마나 쉽게 무너질 수 있는지 알지 못했습니다. 그렇기 때문에 예수께서는 오늘의 성구에 나오는 것과 같이 경고하셨습니다. 안타깝게도 제자들은 깨어 살피지 못했습니다. 예수께서 체포되셨을 때 그들은 예수 곁을 지켰습니까, 아니면 두려움에 사로잡혀 도망쳤습니까? 제자들은 방심했기 때문에 자신들이 결코 하지 않겠다고 말한 바로 그 일을 했습니다. 예수를 저버린 것입니다.
반론: 인간은 갈대와 같다. 여인의 마음만 갈대가 아니다. 남녀 노소를 막론하고 바람이 불면 흔들린다. 그러나 갈대는 부러지지 않는다. 바람이 잠잠하면 제 자리를 찾는다. 인간의 마음도 그와 같다. 일시적으로 흔들리지만 제자리로 돌아온다.
인간의 마음이 조석으로 변하는 것은 왜 그럴까? 인간이기 때문이다. 깨지기 쉬운 흙으로 만들어졌기 때문이다. 진흙은 좋은 점도 많다. 뭉쳐지기도 잘하고 빚어서 토기도 만들고, 만들고 싶은 모형을 만들수 있다.
멋진 청자와 백자를 만들었다고 하여도 떨어뜨리면 쉽게 깨진다. 이런 특성을 진흙이 가지고 있다. 인간의 원재료가 진흙이다. 이사야 45장 9절이다. "질그릇 조각 중 한 조각 같은 자가 자기를 지으신 이와 더불어 다툴진대 화 있을진저 진흙이 토기장이에게 너는 무엇을 만드느냐 또는 네가 만든 것이 그는 손이 없다 말할 수 있겠느냐"
인간의 본성을 설명하는 말이다. 너무나 약하고 깨지기 쉽고 마음의 상처도 쉽게 받는다. 이것이 진흙으로 만들어진 육신이다. 로마서 8장 6절이다. "육신의 생각은 사망이요 영의 생각은 생명과 평안이니라" 인간으로 사는 동안에는 사망의 생각뿐이다.
자기의 육신을 위한 생각만 한다. 육신의 안위와 쾌락과 안전이다. 이러한 생각들은 육신을 약하게 만든다. 안락을 추구하는 생각은 마음을 움츠리게 만들고 생각의 범위를 좁게 만든다. 조그마한 유혹에도 쉽게 넘어가고 중요한 일도 분별하지 못할 때가 있다.
따라서 인간은 이기적인 생각이 우선이며 자아제일주의가 먼저이다. 이런 생각들이 행동을 제어하고 통제한다. 예수의 제자들도 예외는 아니었다. 그들도 육신으로 살았으며 육체를 가진 인간이었다.
베드로마저 예수와 함께 한 사실에 대해서 부정을 하고 세 번이나 그렇게 하였다. 살기위한 몸부림이며 육신의 약함이었다. 하지만 그러한 두려움은 잠깐이었으며 훗 날에는 예수를 살아계신 하나님의 아들이라고 공개적으로 말하였다.
그 결과 유대인과 사마리아인과 이방인에게 최초로 불꽃 모양의 성령이 임하게 하는 일을 하였다. 그리고 예수의 제자로서 최선을 다하였으며 목숨을 바쳤다. 대부분의 인간도 마찬가지이다. 잠시 흔들리지만 다시 자리를 잡는다.
인간의 본성이 올바른 것을 추구하고 악을 미워하기 때문이다. 잠시 악한 일을 할수 있지만 다시 원상회복한다. 그래서 지금도 사회는 건전하고 살만한 세상이다. 물론 그러한 세상이 되기 위해서는 환경도 중요하다.
먹고 사는 걱정을 하지 않는 환경이 중요하다. 자신의 일에 만족해야 한다. 범죄의 원인 중에는 굶주림이 있다. 장발장같은 도둑도 있다. 먹고 살기 힘든데 어떻게 이웃을 생각하는 삶을 살수 있겠는가? 자기 입에 풀칠도 못하는 자에게는 사치이다.
그래서 일시적으로 범죄에 빠질수 있다. 우선은 먹고 살아야 하며 환경도 좋아야 한다. 혼자 잘먹고 잘사는 사회는 건강하지 못한 사회이다. 기업인들은 이익을 사회에 환원해야 한다. 그래야 건강한 사회가 되며 안전한 나라가 된다.
베드로는 예수의 권고를 잘 따른 사람이다. "나를 따르라"고 했을 때 베드로는 즉시 그물을 버리고 예수를 따랐다. 이제 그는 아무런 재산도 없었다. 먹고 사는 것부터 예수를 의지하였다. 그런데 예수가 잡히고 심문받고 어떻게 될지 몰라 숨어서 지켜보고 있었다. 비드로의 앞날이 예수께 달려 있었다.
그는 심신이 약한 상태였으며 불안한 상황이었다. 당연히 심신 미약의 상태에서 예수를 일시적으로 부인할수 밖에 없었다. 사람의 마음은 자주 변한다. 그러나 뿌리깊은 신념은 변하지 않는다. 잘못된 신념도 마찬기지이다.
잘못을 알지 못하고 믿고 있는 신념도 변화하기가 어렵다. 그 결과 증인들은 잘못된 신념에 목을 메고 있다. 거짓말쟁이 중장회가 가르치는 아마겟돈과 신세계에 빠져서 잘못된 신념에 목숨을 걸고 있다. 그 결과 인생은 파멸이며 가족 관계는 끝장이다.
육체의 약함의 결과이다. 육체의 안위를 우선하는 잘못된 종교의 가르침이 자신과 가족을 파괴하였다. 육체를 위한 생각은 사망의 생각이다. 거짓말쟁이 중장회가 인도하는 증인 조직에서 해방되어야 한다.

Wake up and keep praying so you don't fall into temptation—Matthew 26:41.
"True spirit is desperate, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41). These words from Jesus indicate that he understands our imperfections well. But these words also contain a warning: Don't be overconfident. Just hours before Jesus said it, the disciples confidently said that they would never leave him. (Matthew 26:35) They certainly wanted to do the right thing. But they did not know how easily those resolutions could collapse when under pressure. That is why Jesus warned, as shown in today's Holy See. Unfortunately, the disciples did not wake up and watch. When Jesus was arrested, did they stand by him, or did they flee in fear? The disciples did the very thing they said they would never do because they were careless. They abandoned Jesus.
