| 5 COUP DE PIQUE |
The main purpose of the Coup de Pique is to enable the dancer to change feet, although as explained later it tis sometimes used as a figure in its own right, so arranged that no overall foot change occurs.
If a Coup de Pique is commenced using the LF, the following figure will take place with the RF being used on the first beat of a bar. If the Coup de Pique is commenced using the RF, then the following figure will commence with the LF being used on the first beat of a bar.
If a Coup de Pique danced commencing on the RF, is followed immediately by another Coup de Pique commenced on the LF, there is no overall resultant change of feet and the Coup de Pique Couplet becomes a complete figure in its own right.
A similar result is achieved if a Coup de Pique commenced on the LF is followed immediately by a Coup de Pique commenced on the RF.
Another method of introducing the Coup de Pique action without a foot change is to dance steps 1-5 of a Coup de Pique commenced on the RF and to follow this immediately with a Syncopated Chasse. The name usually applide to this combination is The Syncopated Coup de Pique.
There are, therefore, four different types of Coup de Pique.
a) The Coup de Pique changing from LF to RF
b) The Coup de Pique changing from RF to LF
c) The coup de pique Couplet
d) The Syncopated Coup de Pique
